Yahooa day ago

More than $2.3 million in contraband tobacco has been seized and five GTA men charged following a 16-month-long OPP investigation.
In January 2024, the OPP Contraband Tobacco Enforcement Team (CTET) began a probe into the suspected trafficking of contraband tobacco, including shisha tobacco and contraband cigarettes, by a GTA network.
On July 4, 2024, CTET executed three search warrants in the GTA that led to the seizure of more than 800 kilos of shisha tobacco, more than 16,000 contraband cigarettes, and $30,000 in Canadian currency.
The tobacco seized has an estimated street value of more than $90,000.
On Oct. 24, 2024, 16 search warrants were executed in Brantford, Burlington, Mississauga, Vaughan and Scarborough and about 19,000 kilos of contraband tobacco, valued at $2.3 million, was seized, as well as electronic devices.
Ali Mallah, 58, of Toronto, was arrested in November 2024 and charged with trafficking contraband tobacco.
In April of this year, four more individuals — Omar Omran, 25, of Scarborough, Nael Alwarasaneh, 36, of Burlington, and Abdelrahman Hasan, 28, and Saif Hasan, 20, both of Brantford — were charged with trafficking contraband tobacco.
The accused were released from custody and are to appear June 9 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto.

The shooter reportedly fled on foot. Saturday's news release said the investigation later revealed that the residence, which was occupied, had been mistakenly targeted. No injuries were reported. He was described as a white male 30-40 years of age and standing approximately five feet 10 inches tall with a thin build. They were wearing a dark-coloured medical mask, a dark jacket and dark pants. The release said additional support was provided by Gatineau Police, Sûreté du Quebec, Ottawa Police Service, OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit, OPP Provincial Operations Intelligence Bureau and OPP Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau.

Petawawa shooting investigation leads to 8 arrests, major drug seizure

Eight people are facing charges that include drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit murder as part of an investigation into gunfire earlier this year at a Petawawa, Ont., apartment building. Ontario Provincial Police officers were called to the Wolfe Avenue building on March 22 after getting a report someone had fired a gun in the hallway. In a news release Saturday, OPP said their investigation revealed the shooter had targeted the wrong residence. No one was injured, they added. While that suspect remains on the loose, eight other people were arrested after police executed search warrants in Ontario and Quebec on June 5, OPP said. Major drug seizure The warrants resulted in a major illegal drug haul, with police seizing more than 12 kilograms of fentanyl, more than 15 kilograms of cocaine and roughly 17,000 methamphetamine tablets. Officers also seized quantities of other drugs, OPP said, along with one real and two fake handguns, ammunition, cash and jewelry. The eight people charged range in age from 20 to 63. Most are from either eastern Ontario or western Quebec. Four of the accused have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Police have also laid numerous drug and weapons trafficking charges. Some face as few as two counts, while one of the accused, a 44-year-old man from Gatineau, Que, has been charged with 23 offences. All but one of the eight remained in custody as of Friday, OPP said. As for the initial shooting suspect, police said he may be in the Montreal area but they're still trying to locate him.
