SC: Let govt decide on security cover for Ambanis
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday said it was for the Union and Maharashtra govts to analyse threat perception and decide the nature of security cover for country's top businessman Mukesh Ambani and his family members and warned a petitioner for repeatedly moving the SC for withdrawal/review of their Z+ security.
"Can the Supreme Court decide who should be given what kind of security cover? Whether it is a private citizen, politician or any one for that matter, the govt will examine the threat perception and decide the security cover to be extended to the concerned," said a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan.
Petitioner Bikash Saha was warned by the bench that despite repeated rejection of his pleas on the same issue, he has again moved the SC. "We warn the petitioner against indulging in similar exercise in future. If he does, then the court will consider imposing exemplary cost on him," the bench said. "The petitioner has not produced any material to repudiate the threat perception to the Ambani family. The authorities concerned would continue to provide Z+ security cover as per the Feb 28, 2023, order of the SC," the bench said.

The Ministry of Education has taken a major step towards realising the goals of internationalisation of education as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. In a ceremonial event titled 'Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City' held in Mumbai today, Letters of Intent (LoIs) were issued to five globally reputed universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States of America and Italy. The establishment of the branch campuses of University of York, University of Aberdeen, University of Western Australia, Illinois Institute of Technology and Instituto Europeo Di Design (IED), Italy, reflects a deep and growing trust in India's education ecosystem and is a major milestone as we mark five transformative years of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that NEP 2020 envisions India as a global study destination, offering premium education at an affordable cost. He added that with this initiative, we aim to realise the Prime Minister's vision of positioning India as a global knowledge hub. 'India is encouraging top international universities to establish campuses here, while empowering Indian Higher education institutions to expand globally,' he said. Union Minister Pradhan further added that this initiative reflects a growing two-way movement of ideas, talent and trust. 'India is not just participating in the global education ecosystem; we are shaping it,' he asserted. Pradhan said that Maharashtra's leadership in enterprise and intellect, and with Mumbai Educity emerging as a city where finance and technology meet education and research, Mumbai/Navi Mumbai will bridge Indian aspirations and global excellence. He further said that we are not just inviting foreign universities; we are co-creating ecosystems of innovation, entrepreneurship and research. 'As we mark five years of implementing the NEP 2020, this milestone exemplifies the spirit of Sankalp se Siddhi, the journey from resolution to realisation. It strengthens our shared goal of empowering youth and enabling innovation-led growth through education leading to Viksit Bharat,' the Union Minister said. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the swift issuance of LoIs reflects the speed and commitment of the Government. He thanked the PM for NEP 2020, which has a provision for foreign universities to be a part of the Indian education sector. The five universities, he noted, have added immense value to the State and NEP 2020 has truly opened doors for top global institutions to establish campuses in India. He further stated that talented Indian students who faced accessibility and affordability issues in pursuing foreign education can now do so in India at reduced costs. 'The Government aims to make accessible, global quality education across various domains and further talks are ongoing with 5 more universities,' Fadnavis stated. The LoIs handed over today allow the universities to establish their offshore branch campus in India. All five universities from UK, USA, Australia and Italy, receiving the LoIs are ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Rankings, signifying strong global academic credibility. The University of Western Australia will establish two campuses, one each in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai and Chennai, reflecting the growing confidence of top institutions in India's regulatory and academic landscape. This is the first-time foreign universities will establish a presence in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, with some expected to set up campuses in the upcoming Education City in Navi Mumbai under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. The establishment of these university campuses in India will be beneficial for students, in terms of extending global course curriculum and study opportunities in India and for research, knowledge exchange, enterprise and engagement. Courses at the Mumbai/Navi Mumbai/Chennai campus will be offered at Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels in areas such as business, economics, computer science, public health, data science, design, and more. These are the disciplines that will drive India's development in the years ahead and shape the workforce of a 'Viksit Bharat.' Assam rights org urge Shah to sort NRC issue
1 2 Silchar: The Citizens Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC), an Assam-based social organization, appealed to Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday to intervene in the long-pending NRC issue in the state. The committee urged for immediate legal and administrative measures to address the dire situation of nearly 19 lakh people, who have been excluded from the final NRC list published on August 31, 2019. In a memorandum, submitted to the ministry of home affairs, CRPC secretary general Sadhan Purkayastha and secretary Ali Raja Osmani expressed serious concern over what they termed "prolonged administrative inaction." Furthermore, the CRPC raised alarm over recent incidents, where Indian citizens were allegedly branded as Bangladeshi nationals and "pushed back" across the border. The group termed these acts "unconstitutional" and warned that deporting individuals, with pending cases in high courts or Supreme Court could amount to contempt of court. "Almost six years later, the Registrar General of India is yet to officially notify the final NRC list and the excluded individuals have not received certified copies of their exclusion — a prerequisite for filing appeals," said Purkayastha. The organization also raised the critical issue of Aadhaar cards being denied to over 27 lakh individuals whose biometric data was withheld during the NRC process. "This has left lakhs without access to basic services and entitlements," Purkayastha added. Recent reports indicate that the Assam government has linked Aadhaar applications to NRC status, further complicating matters for those excluded or who did not apply for NRC. In its memorandum, the CRPC put forth several demands, including immediate distribution of national identity cards to those included in NRC, issuance of Aadhaar cards to individuals who submitted biometric data and a fresh, transparent and just process to review and potentially include the 19 lakh excluded names. Harish questions Revanth, Uttam's silence on AP's Godavari project
Hyderabad: Former minister and senior BRS leader T Harish Rao alleged that the Andhra Pradesh govt was conspiring to divert 200 TMC from Godavari waters through the proposed Banakacherla Godavari link project. He accused the Congress govt of remaining silent on the issue despite there being a major threat to the interests of Telangana. He demanded that the Banakacherla project be halted immediately to prevent irreversible damage. Harish Rao, who gave a PPT on the Banakacherla-Godavari scheme at Telangana Bhavan on Saturday, explained how the neighbouring state was swiftly taking up the project. The Centre, under the guise of interlinking rivers, is enabling Andhra Pradesh to divert water even without the completion of Polavaram. "Despite all this, the Telangana govt has shown no urgency, no resistance," Harish said. He said after the injustice faced in Krishna river waters, there is another threat in the form of the Banakacherla project. "While the AP govt is pushing ahead with tenders for this project, Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy and irrigation minister Uttam Kumar Reddy have chosen to remain silent," he alleged. He criticised the Congress govt for focusing more on political vendetta than public welfare. "They are busy filing false cases against KTR and BRS leaders. Sadly, the state's interests are being mortgaged for the sake of political power," he said. Harish Rao said Telangana has eight BJP MPs, eight Congress MPs, and two Union ministers, yet no one is raising their voice. "Is their loyalty to Delhi more important than their responsibility towards Telangana?" he asked. Drawing a contrast, he recalled how Chandrababu Naidu once fought Maharashtra over just 2 TMC from the Babli project. "Now, with 200 TMC on the line, shouldn't the Telangana govt be fighting even harder?" He alleged that Revanth Reddy is compromising state interests to protect his friendship with Chandrababu Naidu. "If the state govt is serious, BRS is ready to support a resolution in the Assembly. But if you fail to act, we will launch a people's movement and pursue legal action," the former minister said. On Uttam Kumar Reddy's letter, Harish said, "Today, I gave a presentation on the Banakacherla project. On the same day, Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy released a letter with yesterday's date. I thank him for responding at least after our presentation," said Harish Rao. He said writing letters is not enough. "If the minister is serious, he should ask the chief minister to demand an apex council meeting on Banakacherla. That is what the people of Telangana are expecting.
