Skubal started the reigning NL MVP Shohei Ohtani with a 99 mph fastball, which the slugger fouled off. While mic'd up, Skubal revealed he would try to get Ohtani to swing through an 0-2 changeup, but Ohtani eventually poked a 1-2 outside corner slider to center field for a leadoff single.
Second batter: Braves LF Ronald Acuña Jr.
Skubal got Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña down to an 0-2 count, but Acuña made contact on a 1-2 pitch and sent a slow roller down to Gleyber Torres at second base. The ball was hit so softly, however, and Torres playing for the double play Acuña reached first base on an infield single without a throw, putting the first two runners on base.
Third batter: Diamondbacks 2B Ketel Marte
Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte sent an opposite field double down the right field line, which scored both Ohtani from second and Acuña from first to give the NL an early 2-0 lead over the AL.

There was a bit of a scary moment with Padres third baseman Manny Machado up to bat as Machado fouled Skubal's first pitch off Raleigh's mask. Machado immediately checked in before resuming.
Skubal then struck out Machado on a 1-2 changeup that clipped the bottom of the strike zone, though the pitch was initially called a ball. Since the All-Star Game is using an automatic ball/strike system (ABS), a review from the booth was called that reversed the initial call, giving Skubal his first strikeout of the game.
Sixth batter: Dodgers C Will Smith
Three pitches later, he struck out Dodgers catcher Will Smith to end the inning.

When prompted for clarity on why shark boots made the list of things to never wear, Hidalgo eventually quipped, "Just not my cup of tea." From Jack Harris: The Dodgers held their annual Family Day on the field at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, rolling food trucks, bounce houses and a climbing wall onto the warning track in left field. Few of the players seemed to be in a festive mood, however. That's because the Dodgers warmed up for Family Day with a 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, the team's third straight loss and the 10th in 12 games in which they've been outscored 71-36. It's the team's worst 12-game skid since 2018. The loss was also the sixth in as many tries against the Brewers in the last two weeks, making Milwaukee the first team to sweep a season series of more than four games from the Dodgers in 20 years. 'Guys are getting frustrated,' manager Dave Roberts said. 'You see kind of more emotion coming in. We just haven't played good baseball.' But it gets worse: the Dodgers (58-42) might have lost first baseman Freddie Freeman for a spell. Freeman, who is among the team leaders in batting average (.292) and is third in runs (47) and hits (95), sustained a left wrist contusion after being hit by a José Quintana pitch in the sixth inning. Roberts said X-rays on Freeman's wrist were negative and the first baseman is considered day to day. 'That one, I held my breath,' Roberts said. 'I think we all did, because, you know, when you're scuffling and to potentially lose a guy for four-to-six weeks is obviously very scary.' Yankees Predicted To Lose Eugenio Suárez Trade Sweepstakes To NL Club

The New York Yankees are seemingly the favorites in the Eugenio Suárez trade sweepstakes when the Arizona Diamondbacks eventually attempt to trade him away. The Bronx Bombers desperately need an additional infielder, and Suárez is the top name on the market. There are a few reasons why the Reds could make this work. Cincinnati needs to add a third baseman. Noelvi Marte has been solid, when healthy, but the Reds recently began experimenting with him as an outfielder, which would clear third base for Suárez. Unlike some teams, the Reds don't have an everyday designated hitter. They can afford to swap guys in and out of the DH slot depending on the day. The Diamondbacks are also looking for affordable, young pitchers as the return in their big trades. The Reds could send Chase Petty, among other assets, to the Diamondbacks in this hypothetical situation. While the Reds aren't the favorites to trade for Suárez, there's a reasonable chance they could play spoiler for the Yankees and steal him out from under the Bronx Bombers' nose.
