Slugger Eugenio Suárez interested in Detroit Tigers return as trade deadline approaches
ATLANTA — The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to be sellers at the July 31 trade deadline, which means two-time All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suárez is likely to be on the move. Suárez, an impending free agent, entered the second half of the 2025 season hitting .250 with 31 home runs and a National League-leading 78 RBIs through 95 games, with an .889 OPS. In late April, he became the 19th player in MLB history to hit four homers in a game. The 34-year-old has been one of the best right-handed sluggers in the 2025 season. And he already knows where he wants to play. The Detroit Tigers. "To finish where everything started, it would be cool," Suárez said Monday, July 14, just one day before participating in the 2025 MLB All-Star Game. "It would mean a lot to me." WHAT HAPPENED: No positives from Tigers in All-Star Game as AL loses Home Run Derby tiebreaker Nearly 17 years ago, the Tigers signed Suárez out of Venezuela for a $10,000 bonus during the 2008 international signing period. He climbed through the minor leagues — from the Venezuelan Summer League to Triple-A Toledo — before making his MLB debut with the Tigers in 2014. That debut came June 4, 2014, against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park. He appeared in 85 games that season, hitting .242 with four home runs. On Dec. 11, 2014, the Tigers traded Suárez (and pitching prospect Jonathon Crawford) to the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Alfredo Simón. "Since I was there, it's been a lot different," Suárez said, comparing the Tigers of the 2010s to the 2025 Tigers. "It's a new team with a lot of young guys and a lot of talent. I think they have a really good chance to make it more than the playoffs this year." ABS TO MLB? Tarik Skubal shares opinion on ABS challenge system after using it in All-Star Game Coming out of the All-Star break, the Tigers hold a 59-38 record and an 11½-game lead in the American League Central, but they could use upgrades: a swing-and-miss reliever (or two) and a right-handed hitting third baseman. Suárez thinks the Tigers can win the World Series in 2025. He is still searching for his first championship after losing in the 2014 ALDS with the Tigers, the 2020 NL wild card with the Reds and the 2022 ALDS with the Seattle Mariners. "They got, for me, the best pitcher in the league right now: Tarik Skubal," Suárez said. "They got a bunch of good players. I think they really have a chance to win it all this year." [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] For the Tigers, utility man Zach McKinstry — who replaced Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña in the All-Star Game — serves as the primary third baseman, though he has played six positions this season, including more than 200 innings in the outfield. McKinstry is a candidate for regression in the final two-plus months: he hit .285 with an .836 OPS in his first 88 games after entering 2025 with a .220 batting average and a .643 OPS over the first 387 games of his career. It makes sense for the Tigers to pursue Suárez at the July 31 trade deadline. "We never know," said Suárez, a .249 hitter with a .794 OPS in his 12-year MLB career, spanning 1,566 games. "Baseball is baseball. I might be finishing where everything started. It doesn't sound crazy. We'll see." If Suárez lands elsewhere at the trade deadline — with the Mariners, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees among the potential suitors — the Tigers would still have another opportunity to acquire him in free agency this offseason. He is "definitely" interested in joining the Tigers. "All 30 teams are going to be on the list," Suárez said, "and Detroit is going to be one of those." Drama not enough to save MLB All-Star Game from ratings dip
ATLANTA: Mr Met and Mrs Met pose on the carpet for photographers during the 2025 MLB All-Star Game red carpet at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. - AFP ATLANTA: The first 'swing-off' in Major League Baseball All-Star Game history wasn't enough to save the Midsummer Classic from a 3 percent ratings drop. Tuesday night's game averaged a 3.8 rating and drew 7.19 million viewers on Fox, according to Nielsen, down from 7.44 million last year and the second-fewest on record for the event. It was 3 percent better than the record low of 7 million who tuned into the 2023 MLB All-Star Game. MLB's All-Star event still draws far better than its counterparts, with this year's NBA All-Star Game and the NFL's Pro Bowl Games each averaging 4.7 million viewers. Monday night's Home Run Derby drew 5.73 million viewers on ESPN. The All-Star Game itself peaked with 8.1 million viewers in the 9:15 p.m. ET quarter-hour, per making it the most-watched program on Fox since the Super Bowl. It also featured the first 'swing-off' to determine the All-Star Game winner. Each player got three swings. Rooker launched two over the fence, while Stowers went 1-for-3. Arozarena then hit one, before Kyle Schwarber sent all three out to give the NL a 4-3 running lead entering the final round. Aranda then went 0-for-3, clinching the bizarre National League victory -- technically a 7-6 win -- the league's second All-Star Game triumph in three years after dropping the previous nine. A rule change in 2022 provided what was left of the 41,702 fans with a spectacle they likely weren't expecting when they entered Truist Park in Atlanta. — Reuters 'It was interesting,' Schwarber said after being named the Phillies' first All-Star Game MVP since Johnny Callison in 1964. 'Exciting, fun. There's a lot of guys who deserve this (trophy), but I'm glad it's going home with us to Philly.' – Reuters

How did Tigers' Tarik Skubal pitch in 2025 MLB All-Star Game? Stats, highlights
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal started for the American League on Tuesday, July 15, at the 2025 MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta. This was Skubal's second All-Star appearance and first as a starter, after the 2024 AL Cy Young Award winner made an appearance in the 2024 All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Skubal pitched the second inning of that game following then-Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes in the first. Skubal pitched a clean second inning, getting Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich to ground out, Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm to fly out to center field and Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández to fly out to right field. DRAFT: Ridiculous, mind-blowing stat explains Tigers' first-round pick How did he do this time around? Here's the log of Skubal first-inning performance in the MLB 2025 All-Star Game: Tarik Skubal stats in 2025 All-Star Game Innings: 1 Runs: 2 Hits: 3 Strikeouts: 2 Pitches: 19 (16 strikes) Buy our book: The Epic History of the Tigers First batter: Dodgers DH Shohei Ohtani Skubal started the reigning NL MVP Shohei Ohtani with a 99 mph fastball, which the slugger fouled off. While mic'd up, Skubal revealed he would try to get Ohtani to swing through an 0-2 changeup, but Ohtani eventually poked a 1-2 outside corner slider to center field for a leadoff single. Second batter: Braves LF Ronald Acuña Jr. Skubal got Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña down to an 0-2 count, but Acuña made contact on a 1-2 pitch and sent a slow roller down to Gleyber Torres at second base. The ball was hit so softly, however, and Torres playing for the double play Acuña reached first base on an infield single without a throw, putting the first two runners on base. Third batter: Diamondbacks 2B Ketel Marte Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte sent an opposite field double down the right field line, which scored both Ohtani from second and Acuña from first to give the NL an early 2-0 lead over the AL. TIGERS UPDATES: 2025 MLB All-Star Game live blog Fourth batter: Dodgers 1B Freddie Freeman On his 13th pitch of the game, Skubal recorded his first out when he got Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman to ground out to third baseman Junior Caminero. Fifth batter: Padres 3B Manny Machado There was a bit of a scary moment with Padres third baseman Manny Machado up to bat as Machado fouled Skubal's first pitch off Raleigh's mask. Machado immediately checked in before resuming. Skubal then struck out Machado on a 1-2 changeup that clipped the bottom of the strike zone, though the pitch was initially called a ball. Since the All-Star Game is using an automatic ball/strike system (ABS), a review from the booth was called that reversed the initial call, giving Skubal his first strikeout of the game. Sixth batter: Dodgers C Will Smith Three pitches later, he struck out Dodgers catcher Will Smith to end the inning. Skubal's final stat line: One inning pitched, three hits, two earned runs and two strikeouts.
