Teenager charged with murder of Irish Rail worker

A 19-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 49-year-old Irish Rail worker who was found dead in at his home in Carrick on Suir in Co Tipperary earlier this month. Nathan Hanlon of Castleview, Ballyneale, Carrick on Suir, appeared before a special sitting of Clonmel District Court on Thursday afternoon. Mr Hanlon was charged with the murder of Ian Walsh at his home in Ravenswood Estate on Cregg Road in Carrick on Suir on August 2, 2025. Sergeant Denis Ryan of Clonmel gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said that Mr Hanlon made no reply when the charge was put to him under caution. Defence solicitor John Joy said that he wouldn't be making an application for bail on this occasion as persons facing a murder charge cannot obtain bail at district court level. He asked that Mr Hanlon be psychologically assessed whilst in custody. Mr Joy also made an application for free legal aid. Superintendent Niall O'Connell told Judge Miriam Walsh that Gardaí were seeking a remand in custody to the next sitting of Clonmel District Court on August 26. Mr Joy asked that Mr Hanlon be produced in person in court on the next occasion rather than appearing by video link. Judge Walsh remanded Mr Hanlon in custody to appear before the court in person on August 26. Free legal aid was granted and the accused will be psychologically assessed whilst in custody. Meanwhile, a cremation service took place for Mr Walsh on August 12 last at the Island Crematorium in Ringaskiddy, Co Cork. A post-mortem examination carried out by State Pathologist Dr Yvonne McCartney confirmed that he had died by violent means. Ian Walsh was a native of Waterford who worked at Carrick on Suir train station. He worked for Iarnród Éireann for three decades and was also a qualified bus driver. Temple bar thug kicked English tourist he didn't know in the face

Gardaí are confident they will track down the thug who left an English tourist in a critical condition in an incident in Dublin's Temple Bar. The UK citizen, who was visiting Ireland on holiday, is believed to have gotten into an altercation with an Irish man who he doesn't know near the Centra in Temple Bar Square in the early hours of Thursday morning. Now it has emerged that the attacker brutally kicked the tourist, who is in his 40s, in the face and chest - knocking him to the ground. Sources say the victim then fell backwards and onto the concrete after the attack by a man who was not known to him. The attacker, who did not remain at the scene, is understood to have been identified by investigating officers - after clear CCTV footage was obtained. He remains at large - but investigators are confident of finding him. The victim was rushed to Dublin's Beaumont Hospital, where he is being treated for head injuries - and his condition was being described as critical. The Irish Mirror has since learned that his condition has stabilised following surgery and it is hoped that he will continue to recover. His condition, however, remains critical, sources say, and his recovery will take time. Gardaí are understood to have one suspect for this attack - and have already garnered good-quality CCTV of the incident. In a statement, Gardaí said that officers in Pearse Street are appealing for witnesses in relation to a serious assault that occurred in the Temple Bar Square area of Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, 21 August. "Gardaí and emergency services responded to the incident at approximately 12.30am. A man, aged in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he remains in a critical condition," a Garda spokesperson said. "The scene was preserved and a technical examination has been completed. "Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident or who may have video footage to contact Pearse Street Garda Station on (01) 6669000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.'
