(Sarawak public communications unit pic) PETALING JAYA: The Sarawak government has introduced the world's first artificial intelligence (AI)-based power conversion device after a partnership with a UK technology and innovation centre. Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg said the development of Keteq AI was a significant milestone for Sarawak as it showcased the state's commitment to building its own strategic technological capabilities. Abang Johari said Keteq AI, which was developed entirely by Sarawakian talent, was one of the key outcomes under the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 and Beyond initiative, which aims to position Sarawak as a high-tech hub in the Southeast Asian region. 'The development of this power converter is more than just the result of policy, it is a game-changing catalyst for Sarawak. This innovation represents a transformational leap in our technological landscape,' he said in a statement. 'Keteq AI has broad application potential, including in smart grids, electric vehicle systems, autonomous technologies, industrial Internet of Things, predictive maintenance systems, and critical control mechanisms.' Abang Johari said Keteq AI also promised high energy efficiency and was designed to operate on a scalable platform with real-time response capabilities. He said it was engineered with the capability to automatically detect and correct system disturbances in under 0.1 milliseconds, making it one of the most responsive systems in the field of smart control and power electronics. He said the project began last April after state-owned chip design and technology company SMD Semiconductor signed a memorandum of understanding with Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult, a UK government-backed technology and innovation centre focused on advancing the use of compound semiconductors in commercial applications. Abang Johari arrived in London on Tuesday to lead a state government delegation for a five-day working visit to the UK as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration in semiconductor development. The Sarawak premier is also scheduled to meet officials from the International Hydropower Association and Global Renewables Alliance, and to deliver a keynote address at a gathering of UK industry players and captains of industry. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Vietnam's lawmakers approve merging provinces, slashing nearly 80,000 jobs
Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: The move to streamline administrative bodies aimed to shift Vietnam's approach from passive management to active public service. (EPA Images pic) HANOI: Vietnam's National Assembly on Thursday approved plans to merge provinces and cities, slashing nearly 80,000 state jobs, as part of major reforms to the communist country's administrative structure. Lawmakers voted to reduce the country's 63 provincial and city administrations to just 34, as the government looks to radically cut state expenditure. Advertisement The move comes after the government cut the number of ministries and agencies from 30 to 22 in February, resulting in 23,000 job losses. Vietnam's top leader To Lam has said the drastic restructuring of the country's governance is needed if it is to achieve 'fast, stable and sustainable development'. In Thursday's vote, the assembly – a rubber-stamp body in a one-party system – approved the government's plans by 461 ballots to one, with three abstentions. Only 11 provinces and cities are left unchanged by the reform, with the rest all merged. Interior minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra said it amounted to the 'biggest ever revolution since the country was founded' in 1945, state media reported on Wednesday. '79,339 officials will have to be streamlined, quitting their jobs or submitting for early retirement following the merge,' Tra told the National Assembly. One provincial official told AFP he was 'shocked and sad' as he will have to leave his position after more than 30 years of public service. 'I may receive some billion dong in compensation, but I am not happy,' the 58-year-old communist party member said, speaking on condition of anonymity. 'I don't know what to do now though I think I am still completely fit for work.' The streamlined administrative bodies will be expected to 'shift from passive management to active service to the people', said Lam, the Communist Party general secretary and most powerful figure in the country. 'I think the merge is good for all and I fully support it,' said Nguyen Thang Loi, 52, from northern Thai Binh province, which is being merged. 'Though I feel really sad as the name of my native province, which has lasted generations, will now be gone. It's so weird to say I come from Hung Yen,' Loi told AFP. According to the government, all cities and provinces will announce their new leadership on June 30 and start full operation at the beginning of July. In the next few days, the National Assembly will vote on an amended national constitution, under which the country's three-level administrative structure of province, district and commune will be reduced to two. The middle district level will be eliminated and the commune level expanded. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SIPITANG: A total of 66 licensed roadside stall operators in Sipitang received a one-off RM5,000 assistance from the Sabah State Government today. The aid, part of the Sabah Budget 2025, was handed over by Qhazanah Sabah Berhad Chairman and Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob during a ceremony at the town's multipurporse hall. Advertisement Dr Yusof said the initiative aims to support small traders who are vital to the local economy. He emphasized that the assistance reflects the GRS-PH Plus state government's ongoing efforts to ease the burden of the rakyat. 'This is among several programs implemented to care for the welfare of the people, including SUKUR (Sentuhan Kasih Rakyat), the Sabah People's Insurance Scheme, and Rumah Mesra Sabah Maju Jaya,' he said. He added that the initiatives benefit all Sabahans, whether in urban or rural areas, countering opposition claims that the government has failed to deliver on welfare promises. 328 million e-invoices processed by LHDN so far
Published on: Thursday, June 12, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 12, 2025 By: Predeep Nambiar, FMT Text Size: LHDN's e-invoicing director Rasyidah Che Rosli said some smaller taxpayers have joined the e-invoicing system voluntarily ahead of their mandatory dates. GEORGE TOWN: The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has validated more than 328 million e-invoices since the country began its move towards a digital tax system last year. LHDN's e-invoicing director Rasyidah Che Rosli said the numbers came from about 35,000 taxpayers who submitted their records through the new system. Advertisement 'These are from users in Phases 1 and 2. Some smaller taxpayers have also joined voluntarily ahead of their mandatory dates,' she said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event by CTOS in Bayan Lepas today. LHDN is phasing in e-invoicing by company size, with Phase 1, which started on Aug 1 last year, covering large businesses with annual sales of over RM100 million. Phase 2, which started on Jan 1, covers companies with sales of between RM25 million and RM100 million. Phase 3 (RM5 million-RM25 million turnover) starts on July 1 and Phase 4 (RM1 million-RM5 million) on Jan 1, 2026. The smallest firms (below RM1 million) will come on board by July 1, 2026. The e-invoicing system, part of the government's plan to improve tax compliance and reduce fraud, is meant to help LHDN keep a better record of business deals and make it easier for taxpayers to fill in their tax forms. E-invoices, which let businesses report sales immediately or on a monthly basis, are sent in real time or in monthly groups. The system can also handle self-billed e-invoices, such as for transactions with foreign suppliers or people who do not run businesses. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
