Nature Coffee puts Sabah on the map at China festival

The event gathered over 40 coffee brands from cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu for tastings, sales, and workshops. Nature Coffee, co-founded by Sabah China Chamber of Commerce vice-president Chiew Heng Hock and vice-chairman Dick Lee, used the opportunity to showcase Sabah's unique Catimor variety and foster international collaboration across the coffee supply chain. Visitors were treated to the rich, complex aroma of Sabah-grown beans, with notes of popcorn, genmaicha, and grapefruit, offering both a sensory and cultural exchange experience. SINGAPORE: Goh Cheng Liang, founder of Wuthelam Group and Singapore's richest person, died today at the age of 98, his family said, according to a report published in The Straits Times today. According to Forbes' 2025 ranking of the world's billionaires, Goh topped the list for Singapore with an estimated net worth of US$13 billion (RM55 billion). Advertisement He held a majority stake in Japan's Nippon Paint Holdings, which he helped build into a global coatings powerhouse. Born in 1927, he grew up in a rented shophouse room in River Valley and was sent to Johor during World War II, where he helped sell fishing nets. In 1949, he bought surplus paint from a British army auction and began making his own Pigeon Brand paints using a Chinese dictionary to decipher chemical names. His business boomed during the Korean War when imports were restricted. He later became Nippon Paint's distributor in Singapore and founded Wuthelam Holdings in 1974, building it into a multinational company with nearly 60 per cent of Nippon Paint. Goh's other ventures included developing and later selling the former Liang Court mall and Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Known for avoiding publicity, he told The Business Times in 1997 that he preferred private companies to public ones. Through the Goh Foundation, he funded cancer research, treatment facilities and scholarships, and supported welfare agencies in Singapore as well as roads, schools and sanitation systems in Chaozhou, China. A cancer survivor himself, he also backed the Goh Cheng Liang Proton Therapy Centre at the National Cancer Centre Singapore. Sabah MACC nabs duo over RM3.6 million false claims

Investigations found the claims, made in 2022 and 2023 to the Department of Industrial Development and Research, involved the supply of a retort machine and equipment worth over RM400,000, and certification services including MeSTI, My Food, and Halal certificates worth over RM3.2 million. Advertisement Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrests, saying the case is being investigated under Sections 18 and 28(1)(c) of the MACC Act 2009. Hajiji pledges stability through GRS–Pakatan cooperation as Sabah polls loom
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 12 — Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has reiterated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has agreed to maintain its current formula of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming state election. The GRS chairman said history has shown that a state government needs a strong relationship with the federal government to ensure stability and economic growth. 'We want strong ties with the federal government. We want stability, and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them — to bring prosperity to them,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Paginatan New Township in Ranau. Hajiji said the GRS–PH partnership has been delivering progress for Sabah, with some 94 per cent of more than 400 initiatives under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development plan already implemented. 'This is contrary to the Opposition's claim, which is intended to pull the wool over the people's eyes,' he said. He added that the GRS–PH government had approved numerous assistance programmes for education development and public welfare — initiatives he said had never been undertaken by previous state administrations. 'This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will continue if the people return the mandate to GRS–PH in the coming election,' he said. Hajiji also pointed to the administration's success in securing greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. He said such initiatives are part of the government's broader commitment to eradicating poverty in the state, including through the new township development programme. The long-awaited Paginatan New Township project, he added, is expected to boost the local economy in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, which prioritises the well-being of the people and aims to improve their quality of life. Covering 200 acres and located about 43km from Kota Kinabalu, the new township will be developed in five phases. It will include government offices, shops, low-cost housing, a multi-purpose hall, library, health centre, market, as well as police and fire stations. Once completed, residents of Paginatan will no longer need to travel to Ranau or Telupid to access government services, he said.
