Eight Wes Anderson films you need to see (and his American Express ad)

None of which should mean we write off a filmography that is teeming with beauty and emotion and humour and elan. Here are eight entries in the Wes Anderson CV that are always worth your time.
Rushmore, 1998

After making his debut with Bottle Rocket in 1996, Anderson began to get noticed with Rushmore, a high school movie that saw Brian Cox and Olivia Williams briefly become part of Anderson's rep company alongside Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman. (Cox would be back for The Fantastic Mr Fox). Schwartzman plays student Max Fisher -'one of the worst students we've got,' according to Dr Guggenheim, aka Cox - who becomes obsessed with his teacher Miss Cross, played by Williams. But Murray's character, Max Blume, a self-made millionaire, is also drawn to her.
There are some who prefer Rushmore to anything that came later; it's the film in which Anderson's approach was more direct and less gilded with his own whimsy. The artifice is there - most notably in Fisher's elaborate stage shows based on Serpico and, possibly, Apocalypse Now - but it's reined in. For others, it might not be Wes Anderson enough.
The Royal Tenenbaums, 2001
The Royal Tenenbaums (Image: free) Watching this again in 2025 what hits hardest is seeing Gene Hackman here, still vital and alive bringing all the vinegar and spite required to play the title character, an absent father trying to ingratiate himself with his estranged family. Otherwise, this feels like the moment Anderson comes into focus as a film-maker in the way he creates symmetrical shots, centres his characters in the frame and uses negative space to tell us who his characters are and explains their relationship to the world. The story - like the setting - almost feels like a live-action New Yorker cartoon (Gwyneth Paltrow's Margot could have been drawn by Charles Addams). But in the midst of this arch family drama there is some real feeling. If anything, that emotion feels stronger now than it did when it first came out.
American Express Advert, 2006
Shall we talk commerce for a moment? Directors make adverts. It happens. They've all done it, from Martin Scorsese to Taika Watiti. Even Ken Loach has shot a McDonald's ad in his time. Bills have to be paid.
What's striking about Anderson's ads is how obviously Andersonian they are. The way the camera moves through space in his H&M Christmas ad is not that different from how it moves through his films.
In some ways his advertising work is a chance to pay tribute to his cinematic heroes. His Prada Candy ads with Lea Seydoux speak to the films of Francois Truffaut and the French Nouvelle Vague, whilst his ad for SoftBank seems to offer us Brad Pitt cosplaying Jacques Tati.
This Amex ad owes something to Truffaut's Day For Night, but it also plays with our idea of Anderson himself; the detail-obsessed cineaste getting everything just right on set, all played out in a single-take pan and tracking shot. Looks like he has his own black Amex card, by the way.

Talking of tribute movies … This short, funded by the fashion label Prada, stars Anderon regular Jason Schwarztman as a racing car driver who crashes in the town of the title, which just happens to be where his ancestors came from. The ghost of Italian director Federico Fellini is being conjured up here. It's a one-set short - though a very elaborate set of an Italian town square - that candy-colours post-war Italy. But it is typical Anderson in its energy and delight in the look of things, as captured by director of photography Darius Khondji.
Hotel Chevalier, 2007
Another short. This 13-minute film - you can watch it on YouTube - is a prologue to Anderson's long-form film Darjeeling Limited, but it works on its own and actually works better than the film it is an adjunct to.
There's not much to it, but its brevity is a strength. Jason Schwartzman is staying in the hotel in question when he is visited by an old girlfriend, played by Natalie Portman - looking like a gamine Jean Seberg tribute act with her short hair and Marc Jacobs' designer wardrobe. In short, it's a film about desire and love and the distance between them, all played out to the sound of Peter Sarstedt's Where Do You Go to My Lovely. There is a credit for Louis Vuitton luggage, naturellement.
The Fantastic Mr Fox, 2009

Anderson was made for animation. His love of intricate doll's house sets, precise camera movement and antic detail works well in the hermetic universe required in animated movies. This adaptation of Roald Dahl's children's novel is funny, sharper and more brutal than you might expect. Anderson's default blue-light melancholy is here juiced up by Dahl's misanthropy. The stop-motion animation is distinctive and the voice work - from the likes of George Clooney (perfect casting for the title character), Bill Murray, Meryl Streep, Michael Gambon and Willem Dafoe - is immaculate.
In 2023 Anderson revisited Dahl with four short films based on the author's short stories for Netflix, in what one critic describes as 'dramatised audiobooks', with the characters delivering the narration into the camera.

A high point and maybe an end point. Anderson's mitteleuropean film - inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig - has a snow globe shimmer to it; a film that at first glance seems to be all icing and no cake. Or maybe there's too much cake?
But while the result is an expression of what we might call 'high Andersonian style' - the style that would subsequently take over his films - it also has a weight to it that subsequent films don't. Because amidst its shaggy dog story about an inherited painting and a murderous family in pursuit of it, we see the rise of fascism slowly seeping in at the edge of the frame. What some might see as stylistic excess is, in fact, a political statement. As the New Yorker critic Richard Brody points out, it's a film 'in which high style emerges as a crucial tool in resisting Nazi oppressors.'
Anderson's usual repertory report for duty but it is Ralph Fiennes - in one of his most beautifully orchestrated performances (which is saying something) - who stands out here. Someone who both fits into the artifice and yet compels with his honesty. Possibly Anderson's greatest movie.
Moonrise Kingdom, 2012
But not my favourite. That would be this coming-of-age movie. Set on a New England island in 1965, it's the story of two bits of kids who run away from home. A movie about maps and cats and scouts, it's full of wide-eyed childhood appetite and middle-aged ennui. From one angle - that of Bruce Willis's sad-eyed policeman, perhaps - it may be the saddest story Anderson has ever told.

Snacktime is nigh at the Golden Arches. On June 3, McDonald's announced exactly when the Snack Wrap will return to partipating restaurants nationwide: July 10. And, thankfully, it's not a limited-time offer, either — it's here for good. The Snack Wrap, which has been off menus for almost a decade, features one of the chain's new McCrispy Strips — a chicken strip made with all-white meat — and is topped with shredded lettuce and shredded cheese, wrapped in a flour tortilla. This go-round, the Snack Wrap comes in two flavors: Spicy, which McDonald's says 'brings the heat with a habanero kick' reminiscent of its Spicy McCrispy sandwich; and Ranch, which 'delivers a satisfying burst of cool ranch goodness,' according to the brand, along with hints of garlic and onion. Customers can get the Snack Wrap on its own or as a combo meal, which will come with two wraps, a medium fries and your drink of choice. It's been a long journey for Mickey D's devotees: On Dec. 5, Joe Erlinger, president of McDonald's USA, first revealed that the Snack Wrap was on its way back while discussing the new McValue menu. 'The Snack Wrap will be back in 2025,' Erlinger said at the time, declining to reveal the exact date. 'It has a cult following, I get so many emails into my inbox about this product.' Then, on April 15, the chain teased the official release date: 'snack wraps 0x.14.2025,' it posted on X, without specifying the month. Now, for the official rollout, McDonald's is leaning into the fact that for years, fans have inundated the chain with pleas to reinstate the item after it was kicked off menus in 2016. A petition started in 2021 in its honor garnered over 17,000 signatures, and fans resorted to posting TikToks and making dedicated Instagram accounts devoted to bringing it back. While the chicken-craving masses waited for the Snack Wrap's return, other fast-food chains have dropped their own versions: In March 2023, Wendy's introduced its Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap; in July 2023, Taco Bell reintroduced its Crispy Chicken Taco for a limited time; and in August 2023, Burger King launched BK Royal Crispy Wraps for a limited time, too.

Mammoth task for Jonathan Anderson: What awaits the designer at Dior?

Jonathan Anderson's appointment as artistic director of both menswear and womenswear at Dior may have been long speculated and widely anticipated, but the now-confirmed dual role for the Northern Irish designer is nonetheless historic. With a somewhat understated announcement on Monday, Anderson becomes the first designer to lead all divisions of the storied French fashion house – including womenswear, menswear, and haute couture – since Christian Dior himself. Ten collections a year – and counting With great power, however, comes great responsibility. In Anderson's case, that responsibility will amount to ten collections per year for Dior alone, not including the six annual collections for his eponymous label, J.W. Anderson, or the two he designs in collaboration with Uniqlo. While many assumed Anderson would pause work on his namesake brand to focus on his expansive new role, particularly given the brand's absence from the February fashion calendar, he remains officially involved. According to The Business of Fashion, citing J.W. Anderson's chief executive, Jenny Galimberti, the designer will continue to oversee all six collections for his label. The workload is monumental, even for a designer known for his relentless pace and creative output. Since launching his brand in 2008, later backed by a minority stake from LVMH in 2013, Anderson has rarely slowed. When he wasn't creating for his own label, he was busy transforming Loewe, the Spanish, LVMH-owned fashion house he joined in 2013 at just 29 years old, from a relatively inconsequential brand into one of fashion's most sought-after and talked-about names, with annual revenues estimated at around 2 billion dollars. Even that, however, didn't seem to fully occupy his time toward the end of his tenure, as he also partnered with Italian film director Luca Guadagnino to design costumes for films such as Challengers and, more recently, Queer. All of this still seems a far cry from what Anderson is now set to take on at Dior, a maison with estimated revenues of 9 billion euro in 2023, according to HSBC. Until now, there has been one unspoken rule ever since Dior Men became an established line under Hedi Slimane in the early 2000s: no designer was to take on both womenswear and menswear simultaneously, as the workload was considered simply too immense. Former creative director John Galliano, who led womenswear from 1996 to 2011, cited the overwhelming demands – creating over 30 collections a year across both Dior and his namesake label – as the cause of his breakdown, drug abuse, and eventual scandal-ridden dismissal from Dior. Anderson 'the only option' for Dior Anderson does, without a doubt, appear far more level-headed than Galliano, less eccentric, too. But much like his predecessor, he is 'one of the creative talents of his generation,' as Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, described him when announcing Anderson's appointment to the menswear line back in April. His daughter, Delphine Arnault, Dior's chief executive, used even more exuberant language in a rare interview with Business of Fashion, where she explained her decision to appoint the designer to the dual role. He had been the obvious choice, she said, calling him the most talented designer of his generation. Arnault, who first met him 13 or 14 years ago, also praised his loyalty, something he had already proven during his tenure at Loewe, while acknowledging that a designer as energetic and ambitious as Anderson would inevitably seek a new challenge. That challenge has now arrived. Dior is not only more than four times the size of Loewe in terms of estimated revenue, but also comes with a significantly larger team to oversee – not to mention the fact that Anderson is joining the house at a pivotal moment. Growth has slowed, and expectations are astronomical following what has been one of fashion's most drawn-out succession sagas. The speculation began when Kim Jones, then artistic director of Dior Men, resigned, and rumors swirled that Maria Grazia Chiuri, who led the brand's womenswear for over a decade, was also set to depart. At long last, that question has found its answer, even if it only opens up space for more questions, because what exactly the new Dior will look like remains to be seen. A unified vision to be unveiled at the end of June What is already known, however, is that Anderson's appointment signals more than just a creative shake-up – it represents a strategic shift for Dior. The house is now clearly pursuing a unified creative vision across all divisions, something that has historically been lacking, with distinctly different approaches often dividing menswear and womenswear. 'It's a lot of work,' Arnault acknowledged. 'But we think this will bring a lot of coherence – in the products, in the communications, in the windows.' Anderson's arrival, then, is set to usher in a new era for Dior – not just in aesthetic terms, but structurally as well. While it is safe to assume that his vision will depart significantly from those of his predecessors, it is rooted in deep research. In preparation for his debut, Anderson has reportedly spent time in the Dior archives, examining not only the work of Christian Dior himself but also that of the designers who followed him. Among the many house codes he's revisited, the new designer is said to be especially drawn to iconic pieces such as the Lady Dior handbag – and according to Arnault, he has been granted full creative freedom to reinterpret these elements in his own voice. That Dior would grant him such liberty, especially when it comes to leather goods, comes as little surprise. Anderson has already proven his talent for creating accessories that both captivate and sell, with Loewe's now-iconic Puzzle Bag from 2015 standing as just one notable example. One area where the newly appointed designer, despite his extensive experience, notably lacks expertise is haute couture, a discipline he has never officially tackled. While craftsmanship has long been a cornerstone of his work at Loewe, couture presents a different level of technical and artistic precision. It is, however, the one aspect of his new role that he will have time to ease into, with Dior opting to skip the upcoming couture season. The decision is not without context, after all Maria Grazia Chiuri's final collection for the house, though officially ready-to-wear, featured 20 couture-level gowns, likely occupying the ateliers well beyond the typical production timeline. As a result, the fashion world will first encounter the designer's creative vision for Dior through his menswear debut this June, most likely a strategic move. Launching with menswear not only gives Anderson a cleaner slate, distancing his work from the immediate legacy of Chiuri's womenswear, but also positions his first major statement outside of the crowded womenswear calendar. His debut women's collection is slated for Paris Fashion Week in September, a season already brimming with high-profile transitions at Chanel, Gucci, Balenciaga, Loewe, Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Jil Sander. By the time Anderson unveils his take on Dior womenswear, he will have already planted his flag – a move that may give him both clarity and momentum amid fashion's most competitive season.

Yes, it might be petty, but for too long we've had to watch as fast food fans across the pond enjoyed things that we could only dream of ordering like McGriddles and Frozen Coca-Cola. And even though they still have breakfast bagels and we don't, us Brits can have the last laugh as McDonald's UK has just announced that a brand new menu item is coming – one that's not available in the States yet. Known as The Big Arch, the beast of a burger has been hailed as having 'maximum McDonald's flavour' and is even bigger and wider in size than the iconic Big Mac, featuring not one but two Quarter Pounder beef patties. It's already available in several countries including Canada, France and Portugal and will be joining the menu in the UK from June 18. And what's even more exciting is that once it arrives it'll be here to stay as a permanent menu item. The new menu item has its own exclusive sauce (Picture: McDonald's) What's in the new McDonald's Big Arch burger? The star of the show with this burger is the Big Arch sauce, which features McDonald's ketchup, mustard and pickle juice. There's also some pepper in there and a few other ingredients, though the others are being kept top secret. The signature sauce is squeezed over the top and bottom halves of a new toasted sesame and poppy seed bun, which is then loaded with crispy onions on one side and slivered raw onions on the other, before shredded lettuce and pickles are added too. A slice of white cheddar and a Quarter Pounder patty is placed on each half, with one side being topped with a third and final slice of cheese. This sandwiches nicely between the two beef patties as the box is closed and the two sides of the burger come together to create the Big Arch. Thomas O'Neill, head of menu at McDonald's UK and Ireland claims the new burger is one of the 'biggest things [McDonald's] will launch in a generation'. He said: 'The Big Arch is going to take us into the next level of great beef burgers. 'It's designed to do two things, it's designed to satisfy big McDonald's hunger like nothing else on our menu and it's also designed to taste amazing. 'A new iconic burger needs an equally iconic sauce. The sauce is brand new, it's designed to look and taste and feel like McDonald's. If you close your eyes and try this product, it couldn't be from anybody else but us. 'It's big, bold, and packed with serious deliciousness.' Metro got an early first taste of the new burger at McDonald's HQ (Picture: Courtney Pochin) What does the Big Arch taste like? I headed down to McDonald's HQ in East Finchley for an exclusive first try of the Big Arch and it didn't disappoint. Dare I say it, I actually think it's better than a Big Mac. For me, the flavours are more interesting. As Thomas said, the sauce is so quintessentially McDonald's in flavour. The combination of the slightly sweet ketchup, tangy pickle juice and punchy mustard is comfortingly familiar and yet somehow manages to taste new at the same time. I'm going to need them to bottle and sell this immediately, or at the very least let me order a pot of it to dunk my fries into. The Quarter Pounder patties give the whole thing a very meaty flavour, which is stronger than what you'd get with standard McDonald's burgers, and there's a very satisfying crunch from the crispy onions that elevates the overall eating experience. If I had to give it a rating out of 10, I'd give it a nine. I'm a big fan of it as far as McDonald's burgers go, but it doesn't get full marks as there's one big issue with it… it's incredibly messy. She rated it a 9/10 (Picture: Courtney Pochin) Getting it into the box was a challenge for staff and getting it out was just as difficult for me. Things took a turn for the worse when I tried to actually eat it as there's so much sauce inside, everything slips and slides about on the bun as you take a bite. I fashioned a bib out of napkins, but still ended up with dollops of sauce, bits of lettuce and onions all over me. Eventually, I gave in and asked for a knife and fork. It felt completely and utterly wrong, but it did make a world of difference. Let it be known that this certainly isn't something you'll want to grab at the drive-thru and eat in your car in a hurry. But even if you do end up wearing most of it, you certainly won't go hungry. It's so big, I only managed to finish half of it. For times when you're feeling ravenous and a Big Mac or a Double Cheeseburger just won't cut it, the Big Arch definitely will. Do you have a story to share?
