Major UK airport shares update on terminal overhaul - and how it will change the check-in process

A major UK airport has shared an update on the overhaul of its terminal, which will make passengers' journeys even quicker. Bosses at Manchester Airport have spent over £1 billion on extending and refurbishing Terminal 2, which was first opened in 1993. With construction work nearing its end, the airport has officially opened its new Security East screening area. It's fitted with 10 scanners with the latest tech, meaning passengers will no longer need to remove their liquids from their luggage during the screening process. Zone C, located in the departures area, is also now in operation, which will enhance passengers' check-in and bag drop experiences. Taking to social media, the airport's official Facebook account shared an update on ongoing works on the airfield. They explained: 'Airbridges are currently being installed to all Fixed Links and Nodes (FLaNs) on Pier 2. 'The Operational, Readiness, Activation and Transition (ORAT) team completed two trials: one to test dual taxiway November Alpha and another to go-live with stand 47. 'We also completed the final element of our new T2 dual-forecourt operation, meaning that passengers can drop off at the lower forecourt as well as the existing the upper forecourt, outside of T2.' LEGO has signed up to the new-look terminal, as well as other retailers including Pandora, World Duty Free, Rituals and Wetherspoon. Other airlines from Terminals 1 and 3 are expected to relocate to the new T2 once it's fully opened. But, while the improvements have been broadly welcomed by passengers, some have complained about the walking distance in Terminal 2. One flyer said: 'I flew from Terminal 2 a few weeks ago. Looks nice and fancy but so much walking from the departure lounge to the gates in the older terminal part. 'Hopefully will be simpler and quicker when the refurbishment work is completed in T2.'

Reputation of Hong Kong airport grows with facilities

After years with large areas shrouded in construction work, Hong Kong International Airport is just months away from opening a revamped second terminal that will hopefully help lift the city's status as a global aviation hub. Terminal 2 will open in stages from September, starting with the debut of a reconfigured hall that offers 41 parking spaces for cars, tour buses and coaches. The hall will host existing services all under the one roof, and will go into service just before the National Day 'golden week' holiday begins on the mainland. Airport Authority CEO Vivian Cheung Kar-fay said on Monday that some carriers, such as Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express, would be relocated to the second terminal in March next year. Check-in and departure services would be introduced early in the second quarter of next year, before a new concourse and facilities for arrivals were completed in 2027. The work is part of the airport's HK$141.5 billion expansion project that began in 2016, and the launch of a third runway last year was hailed as a 'game-changer' for aviation ambitions. Many cities the size of Hong Kong have had to build more than one airport, therefore it is heartening to see developments here keeping ahead of the expected growth in demand. Airlines are even being urged to put on more flights to take advantage of the increased capacity. Expansion, however, will require hard work. Last year, the airport handled 53.1 million passengers, 34.3 per cent more than in 2023. The level was still only 71 per cent of what it was in 2018 before the pandemic. Greater efficiency is a good start in the task of attracting travellers. Division of labour is planned for the two terminals. The new one will eventually be home to about 10 to 20 airlines and handling point-to-point flights and regional trips. Terminal 1 will serve airlines flying long-haul routes and operating morning flights. The airport already boasts strategic advantages thanks to nearby exhibition and tourism attractions as well as solid links to the mainland. With the new airport envisioned as becoming 'the landmark of Asia', the imminent arrival of more facilities is a welcome sign that the city is ready to soar back to its rightful place as a world-leading aviation centre.

Inside the Puerto Vallarta airport expansion

Meagan Drillinger Puerto Vallarta's international airport is undergoing a major expansion designed to meet rising tourism demand and elevate the destination's global connectivity. The project, which includes the construction of a second terminal, is expected to double capacity and streamline the travel experience for millions of passengers annually. Terminal 2, 40% complete as of March, is on track for completion by the end of the year. Once operational, the new terminal will increase the airport's capacity to more than 8 million passengers per year. The expansion will add more than 957,000 square feet of infrastructure. According to Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico (GAP), which operates the airport, the project represents an investment of $187 million. The terminal will feature updated technology, sustainable design elements and improved services to enhance the passenger experience. Puerto Vallarta has experienced record-breaking traffic in recent years. In 2023 and 2024, Puerto Vallarta welcomed more than 6 million visitors. The growing number of international arrivals, particularly from the United States, Canada and Europe, has created an urgent need to scale up infrastructure and services. The expansion also supports broader efforts to diversify Puerto Vallarta's visitor base in order to make Puerto Vallarta more of a year-round destination. "The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board has focused on recent objectives, including a strategy to diversify its visitor base by attracting younger travelers and seeking business from South America and Europe," said Luis Villasenor, director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust. "This approach aims to offset the seasonal fluctuations in demand for the destination." The upgraded airport facilities will include expanded customs and immigration areas, modernized baggage handling, additional gates and upgraded amenities for both leisure and business travelers. Villasenor highlighted other infrastructure projects that are part of a $9.3 million investment in public infrastructure in the state of Jalisco. The projects include widened sidewalks and bike lanes; a new road node north of the airport equipped to handle 116,000 vehicles a day; and a new fleet of eco-friendly, air-conditioned buses that will launch in the second half of 2025. Another government measure to alleviate the city's traffic congestion is to develop two new docks: one in Mismaloya and the other in El Centro. These docks will connect travelers and cargo to the docks in Los Muertos, Boca de Tomatlan, Quimixto and Yelapa.

Hong Kong airport's Terminal 2 to open in stages from September

Hong Kong airport's new second terminal will open in stages from September, starting with the debut of a coach hall, as part of the city's efforts to up its game as an international aviation hub. Advertisement The Airport Authority said on Monday that the first phase would involve the launch of the terminal's coach hall – a covered area with 41 parking spaces for limousines, tour buses and resident and cross-boundary coaches. The move means all such existing services will be relocated under the same roof. Vivian Cheung Kar-fay, the authority's CEO, said that some carriers, such as Hong Kong Airlines and HK Express, would be relocated to the second terminal in March of next year. The site's terminal concourse and new arrival services are set to launch in 2027, she added. Advertisement 'Terminal 2 will have airlines serving point-to-point destinations, so they are more about regional services,' said Cheung, who was promoted to CEO in April after previously serving in an acting leadership position.

Major UK airport opens new security areas as part of £1.3billion terminal that will ‘rival Europe'

MANCHESTER Airport has opened its new security hall, with half-term travellers being the first to use it. The security hall in Manchester Airport's new Terminal 2 is part of a 10-year, £1.3billion project that is now nearing its completion. 2 The new scanners will eventually mean that travellers will not have to remove liquids from their bags. The airport is currently preparing for a busy week as families flee the country for the May half-term. Over one million passengers are expected to fly into or out of the airport during the school break. The airport's transformation project started back in 2015, with the first milestone being hit back in 2021 when the new extension to Terminal 2 opened. Since, the older part of Terminal 2 has been redeveloped. The new security hall also follows new check-in desks that opened a few weeks ago. The Terminal is expected to be fully open by the end of this year, when a new departure lounge, shops and bars open - in addition to pier 2, which will house extra gates. Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe said: "Seeing the first passengers go into the new security hall is very exciting for everyone here, as it was one of the major milestones we have been working towards since first announcing the transformation 10 years ago "Here at Manchester Airport, we are proud to connect the North to the world and as we take these huge steps towards completing our £1.3bn transformation it means we're connecting those passengers via an airport terminal that can rival any across Europe. "The new security hall is opening just in time for the May half-term break which is one of the busiest weeks of the year for us – I'm looking forward to hearing what our passengers think of it." Belfast Airport £100million upgrade In total, the security hall houses 10 new lanes, five of which are already open. Currently passengers do still need to remove liquids from their back when going through security and this is because different airports are introducing the scanners at different rates. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the old rules of taking liquids out of bags remains in place. Manchester Airport also recently announced a multi-million pound investment in Terminal 3, which will free-up space and improve the passenger experience. The project includes remodelling the entrance to the terminal, the security hall and the departure lounge, which will create extra space for passengers and for new retailers. There will be a new 500 seat bar area with airfield views and an expanded dining area with 200 extra seats too. The new T2 has replaced T1 which will eventually close. Once the renovation work on T2 is complete, which is likely to be this year, T1 will close completely and merge into T3. T3 first opened in 1989 and mainly operates for domestic flights. Another major UK airport, multi-billion-pound expansion was also recently approved. Plus, a tiny UK airport gets new 1-hour flights to stunning British Isle that's warmer than UK with Caribbean-style beaches. 2
