Fun and frolic mark sports day meant for Miss World contestants
Hyderabad, After back-to-back visits to various tourist destinations in Telangana, the Miss World 2025 contestants indulged in sports on Saturday.
A celebratory mood filled Hyderabad's Gachibowli Indoor Stadium as the contestants practised yoga postures, then competed in badminton, chess, and other games for Sports Day on Saturday.
It was fun and frolic all the way for the contestants as they cheered each other and treated themselves to friendly banter.
Thoroughly enjoying the day, the participants also danced and waved to the crowds.
Telangana Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, and Miss World CEO Julia Morley attended the event at the indoor stadium.
Speaking on the occasion, Shukla said the Sports Day, a unique combination of sports and Miss World, sends out a message of fitness, inspiring the younger generation to remain fit and be healthy, he said.
Shukla, who hailed the mega event which saw participation of representatives from 109 countries and still more expected to join, appreciated the Telangana government for its endeavour in organising the pageant on such a grand scale.
The visits of Miss World contestants to various tourist destinations in different districts would motivate rural people, he said.
The Sports Minister, who declared the 72nd Miss World Sports Day open, hoped that the participants would become ambassadors of peace, love and prosperity for all humanity.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy would be introducing a new sports policy which prioritises sports development with a special focus on increasing women's participation, he said.
As part of this vision, the state government is setting up the Young India Physical Education and Sports University to nurture hidden talent, particularly among the rural population, he said.
This initiative would lead to greater women's empowerment and encourage more children to take up sports as a career, Krishna Rao said.
He said the primary purpose of hosting the 72nd Miss World pageant in Telangana is to introduce the state to the global stage.
Observing that tourism is one of the key industries that significantly contributes to job creation, he said exploring new places is also an act of social service as it paves the way for the generation of employment and livelihoods.

Gautam Gambhir addresses Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli voids in England, urges Shubman Gill & Co to come out of comfort zone
India head coach addressed the void created by the Test retirements of Rohit Sharma, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli in England and urged the young group led by Shubman Gill to come out of their comfort zone for success in the five-match Test series, that starts on June 20 in Headingly. The series against England embarks a new era for Indian cricket with the big three missing for the first time in Test cricket. While Ashwin called time on his international career in the middle of Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Kohli and Rohit bid adieu to their red-ball career within a span a four days last month. Addressing the new-look group, Gambhir spoke about the sacrifices and commitments to do something special in England. 'Guys, all I want to say is there are two ways to look at this tour. One is we are without three of our most experienced players or we have a phenomenal opportunity to do something special for the country,' Gambhir said in a video released by the BCCI. 'When I look in this group, I think the hunger, the passion and the commitment to do something special…the sacrifices, I think if we play out of our comfort zone, if we start fighting, not everyday, but every session, every hour, every ball, I think we can have a memorable tour,' added the Indian head coach. Earlier, Gambhir welcomed the newcomers in the side in a team huddle, with a special mention for Karun Nair, who is making a comeback into the Indian team after eight long years. 'Comebacks are never easy. Someone who has made a comeback after seven (eight) years had a phenomenal last year,' Gambhir said. 'Last year, no matter the runs you have got, and most importantly, that never-die attitude, never-giving-up attitude, that is something which has got you back into the team. That is something which is inspiring for this entire world. Welcome, Karun,' he added. Nair was rewarded with a place in the India Test squad, after the Karnataka batter's exceptional domestic season. The right-hander scored 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, averaging 53.93 with four centuries and two fifties in 16 innings. Nair also scored 135 in the final, thus leading his side to the title.

BCCI to take action after 11 killed in RCB IPL celebration stampede; decision likely on…
In the wake of the devastating stampede at Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left 56 others injured, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to deliberate the formulation of standardized guidelines for IPL victory celebrations during its 28th Apex Council Meeting scheduled for Saturday (June 14). The tragedy occurred last Wednesday when an estimated 2.5 lakh fans flooded the stadium and its surrounding areas in an attempt to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes following an IPL team's title celebration. The overwhelming crowd quickly spiralled into chaos, resulting in one of the worst crowd-control failures in Indian sporting history. Acknowledging shortcomings in the handling of the celebratory event, the BCCI has now made the formulation of crowd and safety regulations for future IPL celebrations a top agenda item. 'The need for formulation of norms for IPL victory celebration will be discussed during the meeting,' a senior BCCI official confirmed to news agency PTI. Sources suggest that the guidelines may include measures to ensure public safety, such as pre-event crowd caps, mandatory coordination with local law enforcement, designated celebration zones, and ticketed or limited-access fan events. The Council is expected to consult with state associations, security experts, and IPL franchise managements to build a framework that balances fan engagement with necessary safety protocols. While the IPL celebration regulations take centre stage, the meeting will also cover several other significant governance and operational issues: The Council will reassess the mechanisms in place to combat age-fudging in junior cricket, particularly affecting the Under-16 boys and Under-15 girls categories. Tighter enforcement and digital documentation are expected to be on the table. Venues for the upcoming India–New Zealand bilateral series are also expected to be finalised, with an emphasis on logistics, weather considerations, and crowd control. A complaint by Karimnagar District Cricket Association president V. Agam Rao, alleging misuse of BCCI funds meant for infrastructure in Telangana, will be reviewed. Acting on this, BCCI Ombudsman Justice Arun Mishra has asked the Council to take 'appropriate action.' Player Conduct & Domestic Season Planning Updates to the BCCI Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, as well as the tournament allowance policy for BCCI employees, will also be discussed. In addition, planning for the 2025–26 domestic season and training programs for umpires and match referees will feature on the agenda.
