Susan Sarandon ‘terrified but excited' to star on London stage
Described as a 'vivid, time-jumping mosaic of one woman's life', Sarandon and Riseborough will both play Mary at different ages over 70 years, with further casting to be announced.
Sarandon, who won the best actress Oscar for Atlantic City, has performed on Broadway – but has never trod the boards in the UK before.
Oscar-nominated Riseborough, who has starred in films including The Long Walk To Finchley and To Leslie, is returning to the stage after 15 years.
Sarandon said: 'I'm so honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus' final season at The Old Vic. Terrified but excited.'
The production will take place completely in-the-round, with the 200-year-old auditorium transformed to create a new seating configuration that will surround the stage.
Old Vic artistic director Matthew Warchus said: 'I'm delighted to be kicking off my final season at this wonderful theatre with this sensational new play from one of America's greatest living writers.
'And what a privilege to be featuring two such superlative actresses, Susan and Andrea, on the Old Vic stage – along with a large cast and creative team abounding with exceptional talent.
'I'm also really excited to be returning The Old Vic auditorium to perhaps my favourite configuration, and look forward to welcoming audiences to an unforgettable year of fully in-the-round, immersive, 360 degree performances.'
Riseborough said: 'It's an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts' poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon.
'I'm so very grateful to be working with Matthew again and thrilled to finally work at The Old Vic, a beautiful space. I look forward to us all bringing life to Matthew's remarkable vision for the play.'
Mary Page Marlowe premiered at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago in 2016 and opened off Broadway in 2018.
It will run at the Old Vic from September 23 to November 1.
Tickets are now on sale for members and will go on general sale from midday on Friday.

Braveheart is a load of bollocks, says Brian Cox
Scotland's greatest living male actor has finally admitted what the rest of the world suspected — Braveheart is 'bollocks'. Brian Cox, who agreed to star in the 1995 Oscar-winning film after repeated entreaties from its director and star Mel Gibson, said the script was 'crap' and that liberties were taken with historical accuracy. 'The film is just bollocks. It doesn't make any sense,' the 79-year-old actor told the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Cox revealed that he had initially turned down Braveheart, instead opting to perform in Rob Roy — another Scottish historical epic that was due to be shot at the same time. He said Gibson then pleaded with him to take a part in the film and Cox finally relented. 'I said, well, there is a very good part at the beginning, a guy called Argyle but I'm wrong for him because he should be cadaverous and thin. And he [Gibson] said: 'No, you can play it.' Cox added: 'I just didn't want to be in a kilt. Of course they didn't have kilts in those days but they had to have kilts [in the film] because that is what it is about.' In response to questioning from film critic Mark Kermode, Cox agreed the film was 'tosh-like', adding: 'It is a f***ing lie, the whole thing.' Braveheart, which won the best picture Oscar, has been lauded by generations of Scottish nationalist politicians, with the late Alex Salmond's Alba Party even channelling the film in a 2021 campaign advert. At its premiere in 1995, Salmond — in reference to the film's central character William Wallace being hung, drawn and quartered in London — said he would 'decapitate' his then political opponent, Michael Forsyth. He later ended a party conference speech echoing Wallace's battle cry from the film: 'Freedom, freedom, freedom'. It is generally accepted that the film, which charts Scotland's 14th-century fight for independence from England, was a boon for the Scottish nationalist cause. The SNP recorded its highest poll ratings in seven years immediately after its release. From its release, however, there were huge question marks over its historical accuracy, with the central romance between Wallace, played by Gibson, and Isabella of France, played by Sophie Marceau, entirely fabricated. One historian reportedly found 18 inaccuracies in the first two and a half minutes of the film, which still received ten Academy Award nominations. It won five, including best director for Gibson. Cox said that he had been drawn to the film because of Gibson, adding: 'He is great. Mel is wonderful to work with. He gets a bad rap but actually he is a really good man. I saw him deal with some lads [on the film] who were alcoholically inclined and he used to deal with them absolutely beautifully.' The script by Randall Wallace, which was based on the 15th-century poem The Wallace, by Blind Harry, earned the writer an Oscar nomination. The actor has been in Edinburgh playing the economist Adam Smith in James Graham's latest play, Make it Happen, the big hit of the Edinburgh Festival. Cox, who has become known to new generations through his role as Logan Roy in the drama series Succession, has also been working on his directorial debut, Glenrothan, which he stars in with Alan Cumming. It is due to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month. He also told the book festival he had postponed a planned solo talking tour after listening to his family, who had pleaded with him to reduce his workload. 'My family have been urging me to do it [have a break],' he said. 'Both my sons were worried about me. I'm fine but they do worry about me. And yeah maybe I have gone a wee bit too far. Maybe I have just got to stop.' Which means, one assumes, a Braveheart sequel is definitely not on the cards.

But it eventually vanished from public view and was thought to be lost, with only one copy remaining in the Pacific Film Archive, left there in the 1970s by director Murray Grigor. The film remained unseen by the public for years, until it was eventually rediscovered and restored by the BFI. In 2024, following a meticulous restoration that enhanced both its audio and colour, Big Banana Feet was finally given a new lease of life. It will now be shown on BBC Scotland on Saturday, August 23 at 9pm. The comic previously revealed how Dame Judi Dench kept a grave face - when she sent a selfie standing next to John Brown's tombstone. He gave one of his best ever screen performances playing the real-life Highland Ghillie opposite the Shakespearean actress as Queen Victoria in the 1997 Oscar-nominated film Mrs Brown. But 28 years on, the first Knight of comedy and the grand Dame of the stage have remained close friends, with Dench, 90, sending him a surprise snap of the servant's grave in Crathie Kirk where the royals have historically worshipped while staying at Balmoral. Speaking exclusively to The Scottish Sun from his home in Florida, Sir Billy says: 'We are great mates. She phones me all the time. 'She just sent me a message on my phone. Sir Billy Connolly honoured with BAFTA Fellowship - BAFTAS 2022 "She was standing at the grave of John Brown - the guy I played. She went to see him. She fell in love with him.' Sir Billy portrayed the fiercely loyal Brown, who became one of Queen Victoria's most trusted lieutenants during her 40 years of mourning following the death of her husband Prince Albert. It was even rumoured the Monarch and the Scotsman had a long running love affair. Asked if he had researched the royal aide before taking on the role, Sir Billy quipped: 'All I knew about Brown was he'd had it off with the Queen - what else do you need to know? 'But that's a magic movie. It's wonderful.'
