A man who has protested his innocence in relation to the murder of pensioner Josephine 'Josie' Ray was re-arrested today in connection with her killing.
Hasan Ali Gori, who is in his 50s, was arrested by Gardaí in Limerick City.
Mr Ali Gori was taken to a garda station for questioning about the murder of the 89-year old.
Mr Ali Gori has been in a relationship with Ms Ray's daughter, Mary Ray. They were both previously arrested in connection with the death of Josephine Ray. Both have said they had no involvement in the murder.
It's understood that the pensioner was assaulted and strangled. Her body was found in bed at her home at St Joseph's Park, Nenagh, on August 4, 2024.
News in 90 Seconds - Thursday, July 3
It recently emerged that Mr Ali Gori and Mary Ray have been living rough at rat-infested wetlands at Limerick City.
In an interview conducted at their makeshift homeless campsite last April, Mr Ali Gori and Ms Ray said they had no involvement in Josephine Ray's killing.
'I have nothing to do with this death, how is somebody accusing me of murder. I didn't do anything to anybody,' Mr Ali Gori said.
Mary Ray was also adamant she was not involved in her mother's murder: 'No I hadn't, no I hadn't, no, no, I had not, no, no.'
With rats scurrying around her, Ms Ray said: 'My mother loved me, she was mad about me, we lived together. It's very hard for me, I miss her terrible, so much.'
The couple were previously arrested on the day of her funeral, last September.
Mary Ray said she found her mother's lifeless body in bed but she said she initially thought her mother was asleep.
'I got an awful fright. Her glasses were off in the bed…I said, 'Mother, get up for your tea'.
'But she wasn't moving. I said, there's something wrong with her, she must be dead.'
Garda interactions with Josephine Ray at her home in the days before her death have been referred to Fiosru, the Garda Siochana Ombudsman, including a Garda response at her house following a report of a disturbance less than 24-hours prior to her death.
Josephine Ray was reportedly alive when Gardaí called to her home on August 3, during which a number of people were present at her home.
It is understood Gardaí had also been called to her home on several occasions during the months prior to her death in response to a number of different alleged complaints.
A statement released by Gardaí today said: 'A male in his 50s was arrested today in relation to this investigation. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
'Gardaí in Nenagh continue to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman, whose body was discovered at a residence at St Joseph's Park, Nenagh, County Tipperary, on the afternoon of Sunday, August 4, 2024.
'Investigations are ongoing.'

Third man arrested in connection with Ballyfermot house fire

A third man has been arrested connection with setting a Ballyfermot family home on fire on May 21. The male, a juvenile in his teens, is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a garda station in Dublin. This is in addition to the arrests and charges of two men who were involved in the incident yesterday. One man, aged in his 20s, appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice this morning, Friday, July 4, at 10.30am. The second man, a teenager, appeared before the Children's Court at the same time. The verdict is yet to be publicised. The family who lived in the house on Landon Road said it was like "waking up in hell" after the house was firebombed in the early hours of that morning. The Curran family — Pat, Breda and son Luke — were sleeping when a petrol bomb was launched through the front window of their house, setting the living room ablaze and killing the family dog. Gardaí at the time believed it was a case of mistaken identity. Investigations are ongoing. Read More Eight men jailed for 129 years after record €157m cocaine seizure off Cork coast

‘Sightseeing' ex-Ukrainian soldier sparked security alert at US ambassador's residence

A veteran Ukrainian soldier who sparked a security alert at the US ambassador's official residence in Dublin has been spared a jail sentence and has left the country. Oleksandr Kucherenko (33) claimed to be sightseeing on June 13th and that he 'wandered' into the grounds by scaling a moat and an eight-foot walled perimeter of the Deerfields residence in Phoenix Park.4 He pleaded guilty the following day at Dublin District Court to trespassing in a manner likely to place another person in fear. Judge Michele Finan had ordered him to donate money to the Red Cross and adjourned his case, with bail and a daily signing on condition, until Friday. READ MORE Kucherenko, of no fixed address, had claimed he could give €50 to the humanitarian charity. The case resumed on Friday, but the former army man did not appear; however, his solicitor stated that his client had left Ireland. Gardaí confirmed that; however, it was unknown whether he had given the money to charity. Judge Finan imposed a €200 fine, payable within a year, in the defendant's absence. At his earlier hearing, on June 14th, Garda Martin Curley said the accused's reply to the charge was, 'My behaviour would not have scared anyone; I was not drunk'. He had arrived in the country hours before his arrest. A victim impact statement was not required. The court heard the Ukrainian national tripped the perimeter alarm at 3.30pm. Garda Curley said, 'The accused crossed a moat and climbed over the wall to get into the property.' Security personnel detained the former soldier minutes later. Defence barrister Kevin McCrave, instructed by Mr O'Connor, said Mr Kucherenko had been in the Ukrainian army and came to Ireland to visit friends in Claremorris, Co Mayo. He did not address the court but briefed his barrister that he had 'just landed, was sightseeing and taking photographs around the city'. Counsel said the man 'ended up in Phoenix Park and wandered into the grounds inadvertently', and he was apologetic. The court heard his father also served in the military and was killed in action in the war against Russia, which led to the accused being allowed to leave the army. He planned to join other family members in Spain. While on bail pending sentence, the judge had ordered the accused, who was to stay in hostel accommodation, to sign in daily at a garda station, stay away from the ambassador's residence, and have no direct or indirect contact with any of the occupants or through social media. Legal aid was granted.

Eight men sentenced to lengthy jail terms for their part in biggest ever drug seizure in Ireland

EIGHT MEN HAVE been sentenced to a range of prison terms ranging from 13 years to 20 years for their part in Ireland's biggest ever drugs seizure. The men were all arrested after a spectacular Garda, Revenue Customs and Defence Forces operation targeting the MV Matthew bulk carrier cargo ship and the Castlemore trawler off the east and south coasts in September 2023. Army Ranger Wing (ARW) special forces operators fastroped from a helicopter onto the deck of the MV Matthew off Waterford on 26 September 2023. Previously Detective Superintendent Keith Halley, who led the investigation, outlined the facts. He had been the garda liaison with the Joint Task Force and worked closely with Revenue Customs. Advertisement He told the court that an intelligence led operation by gardaí and customs, the ARW along with the naval ship LÉ William Butler Yeats were deployed. They seized the ship which was running for the Atlantic and heading to the African country of Sierra Leone as their plan to smuggle 2.2 tonnes or €157m worth of cocaine fell apart. The MV Matthew was bought by an organised crime group for the sole aim of smuggling the drugs to Ireland. The accused were identified after a lengthy investigation which included the downloading a phones and chat groups they were using to communicate with crime gang handlers in Dubai. The accused from the Matthew are: Iranian Saied Hassani (39), Filipino Harold Estoesta (31), Ukrainian Mykhailo Gavryk (32), Ukrainian Vitali Vlasoi (32), Iranian ship's captain Soheil Jelveh (51) and Dutch Cumali Ozgen (49). The men on the Castlemore were Ukrainian Vitaliy Lapa (62) and UK Jamie Harbron (31).
