What Auburn and former Oklahoma QB Jackson Arnold said about his return to Oklahoma

Yahoo15-07-2025
When Oklahoma finally made its SEC debut last season, quarterback Jackson Arnold was considered an integral piece in the Sooners being immediate contenders.
After all, Arnold had been a ballyhooed five-star recruit coming out of Denton (Texas) Guyer High School, and Sooner fans salivated at the thought of Arnold paying huge dividends in helping make the transition of going from the Big 12 to the SEC an easier one.

However, it didn't quite work out that way.
The Sooners' offense was hit by a bevy of injuries, particularly at offensive line and wide receiver. And Arnold was besieged by a double whammy of turnovers and inconsistency, evidenced by him being benched during OU's very first SEC game, a nationally televised home loss to Tennessee.
Eventually, it led to head coach Brent Venables firing offensive coordinator Seth Littrell, who was in that role for only a handful of games.
Although Arnold eventually regained the starting job, and helped lead the Sooners to a rousing upset win against Alabama, the struggles all season by him and the offense eventually led Arnold to leave the program at season's end. He ended up going to SEC rival Auburn.

And, as luck would have it, OU's SEC home opener this year is none other than Arnold's new team, as Auburn comes to Norman on Sept. 20.
Arnold was one of the players invited to speak during SEC Media Days in Atlanta, as Auburn was one of the four teams represented on Tuesday. Naturally, Arnold was asked about his return to Oklahoma in an interview on the SEC Network.
'Yeah, it'll be a fun game; extremely excited for that one and, you know, no animosity whatsoever,' Arnold said in the interview. 'I just think it's gonna be a fun environment to go in and play.
'I really enjoy playing in that stadium.'
Then, Arnold was inevitably asked why things didn't work out the way it should have when he signed with OU out of high school.

'I mean, for whatever reason, you know, I just didn't play good. … Things happen; things happen for a reason,' he said.
'Sometimes, things don't work out the way it's supposed to be. You know, we're on God's timing, not our timing, and you know, for me, I thought the best decision for me was to move on and move on somewhere else and get a fresh start like you said, and go out and do what I know I can do with this Auburn squad this year.'
Later in the interview, Arnold was asked about Auburn's wide receiver room. He raved about their athletic ability; in particular Eric Singleton Jr., a transfer from Georgia Tech.
'It's impressive; it's like getting a whole bunch of unicorns in that room,' Arnold said of his receivers. 'They're one of a kind, they really are. … Like we've got dudes that can actually stretch the field and then on top of that, they can run fantastic routes.

'I feel like throwing to Eric Singleton is like throwing routes on air. … We were doing striders the other day and he was hitting like 22, 23 miles an hour while his toe was hurting. I'm like, 'What?' And he was talking like, 'My toe's bothering me,' and I'm like, 'You just ran 22 miles per hour, what are you talking about, your toe's bothering you?' … It's a special group.'
But Arnold's impending return to OU remained a major topic of conversation at SEC Media Days. He was also interviewed by Toby Rowland, the recently named sports director of Oklahoma City TV station KWTV who is also the radio play-by-play voice of the Sooners, with Rowland asking Arnold the biggest difference between Oklahoma last year and Auburn now.
'The scenery,' Arnold said. 'They have a lot more hills and trees.'

Former Texas players on the 2025 Longhorns' schedule

As Texas heads into the 2025 season, they are slated to face a number of familiar faces. Leading the way, a trio of former Longhorns will be waiting for Texas in Starkville later in the year. In one of the final games of last season, Texas ran into Arizona State and a number of former Longhorns, Zac Swanson, J'Mond Tapp, Troy Omeire and Prince Dorbah. They've had a number of former Longhorns move on to other Power 4 programs and a few that even found their way to other SEC programs. That movement is lessened, because of the rule that intra-conference transfers in the SEC can only occur during the winter window. Despite that, Texas will run into several familiar faces in the 2025 season, but it will take until October 25th, when they go to Starkville. There are a trio of former Longhorns on the Bulldogs this year that figure to play big roles. Brenen Thompson is further removed from his time at Texas, with a stop at Oklahoma in between. He has now found his way to Mississippi State and could very well end up being WR1 for the Bulldogs. On defense, you have two rotational pieces in Jaray Bledsoe up front and Derion Gullette that should play a role in that defense. The following week, Texas returns home against Vanderbilt and will welcome a former Longhorn back to Austin. Aaron Bryant found his way to Nashville this offseason and figures to play a large role in their defensive front. Bryant only totaled one tackle a year ago for Texas, but was a top 10 prospect in Mississippi coming out of high school. We will see if he can reach that potential for the Commodores. Texas gets a brief hiatus from seeing former players against Georgia and Arkansas, but they are quickly back to it for the Lone Star Showdown. Amari Niblack, the former transfer into Texas from Alabama, has made his way to College Station for the 2025 season. He is in great position to be the starter for Texas A&M to start the season, and could put together his best season yet. We will know going into that one how much Niblack will factor in, but he could be a major part of the gameplan for the Aggies this year. That does it for the former Longhorns that are set in stone on Texas' schedule, but there are a couple more they could run into late on. In a possible SEC title, they could very well see Sydir Mitchell and LSU or Jalen Catalon and Missouri. If Texas makes their third playoff in a row, there are plenty of other names that could factor into this equation. In the transfer portal world, there have been a number of 'homecoming' games in the last few years. Texas is slated to have a number of those this upcoming season, with Mississippi State being something of a reunion. We will see how much some of those players factor into the equation for their new teams, but it will be nice to see some familiar faces facing the Longhorns in 2025.

Hugh Freeze discusses the 'flash' of Omar Mabson early in Auburn's fall camp

One freshman running back is turning heads at fall camp. One week into fall camp, and the Auburn running back room is just as much a mystery as it was at the beginning. Earlier this week, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze shared that running backs Jeremiah Cobb and Durell Robinson would be limited due to injury. However, on Saturday, Robinson returned to the practice field while Cobb remained out, and projected starter Damari Alston was held out due to a heel bruise. Limitations for Alston and Cobb left the door open for a true freshman to shine in front of his new coaches. Following Saturday's practice, Freeze shared that he was pleased with the efforts of his running backs that were able to practice, including one in particular. "Man, the other guys are showing up," Freeze said. "Durell (Robinson) had some explosive runs. Alvin (Henderson), there's still a little learning curve for him, for sure. But I tell you the one who is flashing is Omar (Mabson)." Mabson joined the roster a year earlier than anticipated after reclassifying to the 2025 recruiting class and is quickly making strides with his new team. Freeze went on to say that Mabson is hard to tackle due to his 5-9, 213-pound frame and is great at finishing runs. Auburn's running back competition remains wide open with just over four weeks until the Tigers kick off the season at Baylor. With a mix of injuries and inexperience, the running back room will be fun to watch unfold as fall camp continues. Watch Hugh Freeze's press conference from Saturday here. Broncos roster: LB Drew Sanders (No. 41) competing for role on defense

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at third-year linebacker Drew Sanders, No. 41. Before the : Sanders (6-5, 233 pounds) played in the SEC for the entirety of his college career. Sanders played two years at Alabama from 2020-21, and he knows what it means to come out on top; Sanders won a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 2020. In two years at Alabama, Sanders played in 23 games, recording 33 total tackles (16 solo, 17 assisted, three tackles for loss), three pass deflections and 1.0 sacks. Sanders transferred to Arkansas prior to 2022, and he immediately exploded in production. In 12 games with the Razorbacks, Sanders made 103 total tackles (40 solo, 63 assisted, 14 tackles for loss), 9.5 sacks, five pass deflections, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Sanders' breakout season in 2022 caught the eye of the Denver Broncos, who selected Sanders in the third round (67th overall) of the 2023 NFL draft. Broncos tenure: Sanders dressed for all 17 games in 2023, making four starts, totaling 24 total tackles (13 solo, 11 assisted, one tackle for loss) and one fumble recovery. After missing the beginning of the 2024 season while recovering from an Achilles injury, Sanders returned late in the year and appeared in four games (plus the Broncos' lone playoff game). In limited action, Sanders recorded eight tackles (four solo, four assisted, one tackle for loss) and 1.0 sacks in 2024. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Near certain. Earlier this year, coach Sean Payton specifically referenced Sanders as an "inside linebacker," giving him some position clarity after bouncing between roles over the last two years. The Broncos brought in Dre Greenlaw this spring, but Sanders will still get an opportunity to compete for significant playing time as Alex Singleton is coming off a torn ACL and will turn 32 this season. Sanders isn't a lock to start, but he feels likely to make the active roster and have a key role in 2025. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
