Having one common drink on holiday could make you sick, expert warns

Daily Mirror10 hours ago
Ahead of the fast-approaching summer holidays, travel experts have warned that a popular beverage loved by Brits could lead to a slew of nasty side-effects including bloating, cramps and nausea
Brits have been warned about one popular beverage that could make them ill when abroad - and it's not tap water. With the summer holidays just around the corner, swathes of UK households will be packing their bags for a week or two in the sun. Despite the cost-of-living crisis continuing to hit cash-strapped Brits hard, research from Tiger.co.uk found that more than half (55 per cent) of us are planning an overseas holiday this year.

If you have children that are still in school, you'll have little choice but to jet off during the summer months - despite travel agents ramping up their prices.

The upside to this is that you're almost guaranteed constant sunshine and scorching temperatures. But, whether you're flocking to the party-mad hotspot of Benidorm - or the tropical delights of Thailand - falling ill can completely ruin your holiday. While most Brits are extra cautious about tap water or ice when abroad, many don't think twice about consuming milk.
In a statement sent to the Mirror, Jessie Chambers from Global Work & Travel warns that unlike the fresh dairy milk that is abundant in the UK, many popular tourist destinations use UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) milk instead. This beverage is made by processing milk at 135C for several seconds, killing bacteria but also altering the milk's structure.
It's designed to give the quickly-expiring product a long shelf life that can survive in hot climates. But adding it to your tea or coffee could lead to some nasty side-effects.

"We get so many travellers saying they felt 'off' after a coffee or hotel breakfast, assuming it was the food," the travel expert said. "But in reality, they've just had a strong dose of UHT milk, which can trigger digestive issues, especially if you've got a sensitive stomach."
While many Brits will be absolutely fine with drinking UHT milk, especially in such small quantities, Global Work & Travel says it could lead to symptoms such as bloating, cramps and nausea if you have IBS or gut sensitivities. Often, this is mistaken for food poisoning.

Jessie therefore advises Brits to ask hotel or restaurant staff whether they have fresh milk, or only use UHT. If you're staying in self-catering accommodation, it's worth looking for labels such as 'UHT' or 'Ultra-Heat Treated' when picking up a bottle of milk from the supermarket.
Even if it is stored in the fridge, you still might be accidentally picking up UHT milk instead of its fresh counterpart. If you're extremely sensitive to lactose or have a dodgy stomach, it could be worth skipping the milk altogether.
The pro also warns against drinking unlabelled or room-temperature milk unless you're sure it's safe and pasteurised. "A strange-tasting brew might not be bad beans – it could just be shelf-stable milk messing with your gut," Jessie added. "Know what you're drinking – especially in hot climates where milk storage works differently to the UK."

Major UK airport's scheme to skip the queues this summer - but there's a catch

Travellers hoping to skip the long queues at security this summer may be in luck. Holidaymakers jetting off from Manchester Airport can pre-book a spot to quickly speed through security. The service, called TimeSlot, can be used by passengers flying from Terminal 2 and 3. It allows tourists to select what time they will be heading through security and 'enjoy a smoother, quicker route'. Travellers can book up to 14 days in advance and will receive a QR code after booking. The code must be presented to a security ambassador at the airport, with a boarding pass. The service is available to use at Terminal 3 from 4am to 6pm. While those departing from Terminal 2 can book between 3.30am to 7.30am, and 11.30am to 3pm from July 22. TimeSlot is priced up to £4.99, with some bookings free. Manchester Airport's website reads: 'Speed through security by pre-booking your slot with TimeSlot, our easy-to-use service available in Terminals 2 and 3. 'Choose a time that fits your travel schedule and enjoy a smoother, quicker route through security. 'With limited slots available, TimeSlot helps to keep you moving through security, giving you more time to relax in the departure lounge or shop at World Duty Free before your flight.' Reservations can be made for up to six people at once. The airport describes the service as 'perfect for those organised travellers who like to stick to a schedule'. When booking, passengers will be suggested 'the best slot options based on your flight details,' according to the website, which is typically two hours before the flight departs. However, the service does not cover check-in, baggage drop or passport control and can only be used at security. It comes after Heathrow announced ambitious new plans to cut waiting times at airport security. The UK's busiest airport has pledged that 95 per cent of passengers will pass through security in under five minutes by 2031. Heathrow is also planning to redesign its terminals to improve the passenger experience by creating 70,000 sqm more space for travellers, reports The Times. Terminals 3 and 5 are also set to get more shops and restaurants while the airport has pledged that 99 per cent of bags will arrive in time due to new technology. The airport said the technology would mean that 1.25 million fewer bags ended up lost.

The 1,500sqm pool can fit up to 1,200 swimmers, so you won't have to worry about finding space. The pool dates back to the 1970s when it was converted from an irrigation reservoir into the public swimming space. There is also a kids pool as showers, lockers and a bar serving snacks and drinks. Free aqua gym classes also run most days at the pool, otherwise outside there is a nearby hotel and restaurants. And due to its secluded nature, it means there aren't many crowds there even in summer either. Previous guests have raved about it, with one saying: "The pool is really big, perfect for swimming and enjoying without feeling cramped." Another said: "One of the best pools I've ever visited, and I'll definitely go back. Lots of shade and quiet. "Perfect for training and entertaining the kids." A third wrote: "I went in the middle of August, and it wasn't crowded at all." A tourist train even runs from Orcera, the nearest city, during the busy season to prevent car park crowding. However, don't try and visit in the winter - the pool is only open from June to August, with the pool emptied after this. For Brits to get there, the nearest major airport is Murcia Airport, where flights from the UK take around 2hr45. The pool is then another 2hr45 by car. Also in Spain is Europe's longest infinity swimming pool. Swimming safety advice Experts have revealed some of their top advice for both adults and kids heading to the water this summer: How to stay safe at the beach Gareth Morrison, Head of Water Safety at the RNLI said: "If you find yourself being swept out to sea in a rip, try to relax and float until you are free from the rip and you can then swim to safety. "If you see someone else in danger, alert a lifeguard or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard." How to stay safe at the swimming pool Tiny Hearts Education, former paramedic and CEO Nikki Jurcutz said: "Always put your little one in bright or contrasting colours that would be easy to find in an emergency. "It only takes 20 seconds to drown, little tips like this could save a life". An Auqabliss spokesperson added: 'Swimming toys such as noodles, dive rings, floaties and beach balls can be dangerous if left in the pool. 'Children may try to grab these from the pool's edge and fall in." How to stay safe at a waterpark Ali Beckman, Puddle Ducks Technical Director, said: "Never send a child down the slide on their own, not only are they going to be entering the slide pool area independently, they then have to exit the pool and wait for an adult. "And wave pools should be avoided until your child is really confident with water going over their faces and you know they are able to regain their feet independently. 'Waterparks are often very busy places and it's easy to lose sight of a child in a split second." In Tenerife is the Gran Melia Palacio de Isora Resort & Spa, which is home to a 400m saltwater infinity pool. Or here is here to find the UK's longest swimming pool.

Resorts across Europe are now employing security to tackle sunbed fights - and they're even removing towels

As holidaymakers jet off on their travels abroad this summer, some hotels are having to find different ways to handle sunbed shortages, and tensions. Gone are the days of waking up early and putting your towel down on a sunbed to secure a good spot by the pool. Now, some hotels are employing security to help keep things under control after several videos have gone viral of people battling it out for sun loungers. Another tourist, @grantsimpson10, posted a video on TikTok of a security guard opening gates to the pool area at Spring Bitacora hotel in Tenerife and dozens of tourists flooding in with their towels at hand. A viewer commented on the clip, revealing they had holidayed there previously and said: 'Stayed there two years ago great hotel but the sun lounger situation was an absolute joke do they still have a security guard?' The poster replied, confirming the establishment had staff 'patrolling' the area still. 'Yeah still got two patrolling it until 8am for opening the gates,' they wrote. Spring Bitacora isn't the only hotel to employ such methods to help tackle the increasingly common sun bed battles. Someone else, @seejonj, posted on TikTok a clip sharing that their hotel in Turkey employed security guards to remove towels from 'unaccompanied' sun loungers before 7am. They captioned the video: 'Sun lounger etiquette, no unaccompanied towels allowed before 7am. 'In all fairness there is plenty and plenty of loungers. always a space and the staff a super friendly and will find you a linger and set it up for you. 'No need to be out at 0630. We've seen the same few people out at 0530!! putting their towels down.' The video, taken at 6.30am, showed dozens of sun beds positioned neatly, most of them with towels already spread across them. The holidaymaker revealed the 'majority of loungers taken with towels'. In a caption over the video, they added: 'The security guard removes them unless you stay with the towels. 'No unaccompanied towels before 7am.' @seejonj Sun lounger etiquette 😩 no unaccompanied towels allowed before 7am. in all fairness there is plenty and plenty of loungers. always a space and the staff a super friendly and will find you a linger and set it up for you. no need to be out at 0630. Chaotic scenes unfolded at Akasha Beach Hotel & Spa, located in Hersonissos, which saw dozens of guests charging towards available loungers as the pool opened for the day. The luxury hotel has become a hit on social media in recent months thanks to its modern and 'clean' aesthetic, providing visually appealing backdrops for photos and videos, which is a key factor for content creators. The hotel's multiple pools, private beach, and spa facilities also offer a range of opportunities for influencers to create engaging content and share unique experiences with their followers.
