Zawya21-04-2025
Doha, Qatar: Dukhan Bank announced its financial results for the three-month period ended 31 March 2025,and reported a net profit of QR437m, representing a 3% growth compared to the same period of last year.
The Group delivered a solid financial performance during the first quarter of 2025, reflecting the continued successful execution of its strategic initiatives and building on the strong momentum of previous years.
Bottom-line profitability grew by 3%, supported by a 5% increase in net banking income. The uplift in net banking income was driven by the Group's ongoing focus on revenue diversification and the strengthening of non-profit income streams. In addition, despite prevailing external headwinds, prudent management of funding costs contributed positively to the Group net banking income.
On the other hand, operational efficiency remained a strategic priority, with continued optimization efforts delivering added value to overall profitability. These results underscore the Group's resilience and ability to a sustained growth in a dynamic operating environment.
The Group's total assets remained at historic levels, standing at QR117.7bn at the end of March 2025. The asset base continues to be primarily composed of financing assets, which reached QR86.6bn and represent 74% of total assets, alongside investment securities amounting to QR19.6bn (17% of total assets).
During the period, the Bank maintained its financing portfolio, bringing the total to QR86.6bn. This aligns well with the Bank's strategic objective of steadily increasing market share, while maintaining disciplined and efficient resource deployment. The focus remains on achieving a well-diversified portfolio with an emphasis on asset quality over sheer volume, thereby effectively managing risk exposure.
Reflecting the Group's strong asset quality and disciplined credit risk management, the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio improved to 4.5% as of March 2025, down from 5.1% in March 2024 and 4.6% in December 2024. In parallel, the Stage 3 coverage ratio increased to 74.5% (March 2024: 71.5% and December 2024: 73.1%), reaffirming the Group's prudent and proactive approach to managing credit risk.
Total equity reached QR14.8bn, while the Group sustained a strong Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 17.9%, significantly exceeding the minimum regulatory requirements of the Qatar Central Bank and the Basel III framework, providing solid foundations to support future growth.

'Game changer': New rupee rule to deepen trade ties with India, says senior UAE official

A senior UAE trade and investment official has called India's latest rupee trade reform a 'game changer' that will deepen economic ties between the two nations. He predicted that non-oil trade would cross the $100 billion mark well before 2030, a figure he said looked unthinkable until just a few years ago. He noted that the move will not only benefit large corporations but also open fresh opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises on both sides. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on August 5 that Indian Category-I Authorised Dealer (AD) banks can now open Special Rupee Vostro Accounts (SRVAs) for foreign banks they already have correspondent relationships with, without needing prior RBI approval. What is an SRVA? An SRVA is a dedicated account that allows foreign banks to hold Indian rupees and process payments for trade with India. Until now, prior approval was mandatory. Industry experts say the change removes a long-standing barrier to local currency settlement. The reform has been widely hailed by UAE-based Indian business leaders, who say it will cut costs, speed up transactions, and strengthen the trade corridor between the two countries. Mohamed Haris, Chairman of Alhind Group, called it a positive step towards strengthening cross-border trade. He said the move will ease and speed up transactions between India and the UAE, benefiting businesses on both sides. Rohit Vachchani, co-founder and CEO of Merlin Group, said expanding the use of the rupee in cross-border trade and simplifying settlement processes will enhance efficiency and add resilience to the trade corridor. Historic bonds Highlighting the historic bonds between the UAE and India, the UAE official recalled how the Indian rupee was widely used in the Emirates in earlier decades. 'This reform builds on a long tradition of economic partnership,' he said. 'It will ease transactions, cut costs, and expand trade in ways that reflect our shared history and future ambitions.' 'Allowing settlement in rupees without prior approval will give Indian exporters a stronger competitive edge in the UAE and worldwide markets,' said Rayad Kamal Ayub, managing director of Rayad Group. Indian companies led by the tech industry would increasingly incorporate in the UAE, given the ease of doing business and tax benefits, he added. John Thomas of Dubai-based JV Thomson Chartered Accountants said the rules could encourage Indian companies hit by the recent 50 per cent US tariff on Indian goods to move manufacturing to Gulf countries, where tariffs are far lower. 'The UAE offers a strategic location, a favourable business environment, and a proven re-export model to the US,' he said. Exporters with large US orders are expected to lead the shift, followed by fast-moving consumer goods producers. The UAE is already a major destination for Indian investment, with more than 75,000 Indian companies registered with the Dubai Chamber of Commerce. Experts expect that number to rise sharply as more firms incorporate in the Emirates to leverage rupee settlement, CEPA benefits, and lower tariff exposure. Gagan Mehrotra, portfolio manager at Singapore-based Cocogem Fund, called it 'a visionary move' that will boost bilateral settlements without the 'cumbersome compliance' of third-currency transactions. 'A small Indian exporter can now bill in rupees without having to enter into complex foreign exchange contracts,' he said. The UAE is India's third-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $83.6 billion in 2023-24, according to India's Ministry of Commerce. Non-oil trade alone stood at $65 billion in 2024, boosted by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022, which reduced tariffs on most goods. Many products now enter the UAE duty-free, and re-exports via UAE free zones can avoid duties entirely. Banking analysts say integrating payment systems, card networks, and payment messaging between the two countries will be key to maximising the benefits of the RBI's move.

Norway's sovereign fund expects more withdrawals from Israeli portfolio

Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund, the world's largest, on Tuesday said that it expects more withdrawals from its Israeli portfolio. The announcement came one day after it said it was terminating contracts with external asset managers handling some of its investments in Israeli companies. It has also divested parts of its portfolio in Israel over the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. 'We expect to divest from more companies,' the fund's chief executive, Nicolai Tangen, said at a press conference. The fund announced that it had sold its stakes of just over 2 per cent in Israeli jet engine group Bet Shemesh Engins Ltd (BSEL). It provides services to Israel's armed forces, including the maintenance of fighter jets. Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), an arm of Norway's central bank, which held stakes in 61 Israeli companies as of June 30, in recent days divested stakes in 11, including BSEL. It did not name the other companies. The fund began investing in BSEL in November 2023, about one month after the war in Gaza began, through an external investment manager, Mr Tangen said. The fund declined to give details of the external portfolio manager. BSEL was later reviewed as a high-risk stock in May. That change should have been quicker, Mr Tangen said, adding that NBIM should have had a tighter overview of these investments earlier. 'We should have been quicker in taking back control of the Israeli investments,' he said. The review began last week following media reports that the fund had built a stake in BSEL, which did not respond to requests for comment. NBIM had held quarterly meetings with Bet Shemesh Holdings, but the war in Gaza was not raised as a theme. 'We had discussions about their business in the United States, not about the war in Gaza,' Mr Tangen said, adding that the fund had rated BSEL as a 'medium risk' stock with regards to ethics concerns. In a press statement issued on Monday, the fund said that Norway's Finance Ministry had requested that it review its implementation of the management mandate of the fund, its investments in Israeli companies, and to propose new measures that it deems necessary. It has until August 20 to respond to a letter sent by the Finance Ministry. The fund said that the 11 Israeli companies that it had divested from since June were 'not in the equity benchmark index of the ministry'. Last week, NBIM decided to sell all investments in Israeli companies that are not in the equity benchmark. All investments in Israeli companies that had been managed externally would also be brought in-house. 'These measures were taken in response to extraordinary circumstances. The situation in Gaza is a serious humanitarian crisis. We are invested in companies that operate in a country at war, and conditions in the West Bank and Gaza have recently worsened,' Mr Tangen said in that statement. The fund, which invests the Norwegian state's revenue from oil and gas production, is one of the world's largest investors, owning on average 1.5 per cent of all listed stocks worldwide. It also invests in bonds, real estate and renewable energy projects. On Tuesday, it posted a 698 billion Norwegian crowns ($68.28 billion) profit for the first half of the year, earning an overall return of 5.7 per cent in line with its benchmark index. 'The result is driven by good returns in the stock market, particularly in the financial sector,' Mr Tangen said in a statement.
