‘Clint: The Man and the Movies': The Odyssey of a Hollywood Icon

‘Clint: The Man and the Movies': The Odyssey of a Hollywood Icon

Epoch Times5 days ago
The Clint Eastwood who emerges from this new biography by film critic and historian Shawn Levy is a complex figure. Eastwood created many great works of screen art, despite an army of critics who frequently belittled his efforts as an actor and director. Indeed, criticism could never stop a career that began in the mid-1950s and was still in motion with last year's release of 'Juror #2.'
There was little early evidence to predict this kind of success. Levy acknowledges the conflicting stories of how Eastwood, who had no childhood dreams of Hollywood, transitioned from an Army stint into Universal Pictures' school for aspiring actors. But while the tall and handsome Eastwood looked good on camera, he needed to overcome wooden line readings and a habit of speaking through his teeth. For a few years, bit parts in B-movies and television episodes barely kept the young actor afloat.

Is 'War of the Worlds' the worst movie of 2025?

It's got an epic title, a big-name star as its lead and a major studio behind it. But since it was released on Amazon's Prime Video on July 25, 'War of the Worlds" has become an all-time ratings bust. The new adaptation of H.G. Wells' book was ranked as one of the worst films of all time by the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. The film stars Ice Cube as Homeland Security surveillance and threat assessment expert Will Radford, who uses government technology to spy on, and later help, his children amid an unfolding alien invasion. Radford is at his desk the entirety of the film, watching events unfold in front of him on a computer screen. Eva Longoria, Michael O'Neill, Olivia DeLaurentis and Clark Gregg also star in the movie, which was directed by Rich Lee. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi movie has a paltry 3% rating on the "Tomatometer," which tracks critic reviews, and 21% on the "Popcornmeter," which tracks audience reviews. Rotten Tomatoes' 'Worst Movies at All Time' list ranks 'War of the Worlds' 88th. The 2002 sci-fi thriller ' Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" is No. 1. The only other title from 2025 to make the list is Sylvester Stallone's 'Alarum.' Just one critic, Jordan Hoffman of Entertainment Weekly, gave "War of the Worlds" a certified fresh ranking, writing, " It's certainly stupid, but it's also a great deal of fun." Most others described the film as the worst take on Wells' 1898 novel about Martians invading Earth. Past adaptations include the Orson Welles-directed CBS Radio broadcast in 1938, a Gene Barry-starring 1953 Technicolor film and Steven Spielberg's 2005 film, which starred Tom Cruise. Lee 'butchers the classic sci-fi parable on humankind's colonialist ills and creates an obnoxiously dull, utterly braindead (arguable bootleg) exercise in capitalist, surveillance state propaganda,' wrote one Rotten Tomatoes critic. Some online noted that they felt like the movie's tagline — which is 'It's worse than you think' — is an appropriate way to summarize their reactions to the film itself. Lee and the cast have not publicly addressed the reaction. Neither Universal Pictures, which produced the film, nor Amazon Studios, which distributed it, responded to requests for comment. (Universal Pictures is a division of NBC News' parent company, NBC Universal.) But as with some other films that receive poor reviews, the reaction to "War of the Worlds" has also made it buzzy. Many viewers have transformed Ice Cube's reactions in various scenes into memes and GIFs. The film has solidified a place on the online database Know Your Meme. The website attributes the rise in online traction to a July 21 post on X from the user 'PoorOldRoloTony,' who shared a clip from the film. The user wrote, 'War of the Worlds (2025) is the worst adaption of the source material to date. It had no ideas beyond the found footage approach.' The post had been viewed 1.9 million times as of Tuesday. Users across TikTok and X have also continued to poke fun at the acting, dialogue, oversimplified device hacking and heavy-handed messaging about mass government surveillance and conspiracy theories. 'Sounds like Ice Cube is reading directly from a script that he had never seen before...,' a TikToker wrote in the text of their video, which featured a clip from the film. The video has been viewed 1.1 million times. One TikToker even impersonated Ice Cube, recording themselves dressed as him and reciting lines from the movie. Some viewers have also criticized the movie's placement of Amazon products, including scenes that feature a Prime Air delivery drone and a character receiving a $1,000 Amazon gift card. Vetz, a YouTube channel that ranks and review movies, cited the product placement as one of the main reasons the film ranks on its 10 worst movies of 2025 list. 'The worst product placement I've ever seen in my life,' said Joel, a reviewer for the channel, which has 261,000 subscribers. On the popular movie tracking platform Letterboxd, the film averaged just 1 star from the roughly 90,000 people who logged having watched it.

Given his track record of taking rising stars including Emma Stone, Sweeney and Powell and turning them into A-listers, the project attracted a ton of talent; Barbaro and Turner were top choices from the start. Barbaro has had a slew of offers to choose from following her first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for her star-making performance as the iconic folk singer and activist Joan Baez in James Mangold's Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. She is in production on Luca Guadagnino's Artificial opposite Yura Borisov and Andrew Garfield for Amazon MGM. Next up, Barbaro will make her stage debut at London's National Theatre in a revival of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liasons Dangereuses opposite Lesley Manville and directed by Tony and Olivier Award winner Marianne Elliott. He also will star in A24's romantic comedy feature film Eternity, directed by David Freyne, opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Miles Teller. The film is set to debut at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival in September before its theatrical release in November. Also upcoming, Turner will appear in the drama thriller film Rosebush Prunning, directed by Karim Aïnouz, starring alongside Jamie Bell, Riley Keough, Elle Fanning and Pamela Anderson. Turner recently completed production on Neuromancer, Apple TV+'s adaptation of William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel. He will star as Case in the 10-episode series from creators Graham Roland and JD Dillard. He also attended the 2025 Sundance Film Festival for the world premiere of Atropia, a war satire film written and directed by Hailey Gates, produced by Guadagnino, also starring Alia Shawkat. The film won the Grand Jury Prize in the festival's U.S. Dramatic Competition. Gluck directed the 2023 box office hit Anyone but You, starring Powell and Sweeney. He also helmed 2011's Friends with Benefits, starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, and 2010's Easy A starring Stone, in addition to launching the Peter Rabbit franchise. Barbaro is represented by UTA, Range Media Partners and Meyer & Downs. Turner is represented by WME and Curtis Brown (UK). Gluck is repped by UTA and Sloane Offer. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: Why it's one of the best comic book movies ever

On August 13, 2010, moviegoers were introduced to director Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and cinema was never the same. Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's acclaimed graphic novel series, this action-packed comedy film follows the titular musician as he tries to become a rock star while battling the seven evil exes of his new girlfriend, Ramona. Though the film bombed at the box office, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World received fantastic reviews, as well as several film awards and nominations. The movie has since achieved a massive cult following, which led to Netflix's 2023 animated series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, with the original cast reprising their roles for the show. Recommended Videos 15 years later, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World remains one of the best comic book movies due to its spectacular ensemble cast, vibrant characters, wacky moments, clever writing, and pitch-perfect music. Edgar Wright's wacky direction Staying true to the film's source material, director Edgar Wright utilized a rich comic book/video game aesthetic to bring Scott Pilgrim's world to the big screen. Featuring animated sound effects, split-screen camera shots, giant monsters, and well-choreographed fight scenes, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World looks like a superhero comic book brought to life. Scott Pilgrim is one huge Easter egg hunt. The movie delivers many pop culture references and homages, particularly to the video games The Legend of Zelda and Sonic the Hedgehog, that add to the film's distinctive style. It even squeezed in a great Seinfeld homage for good measure. This all merges multiple forms of media into one transcendent film straight out of every gamer and comic book nerd's wildest fantasy. This is a perfect fit for Scott's story, as it seems like the audience is seeing the world from his point of view, making for a hilarious, mind-blowing action film unlike any other. Scott Pilgrim is a surprisingly mature story Beneath its video game-inspired narrative and over-the-top fights, Scott Pilgrim is a heartfelt, relatable tale about two flawed people overcoming their toxic nature and growing as human beings as they fall in love. Scott is forced to confront his selfish, inconsiderate actions toward others as he juggles dating two women at once. Ramona goes through a similar arc as she confronts her dark past, which manifests as the evil exes seeking vengeance for her mistreatment of them. You wouldn't normally root for characters like Scott and Ramona. They don't seem like they should be together. However, the film humanizes them as they grow from their mistakes and work toward fixing themselves. They are truly deserving of each other in the end. As the film so explicitly states, the story is less about battling for love and more about fighting for self-respect. The razor-sharp humor Wright crafts all the scenes and events in his films like one long dance. This applies to Scott Pilgrim's clever brand of comedy, with one incredible joke after another. This rapid-fire comedy predominantly consists of Scott's awkward antics, Wallace's witty one-liners, and the evil exes. Scott Pilgrim offers many ridiculous and hilarious gags, including Aubrey Plaza's censored dialogue and Scott's realization about bread. The film also brings plenty of laughs thanks to its several oddball characters, from the Bollywood dancing guy dressed like a pirate to the Will Arnett-esque action star to the dimwitted vegan with psychic powers. With so many wacky, fantastical elements, what makes them even funnier is the way Scott Pilgrim normalizes them all with ridiculous logic. For example, Ramona has the superhuman ability to travel through subspace, but with a deadpan expression, she brushes off something that Canada just doesn't have. What's even wilder is that characters could fight until one of them bursts into a pile of change, and no one would bat an eye. It's a world that could only exist in this movie. An incredible all-star cast Scott Pilgrim features a cast packed with stars, many of whom were still establishing themselves as modern Hollywood's best actors. These include Michael Cera (Superbad), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Star Wars: Ahsoka), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Chris Evans (Captain America franchise), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Mae Whitman (Avatar: The Last Airbender), and Jason Schwartzman (Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse). Each member of this stellar cast brings something special to the table in Scott Pilgrim, bringing such life and variety to the protagonist's comic book world. Though not all of these characters have much screen time in this film, the actors make the most of it to deliver scene-stealing performances that make each of their characters iconic (this includes Young Neil). Outstanding music Music is a huge part of Scott Pilgrim's story, and Wright's film went above and beyond to give audiences killer tracks. On top of some classic tunes from Frank Black, The Bluetones, and The Rolling Stones, Scott Pilgrim's soundtrack featured terrific songs written for the film by Beck and Brian LeBarton. Scott's band, Sex Bob-Omb, delivered some head-banging songs that sound like they're from a real garage rock group. Their first jam session hooks the audience into the movie almost immediately. The cast even performed the music themselves, making the band even more spectacular. In addition, Brie Larson did a fabulous, hypnotic cover of Metric's Black Sheep, making for an unforgettable musical performance. While there have been several comic book movies over the past couple of decades, there is hardly a motion picture quite like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It is probably the only movie that truly looks like a comic book and video game, invoking conventions from different media in an extravagant celebration of pop culture. With such a talented cast and director bringing such vibrant energy and sound to this film, there will hardly ever be a movie like Scott Pilgrim.
