Death toll from Thai-Cambodian border clashes revised to four after artillery shelling
BANGKOK: Two more civilians were killed after a Cambodian artillery shell landed at a petrol station in Si Sa Ket, bringing the death toll to four in the border clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops on Thursday (July 24).
A shell landed at a petrol station in Si Sa Ket's Kanthalak district, causing an explosion and fire that killed two civilians.
Earlier on Thursday, Sutthiroj Charoenthanasak, chief of Surin's Karb Choeng district, told ThaiPBS that two BM-21 rockets fell on Ban Jorok village in Tambon Dan, severely injuring four.
Two of the injured later died on their way to the hospital. The other two injured were an adult and a 12-year-old boy.
It was also reported that a shell fell outside the fence of Phanom Dong Rak hospital in Surin, but the hospital had already evacuated all personnel and patients. - The Nation/ANN

'I felt worried when Xiao Zhen told me she wanted to go to Thailand. There have been too many bad things happening there this year. But she said it would be safe,' he told reporters. Fighting Red Tape to Bring Daughter Home Both families met with Thai officials and hospital doctors on Saturday (9 August). They asked for medical reports so they could talk to Malaysian doctors about bringing the victims home. 'We just got to Bangkok today. The Thai authorities arranged for us to visit them. We hope to get medical reports so our doctors in Malaysia can check if they can be moved back soon,' the father said. Gan is in the hospital's burn unit with 36% second-degree burns on her face, chest and arm. 'She's awake and stable. She talks by writing. The doctor said she needs about one month to recover,' her father added. When Desperation Turns Deadly The attack happened at 10 pm near Ratchaprasong intersection, a busy tourist area. Police identified the attacker as Warakorn Pabtaisong, 30, from Sa Kaeo province. Witnesses saw Warakorn talking to the couple earlier. Later, when the tourists were sitting on the mall steps, he came back, poured paint thinner on them and set them on fire as they tried to run. People nearby stopped the attacker and held him until the police came. Warakorn admitted to the attack but said he had nothing against the victims-he was stressed because he had no job and was hungry. Thailand Rushes to Contain Fallout The former boxer used to work as a security guard but was recently fired. He told police he hadn't eaten all day. Police found a 1.5-litre bottle of paint thinner and a lighter at the scene. Drug tests on Warakorn were negative. He now faces charges of attempted bodily harm. Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong has ordered stricter security measures in tourist areas and is collaborating with Malaysian officials and hospitals to assist the victims. The ministry is also investigating compensation for the injured tourists and has deployed staff to monitor their treatment. 'Thailand will care for and protect all tourists with full capacity so that Thailand remains a safe destination,' the minister said. Thailand claims three soldiers injured by landmine along border, Cambodia strongly refutes
BANGKOK/PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): The Thai Army said three Thai soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion on Saturday morning during a patrol operation along the Thai-Cambodian border. However, Cambodia strongly refuted the Thai accusations. According to Thailand's Second Army Region, the explosion occurred at around 10:00 a.m. local time, when Thai troops were conducting a patrol and laying barbed wire to reinforce border security in Sisaket Province. Thai army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree said that the incident clearly demonstrated the continued, concealed use of weapons along the border by the Cambodian side, which is a clear violation of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, or the Ottawa Convention. "Such actions pose a major obstacle to implementing ceasefire measures and resolving the conflict through peaceful means and further reinforce evidence that Cambodia has consistently initiated the use of weapons first," Winthai said in a statement. The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) on Saturday evening strongly refuted the Thai accusations that Cambodia laid new mines that exploded and injured three Thai soldiers. "Cambodia's position is unequivocal: We have not, and will not, plant new landmines," the CMAA said in a press release. "At this time, no official and transparent investigation has been carried out regarding the reported incident involving injured Thai soldiers," the press release said. "In the absence of verified facts, it is essential that all parties exercise restraint in public statements. Unsubstantiated accusations not only risk undermining the spirit of cooperation established under the ceasefire but also threaten to erode trust at a moment when constructive engagement is most needed," it added. The press release said Cambodia hopes that the Thai side will respect the points agreed upon at the extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC), especially point two, which states that both sides maintain current troop deployments without further movement, including patrol towards the other side's position. On Aug. 7, Cambodia and Thailand reached a consensus on the details of a ceasefire and signed an agreement at a GBC extraordinary meeting held in Malaysia.
