High court notice to OMC on CBI plea for tougher penalty
Hyderabad: Justice K Lakshman of the Telangana high court on Wednesday issued a notice to Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), which was convicted in an illegal mining case, directing it to respond to an appeal filed by the CBI. The CBI has challenged the trial court's order, arguing that the penalty of ₹1 lakh imposed on the company was 'grossly inadequate' and must be enhanced to serve as a deterrent against corporate fraud. On May 6, the principal special judge for CBI cases, Hyderabad, had convicted OMC under sections 120-B and 420 of the IPC and imposed a fine of ₹1,00,000. The court further ruled that if the penalty was not paid, the company's managing director, BV Srinivas Reddy, would undergo one year's simple imprisonment. According to the prosecution, OMC, in collusion with public servants and private players, engaged in deliberate boundary shifting, unauthorised road construction inside forest areas, and large-scale illegal extraction and transport of iron ore. It was also alleged that the company demolished the historic Sugalamma temple within the forest to further its operations. The CBI alleged that over 29.32 lakh metric tonnes of iron ore were illegally dispatched, causing massive revenue losses to the state exchequer. Nandita Saikia murder accused convicted
Guwahati: A lower court in Assam's Dhemaji district convicted Rintu Sarmah on Wednesday in connection with the brutal murder of Nandita Saikia after she rejected his marriage proposal. On Aug 21, 2021, Saikia, a resident of Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district and a BA student of Moridhal College in Dhemaji district, was attacked with a machete by an employee of the college for not accepting the marriage proposal. Later, she succumbed to her injuries at the Brahmaputra Diagnostic Hospital. Sarma, who is a Grade IV employee of Moridhal College in Dhemaji, was later arrested and is currently in judicial custody. Nandita's classmate Kashmira Dutta and her father Deba Dutta were also attacked by the accused. All three of them were rushed to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital first. However, they were shifted to AMCH. Nandita was eventually moved to Brahmaputra Diagnostic Hospital, where she was undergoing treatment before her death.

Guntur court sentences man to life for minor girl's murder
A special court in Guntur on Wednesday sentenced Naramamidi Nagaraju alias Chinni, son of Pothuraju of Kondapalli village in Krishna district, to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1,100 in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a 13-year-old girl from Kottareddypalem village in Chebrolu mandal. The verdict was delivered by Judge R. Sarath Babu, IV Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge for SC/ST Cases, Guntur, under Section 235(2) Cr. P.C. According to the police, Nagaraju, who earlier lived in Kottareddypalem, had developed an illicit relationship with the victim's mother. After the relationship soured, he allegedly lured the girl to his house and strangled her to death on July 15, 2024. The case was registered based on a complaint by the victim's father, under Sections 302 and 363 IPC, read with provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigation, led by B. Janardhan Rao, SDPO Tenali, confirmed the crime with technical and witness evidence. The accused, who evaded arrest for four months, was apprehended on July 15, 2024.
