Fact Check: No, Barack Obama Wasn't on Army Helicopter That Crashed Into American Airline Plane
Former U.S. President Barack Obama was on the military helicopter that crashed into an American Airlines passenger jet in January 2025.

On Jan. 29, 2025, an army helicopter collided with an American Airlines passenger jet near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport near Washington, D.C. The jet, which was flying from Wichita, Kansas, carried 64 people, while the helicopter had three people on board. All were believed dead.
A viral rumor (archived) about the crash claimed that former U.S. President Barack Obama was on the military helicopter. Numerous posts on Facebook (archived) and X said a VIP on the Blackhawk helicopter was none other than the former president.

The above claims are false. Official statements have confirmed the three individuals in the helicopter were soldiers. Furthermore, had Obama indeed been on the flight, it would have made major headline news.
Obama himself issued a statement (archived) on his X account, expressing sadness over the crash, proving that he was not in the helicopter:
Our hearts break for the families who lost loved ones in the tragic plane and helicopter crash at DCA. Michelle and I send our prayers and condolences to everyone who is mourning today, and we're grateful to the first responders who are doing everything they can to help under extremely difficult circumstances.
According to officials briefing the news media on the morning of Jan. 30, they believed no one survived the crash from either the airplane or the helicopter. Washington D.C. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly said operations were shifting from search-and-rescue to recovery efforts.
"At this point, we don't believe there are any survivors from this accident, and we have recovered 27 people from the plane and one from the helicopter," he said.
Pete Hegseth, the newly confirmed U.S. secretary of defense, also issued a statement from his office, "It's a tragedy, a horrible loss of life for those 64 souls on that civilian airliner, and of course the three soldiers in that Black Hawk [helicopter]."
He added that the helicopter was on an "annual proficiency training flight," but the agency would not release the names of the soldiers as their families had not been notified yet.
Other passengers in the American Airlines flight included members of the U.S. Figure Skating world and two Russian former figure skaters.

Gold prices were little changed on Tuesday as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's annual conference this week for cues into possible rate cuts, and weighed Washington's efforts to end the war in Ukraine. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trumptold President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that Washington would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any potential deal to end Russia's war. This assurance followed Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which ended without an agreement. Trump described his meeting with Zelenskiy as "very good", and, in a social media post, said he had called the Russian leader and begun arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy. "In the unlikely event some sort of deal gets struck (between Ukraine and Russia), that could be a very negative surprise for the gold price," Rodda said. Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.5% to $37.82 per ounce, platinum rose 0.1% to $1,323.76 and palladium lost 0.9% to $1,112.34.

A new giant Ukrainian cruise missile is rumored to carry a 1,000-kg warhead for strikes 1,800 miles deep inside Russia
Ukraine has started making a new cruise missile said to be capable of carrying a 1,000 kg warhead with a range of 1,800 miles, according to its defense minister. Denys Shmyhal, who was appointed as defense minister in July, said at a public event on Monday that serial production of the missile, dubbed the Flamingo, had begun. The minister declined to discuss the missile further, saying that more details would be disclosed "when the right time comes." But his announcement comes a day after other sources in Ukraine reported on its specifications. Efrem Lukatsky, an Associated Press photographer, published an image on Monday of a large missile that he identified as the Flamingo. Lukatsky's Facebook post said the photo was taken on Thursday at a workshop run by Fire Point, a Ukrainian defense company. He also wrote that the missile had a range of 3,000 kilometers, or roughly 1,800 miles. After Lukatsky's Facebook post, the Ukrainian newspaper Mirror of the Week uploaded a video on Monday of what appears to be the missile being launched from an open field. In the clip, the Flamingo is seen rail-mounted on a canted platform before it is fired. The missile starts climbing upward almost immediately after launch. Mirror of the Week reported that the video depicted a Flamingo missile launched at a Russian target, indicating that the weapon is already being used in combat. In another video from the outlet, the missile is seen with fixed wings, like the Flamingo photographed by Lukatsky. The outlet wrote in a report on Monday that Fire Point said it tested the Flamingo several months ago and that the missile had entered mass production. Mirror of the Week also reported that the missile can carry a maximum payload of 1,150 kg with a range of 1,800 miles. The Flamingo looks a lot like another new missile The Flamingo bears a striking resemblance to the FP-5 produced by Milanion Group, a defense firm headquartered in Abu Dhabi that's been working with Ukraine since at least 2021. That year, the firm signed a memorandum of understanding with a Ukrainian company. Since the full-scale war started, it's also been providing its Alakran mobile mortar system and uncrewed ground vehicles to Kyiv's troops. Milanion Group showcased the FP-5 in February at a defense expo in Abu Dhabi. There, it said the missile is equipped with anti-jamming tech and satellite navigation and can fly for up to four hours at a top cruise speed of 559 mph. The firm also said the FP-5 can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kg and fly 1,800 miles. That capability also means the FP-5 is a gargantuan missile, with a 20-foot wingspan and a take-off weight of 6,000 kg, or 6.6 tons. That kind of size and weight for a cruise missile hasn't typically been seen in modern Western militaries since the early Cold War. By comparison, the US-made Tomahawk cruise missile has a take-off weight of up to 1,600 kg and carries a 450-kg warhead. And Russia's long-range Kh-101 cruise missile, which can fly up to 3,400 miles, has a take-off weight of roughly 2,400 kg. In its brochure on the FP-5, Milanion Group said it could build over 50 of the missiles a month. Despite these similarities, it's still unconfirmed if the Flamingo or the FP-5 are directly related. Milanion Group did not respond to a request for comment about the Flamingo sent by Business Insider outside regular business hours. Ukraine wants a long-range threat A range of 1,800 miles would allow Ukraine to strike deeper into Russia, potentially at military production facilities. A new missile of such devastating power and range means it can potentially threaten Russian hubs for armor, infantry fighting vehicles, drones, and artillery systems in the Ural Mountains, located some 1,000 miles from Ukraine. So far, Kyiv has relied mainly on slower one-way attack drones that resemble Cessna-style aircraft to attack Russian oil refineries and manufacturing plants in the Moscow area and beyond. The distance between Kyiv and Moscow, for example, is just 450 miles. Ukrainian kamikaze "drones" aka converted Ukrainian-produced Aeroprakt A-22 Foxbat light aircraft. These drones can reportedly deliver 300kg warheads at a range around 2000 - 3000 km. Ukraine has shown before that it can locally manufacture cruise missiles while at war. Its homemade anti-ship missile, the Neptune, is a subsonic truck-launched weapon that was used to sink the Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Trump works to broker bilateral meeting between Putin, Zelensky

The call came during Monday's negotiations between Zelensky, Trump and European leaders, who had gathered to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Trump said the future meeting would be followed by a trilateral meeting, involving the United States. On Monday night, the White House posted an Oval Office photo of Trump on the phone with Putin, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance looked on. Trump said Vance, Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff would be involved in coordinating the meeting between Putin and Zelensky. President Donald J. "I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky," Trump said. "After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years." Trump met with Zelensky earlier Monday afternoon to signal that the United States would provide Ukraine with "very good protection." "The security guarantees would be provided by the various European countries, with a coordination with the United States of America," Trump said. "Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine." Macron called the U.S. commitment for Ukrainian security guarantees the "first and most important" outcome of Monday's talks. "Today, it was agreed that we will work with the United States of America on the content of these security guarantees and the cooperation that each party is prepared to provide," Macron said, adding that any meeting would have to take place under a cease-fire. "Call it a truce or a cease-fire, but we cannot hold discussions under bombs," Macron added. Trump told Zelensky at the start of the meeting: "I have a feeling you and President Putin are going to work something out. Ultimately, this is a decision that can only be made by President Zelensky and by the people of Ukraine working also together in agreement with President Putin. And I just think that very good things are going to come of it." By the end of the day, Zelensky told reporters he is ready for "any format" of a meeting with Putin and said he would also participate in a trilateral meeting if there is progress in the first one. "I believe unconditionally we should meet and think about the further development of this path of the war," he said. Zelensky told reporters that the security guarantees included plans for Ukraine to purchase $90 billion in American weapons through European funding. Zelensky also said he and Trump had a long discussion about a map in the Oval Office, showing Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine. Rutte said Ukrainian territory was not discussed during the broader Monday meetings. Zelensky arrived around 1 p.m. EDT on Monday along with several EU leaders. Trump and Zelensky sat in the Oval Office, mirroring their meeting earlier this year. This time, they avoided the dramatic shouting match from six months ago in the same space. During the February exchange, Trump and Vance accused Zelensky of being "disrespectful" toward the United States and the Trump administration. Zelensky was much more complimentary during Monday's meeting, immediately thanking Trump for his efforts to stop Russia's war. Vance, who was in the Oval Office, said nothing this time. The meeting came after Trump's summit with Putin on Friday in Alaska. European Council leaders are scheduled to meet via videoconference Tuesday to discuss the meeting. The council's president, Antonio Costa, called the conference, he announced on X Monday. "I have convened a video conference of the members of the European Council for tomorrow at 1 p.m. CEST, for a debriefing of today's meetings in Washington, D.C., about Ukraine," Costa wrote. "Together with the U.S., the EU will continue working towards a lasting peace that safeguards Ukraine's and Europe's vital security interests." European leaders, including Rutte, Starmer, Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, accompanied Zelensky to Washington for the talks.
