Is 'War of the Worlds' the worst movie of 2025?

NBC News20 hours ago
It's got an epic title, a big-name star as its lead and a major studio behind it.
But since it was released on Amazon's Prime Video on July 25, 'War of the Worlds" has become an all-time ratings bust.
The new adaptation of H.G. Wells' book was ranked as one of the worst films of all time by the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Ice Cube as Homeland Security surveillance and threat assessment expert Will Radford, who uses government technology to spy on, and later help, his children amid an unfolding alien invasion. Radford is at his desk the entirety of the film, watching events unfold in front of him on a computer screen.
Eva Longoria, Michael O'Neill, Olivia DeLaurentis and Clark Gregg also star in the movie, which was directed by Rich Lee.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the sci-fi movie has a paltry 3% rating on the "Tomatometer," which tracks critic reviews, and 21% on the "Popcornmeter," which tracks audience reviews.
Rotten Tomatoes' 'Worst Movies at All Time' list ranks 'War of the Worlds' 88th. The 2002 sci-fi thriller ' Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever" is No. 1. The only other title from 2025 to make the list is Sylvester Stallone's 'Alarum.'
Just one critic, Jordan Hoffman of Entertainment Weekly, gave "War of the Worlds" a certified fresh ranking, writing, " It's certainly stupid, but it's also a great deal of fun."
Most others described the film as the worst take on Wells' 1898 novel about Martians invading Earth. Past adaptations include the Orson Welles-directed CBS Radio broadcast in 1938, a Gene Barry-starring 1953 Technicolor film and Steven Spielberg's 2005 film, which starred Tom Cruise.
Lee 'butchers the classic sci-fi parable on humankind's colonialist ills and creates an obnoxiously dull, utterly braindead (arguable bootleg) exercise in capitalist, surveillance state propaganda,' wrote one Rotten Tomatoes critic.
Some online noted that they felt like the movie's tagline — which is 'It's worse than you think' — is an appropriate way to summarize their reactions to the film itself.
Lee and the cast have not publicly addressed the reaction.
Neither Universal Pictures, which produced the film, nor Amazon Studios, which distributed it, responded to requests for comment. (Universal Pictures is a division of NBC News' parent company, NBC Universal.)
But as with some other films that receive poor reviews, the reaction to "War of the Worlds" has also made it buzzy.
Many viewers have transformed Ice Cube's reactions in various scenes into memes and GIFs.
The film has solidified a place on the online database Know Your Meme.
The website attributes the rise in online traction to a July 21 post on X from the user 'PoorOldRoloTony,' who shared a clip from the film. The user wrote, 'War of the Worlds (2025) is the worst adaption of the source material to date. It had no ideas beyond the found footage approach.' The post had been viewed 1.9 million times as of Tuesday.
Users across TikTok and X have also continued to poke fun at the acting, dialogue, oversimplified device hacking and heavy-handed messaging about mass government surveillance and conspiracy theories.
'Sounds like Ice Cube is reading directly from a script that he had never seen before...,' a TikToker wrote in the text of their video, which featured a clip from the film. The video has been viewed 1.1 million times.
One TikToker even impersonated Ice Cube, recording themselves dressed as him and reciting lines from the movie.
Some viewers have also criticized the movie's placement of Amazon products, including scenes that feature a Prime Air delivery drone and a character receiving a $1,000 Amazon gift card.
Vetz, a YouTube channel that ranks and review movies, cited the product placement as one of the main reasons the film ranks on its 10 worst movies of 2025 list.
'The worst product placement I've ever seen in my life,' said Joel, a reviewer for the channel, which has 261,000 subscribers.
On the popular movie tracking platform Letterboxd, the film averaged just 1 star from the roughly 90,000 people who logged having watched it.

(from left) Max (Lucius Hoyos) and Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) in Nobody 2, directed by Timo Tjahjanto. (Allen Fraser/Universal Pictures) 15nobody Allen Fraser/Universal Pictures Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The creator of that fireball, Christopher Lloyd, reprises his role in 'Nobody 2.' He plays Hutch's dad, David, whom fans of the first film know is even more lethal than his kids. RZA also returns as Hutch's brother, Harry. In fact, the entire cast of ' Hell, even Michael Ironside shows up again as Becca's father, Eddie. You know what they say: Put the star of 'Scanners' in a movie, and somebody's head is bound to explode. Skip the next two paragraphs if you've seen the first 'Nobody.' Advertisement Bob Odenkirk as Hutch Mansell in "Nobody 2." Allen Fraser/Universal Pictures Hutch Mansell is a mild-mannered office worker whose secret past involves being an assassin. It's a family business that his wife knows about, but his children do not. After beating the tar out of a group of thugs connected to the Russian Mafia, Hutch and his family become targets of Yulian, one of the mob's head honchos. Hutch, Harry, and David take out an near-infinite amount of men sent to kill them after Hutch sets every dollar of Yulian's enormous cash supply on fire. After defeating Yulian and his crew, Hutch returns to normal family life—at least until the final scene sets up a potential sequel that will send him back into action. 'Nobody 2' opens the same way 'Nobody' did, with Hutch sitting in an interrogation room. In the first film, he's holding a cute kitty cat as the cops ask 'who the BLEEP are you?' We then flash back to a montage of scenes of Hutch's daily routine of waking up, riding the bus to work, and putting out the garbage. The days of the week appear in big, bold letters as the montage recounts weeks of the same activities. In 'Nobody 2,″ Hutch is now sitting next to some kind of wolf dog as a new set of cops asks the same question. The montage of mundane daily duties now includes killing people, as Hutch has returned to the assassination game to pay off the money he burned in 'Nobody.' My heart sank at the rehashing of the first film's clever introduction. Thankfully, this sequel isn't as lazy as the folks who came up with its title. Kolstad and his co-writer, Aaron Rabin, create a smart plotline for Hutch that mixes ultraviolence with genuine emotion. The screenplay also gives Hutch a new nemesis, Lendina, played by a very game Sharon Stone. Advertisement Sharon Stone as Lendina. Universal Pictures In addition to paying off his debts through increasingly complicated assassinations, Hutch has to deal with his son's anger management problem. Becca points out that there's a good reason Brady resorts to violence as a means to solve conflict: 'like father, like son.' Hutch's 'do as I say and not as I do' approach just isn't working, either. Becca is also sick and tired of her husband not being home due to his constant string of contract hits. Sensing his marriage is in trouble, Hutch demands some time off for a vacation. He takes Becca and the kids to Wild Bill's Majestic Midway and Waterpark in Plummerville, the site of the one vacation David took him and Harry on when they were kids. Unbeknownst to Hutch, Plummerville is a front for Lendina's nasty dealings. These include running drugs and weapons with the aid of a corrupt police force led by Abel (Colin Hanks) and Wyatt (John Ortiz). When Wyatt's baseball player son Max (Lucius Hoyos) bullies Brady, Brady breaks Max's arm, and Wyatt uses the entire police force to try and off Hutch. Suffice it to say, things do not go well for the Plummerville police force — and that's before Hutch runs afoul of lethal Lendina, her dog, and her endless supply of disposable hit men. The waterpark in this movie is a delightful piece of production design. It looks like a decrepit tourist trap that hasn't changed since the 1970s. Lendina herself is also an awesome visual throwback, a ruthless ice blonde who went to the same stylist Brigitte Nielsen's character used in 1987's 'Beverly Hills Cop II.' Advertisement RZA as Harry Mansell. Universal Pictures Director Timo Tjahjanto is no stranger to outrageous violence. (See his 2016 film, 'Headshot.') He knows what the bloodthirsty audience wants, and that Odenkirk and company are just the right people to deliver it in under 90 minutes. Once again, Odenkirk is lots of fun as filmdom's most unexpected purveyor of brute force. And Tjahjanto gives RZA a scene where he brandishes a gigantic sword, which will certainly delight ★★★ NOBODY 2 Directed by Timo Tjahjanto. Written by Derek Kolstad, Aaron Rubin. The Boys actor Antony Starr says goodbye to his iconic Supe Homelander in farewell post: "We created a monster... and I will miss him"

Filming has already wrapped on The Boys season 5 and, now, Antony Starr has found the right time to say goodbye to his iconic Homelander character. In a lengthy post on Instagram, Starr paid tribute to the cast, crew, creator Eric Kripke, and – of course – The Boys' wonderfully twisted fanbase. "This complicated character allowed the space and range to discover and push boundaries in a way I never expected and I will always be grateful for this experience," Starr wrote. "And of course huge gratitude to my co-parent with this twisted gem of a character [Eric Kripke]. We created a monster, sir. And I will miss him, and you. Til we roll out the last season. When I'll see you. But this creative chapter is closed, and I'll miss it, brother." You can read the full post below. Antony Starr's Homelander has been at the centre of some of The Boys' most controversial and shocking moments. Whether it was a unique act of self-love, an obsession with milk, or bumping off some of the Prime Video series' most notable characters, the stars-and-stripes-clad Supe is almost always around to wreak havoc. As of The Boys season 5, the leader of the Seven is firmly embedded in the corridors of Washington as a major figure in the U.S. government. With The Boys either on the run or in captivity, it appears all roads lead to the White House in the final season. Before then, Gen V season 2 is premiering on September 17.
