Major UK airport's scheme to skip the queues this summer - but there's a catch

Daily Mail5 days ago
Travellers hoping to skip the long queues at security this summer may be in luck.
Holidaymakers jetting off from Manchester Airport can pre-book a spot to quickly speed through security.
The service, called TimeSlot, can be used by passengers flying from Terminal 2 and 3.
It allows tourists to select what time they will be heading through security and 'enjoy a smoother, quicker route'.
Travellers can book up to 14 days in advance and will receive a QR code after booking.
The code must be presented to a security ambassador at the airport, with a boarding pass.
The service is available to use at Terminal 3 from 4am to 6pm.
While those departing from Terminal 2 can book between 3.30am to 7.30am, and 11.30am to 3pm from July 22.
TimeSlot is priced up to £4.99, with some bookings free.
Manchester Airport's website reads: 'Speed through security by pre-booking your slot with TimeSlot, our easy-to-use service available in Terminals 2 and 3.
'Choose a time that fits your travel schedule and enjoy a smoother, quicker route through security.
'With limited slots available, TimeSlot helps to keep you moving through security, giving you more time to relax in the departure lounge or shop at World Duty Free before your flight.'
Reservations can be made for up to six people at once.
The airport describes the service as 'perfect for those organised travellers who like to stick to a schedule'.
When booking, passengers will be suggested 'the best slot options based on your flight details,' according to the website, which is typically two hours before the flight departs.
However, the service does not cover check-in, baggage drop or passport control and can only be used at security.
It comes after Heathrow announced ambitious new plans to cut waiting times at airport security.
The UK's busiest airport has pledged that 95 per cent of passengers will pass through security in under five minutes by 2031.
Heathrow is also planning to redesign its terminals to improve the passenger experience by creating 70,000 sqm more space for travellers, reports The Times.
Terminals 3 and 5 are also set to get more shops and restaurants while the airport has pledged that 99 per cent of bags will arrive in time due to new technology. The airport said the technology would mean that 1.25 million fewer bags ended up lost.

Martin Lewis explains how millions could still get car finance payouts after Supreme Court ruling

Millions of drivers potentially owed compensation over hidden commission payments in car finance schemes could still be able to claim – but they need to 'be patient' for a potential automatic repayment scheme, money expert Martin Lewis said. The founder of Money Saving Expert said motorists with 'secret commission payments' could potentially be reimbursed by an automatic redress scheme by the end of the year. It comes after the Supreme Court ruled that car finance lenders would only be liable for the hidden commission payments in the most 'unfair' cases. 'Nobody should be doing anything right now. You need to sit on your hands. 'People need to be patient. It is the sensible thing to do,' Mr Lewis said. 'While you may have a claim, we are potentially going to see the regulator put in an automatic redress scheme meaning you do not have to put in a claim to get your money. 'So if you were to sign up to a claim's firm on the back of this news, there is a chance you could get money paid to you, and the claim's firm could ask for 25 per cent of it even though it has done nothing.' Mr Lewis said payouts could come by the end of the year, but people should 'wait to see' exactly what the Financial Conduct Authority redress scheme would be. Two lenders, FirstRand Bank and Close Brothers, went to the UK's highest court to challenge a Court of Appeal ruling which found commission payments paid by buyers to car dealers as part of finance arrangements made before 2021 – without the motorist's fully informed consent – were unlawful. The ruling in October last year found three motorists, who all bought their cars before 2021, should receive compensation after they were not told either clearly enough or at all that the car dealers, acting as credit brokers, would receive a commission from the lenders for introducing business to them. Lawyers for the lenders told the Supreme Court at a three-day hearing in April the decision was an 'egregious error', while the Financial Conduct Authority intervened in the case and claimed the ruling 'goes too far'. The three drivers, Marcus Johnson, Andrew Wrench and Amy Hopcraft, opposed the challenge. Giving a summary of the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday, Lord Reed, one of five justices who heard the case, said: 'For the reasons set out in detail in a judgment published today, the Supreme Court allows the appeals brought by the finance companies.' He continued: 'However, we uphold Mr Johnson's claim that the relationship between him and the finance company was unfair, and we allow the appeal in his case only because the Court of Appeal made a number of mistakes in reaching its decision. Retaking the decision on a proper basis, we award him the amount of a commission plus interest.'

Plan for 200 homes on Blaby golf course rejected by council

Plans for 200 homes on a golf course in Leicestershire have been rejected by of Blaby District Council's planning committee refused permission for most of Blaby Golf Centre to be developed when they met to discuss the scheme on were 1,765 objections made against the proposal, the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) Hallam Land Management said the scheme, off Lutterworth Road, would provide much-needed housing in the area. 'Harmful to the area' Council officers had recommended the application be refused with a report saying it would "result in the regrettable loss" of the golf centre and, by extension, create a "significant deficit" in recreational provision in the report also said the loss of green space was "considered to be inherently harmful", and proposals to relocate existing businesses based at the centre, including a dance school, gym, taxi rank, boutique and beauty salon, were not committee chairman Lee Breckon said: "Refusing a planning application is a decision we do not take lightly. "We have a responsibility to ensure a sufficient housing supply and under national guidelines are generally required to approve new schemes."However, in this case we agreed with officers that the scheme would be harmful to the local area rather than beneficial. "Our main concerns were the loss of Green Wedge as well as the loss of premises for several small businesses in the local area. We felt the overall harms posed by the scheme were strong enough for us to reject the application."
