Newcastle ‘favourites to be RELEGATED' after agreeing to Aaron Ramsdale transfer as Toon fans fear goalkeeper's ‘curse'

FANS fear Newcastle are the favourites to be relegated after they reportedly agreed a deal to sign Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies have had a difficult transfer window after missing out on top target Hugo Ekitike to Liverpool, with key man Alexander Isak announcing his desire to leave. 1 They also failed to sign their first-choice goalkeeper James Trafford, who returned to Manchester City from Burnley. So Newcastle have now agreed a deal to sign Ramsdale on loan which includes an option to buy, according to The Athletic. Ramsdale was No1 at Arsenal between 2021 and 2024 but fans fear for Newcastle because he has four relegations on his CV. His most recent came at Southampton last season, while he also finished in the Premier League bottom three with Sheffield United and Bournemouth. Another relegation came early in his career while on loan in League Two with Chesterfield. After his latest drop fans were quick to declare that 'the curse is real '. One said: 'Relegationdale.' Another added: 'Ramsdale curse is real I'm afraid.' Newcastle's capture of Ramsdale could reportedly lead Manchester United to launch a bid for Nick Pope. He is out of contract next summer so could prove an affordable option for the Red Devils, who will be without No1 Andre Onana for the start of the season due to injury.

Newcastle reach agreement to sign former Arsenal star after missing out on top target in key position

Newcastle have reached an agreement to take a former Arsenal star on loan for the upcoming Premier League season, with the played cleared to undergo a medical. The Magpies have found it hard going so far in the summer window, signing only Anthony Elanga and missing out on the likes of Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford. While Ekitike joined Liverpool for £79million, Trafford had been one of Newcastle's top targets for over a year and it looked as though they would make their move this summer. Instead, though, Trafford has rejoined former side Manchester City in a deal that could rise to more than £31million in fees, meaning the Magpies needed to look elsewhere to strengthen in the goalkeeping department. They have moved quickly to recruit, though, with an agreement now in place for Aaron Ramsdale to join the club. Ramsdale, who was also monitored by Newcastle before his move to the Saints, is now likely move to St James' Park on a one-year deal, with the club having an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season. Howe is looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department after missing out on James Trafford Ramsdale, 27, worked with Eddie Howe before when they were both at Bournemouth together. Ramsdale played for the club between 2017 and 2020, before departing for Sheffield United. In 2021, he got his big-money move to Arsenal for £30m, and was briefly their No 1 but soon replaced by David Raya. As a result, he joined Southampton last season, but the club finished bottom of the Premier League and were relegated. Ramsdale moved to Southampton last summer for an initial £18m, and his contract runs until 2028, making an exit tough. Newcastle, though, appear to have found a way, and Ramsdale will now compete with Nick Pope for the No 1 shirt. The Magpies' pursuit of Ramsdale comes after Trafford was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle and is even thought to have told the club he was willing to join last summer. Howe's side were in talks with Burnley earlier this window over a deal, and later tabled a £27m offer for the England shot-stopper. But when Trafford left the Etihad Stadium two years ago, though, he signed a contract including a 'matching clause', meaning if City matched a bid offered by a rival suitor he would have to make a return. Ramsdale, who recently lost his place in the England squad, has been given permission to travel to Newcastle for a medical and to finalise the deal.

Newcastle send message to Manchester United over Nick Pope transfer

Manchester United have expressed interest in signing Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope to challenge current Old Trafford No. 1 Andre Onana. The Red Devils have not ruled out bringing a new goalkeeper to the club this summer to compete with Onana. Onana was rated as one of the best goalkeepers in the world prior to his £43m move from Inter Milan in 2023 but the ex-Champions League finalist has flattered to deceive at United. The 29-year-old made a number of high-profile mistakes during United's dismal 2024-25 campaign and was left out of some squads towards the end of the season. Already questioning Onana's future at the club, the Manchester United hierarchy discovered the Cameroon international would not play on the club's pre-season tour after he suffered a hamstring injury in training. Onana travelled to the States for the three-game Premier League Summer Series but is spending his time recovering ahead of the new season. Manchester United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers since Onana's injury blow and talkSPORT say England international Pope is the latest to be considered. Pope has been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League for the best part of a decade, making almost 100 appearances for Newcastle since his £10m move from Burnley. The 33-year-old was injured for four months last season and Newcastle's own interest in goalkeepers this summer has raised speculation over his future at St James' Park. Carabao Cup holders Newcastle have been heavily linked with fellow England shot-stopper Aaron Ramsdale, who wants to leave Southampton following their relegation to the Championship. Ahead of facing his former club last season, Nemanja Matic labelled Andre Onana as 'one of the worst goalkeepers in the club's history'. Onana had earlier claimed Manchester United were 'way better' than Matic's Lyon, who they ended up beating on their way to the Europa League final. Matic, who played for United from 2017-2022, said: 'You know, I respect everyone but to say that then you need to give the answer. 'If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United's history, you need to take care what you're talking about. 'If it was [Edwin] Van der Sar, [Peter] Schmeichel or [David] De Gea saying that, then I would question myself. But you need to have cover to say something like that.' Ramsdale's potential move to Newcastle would only increase speculation Pope will be sold as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at the Champions League club. Leeds United reportedly looked into the possibly of signing Pope earlier in the summer but Newcastle held firm and the Lilywhites have since signed Lucas Perri from Lyon for around £15m. While Newcastle are in talks with Southampton over a deal for Ramsdale, Sky Sports say the club have indicated they are not currently planning to sell Pope. Eddie Howe, planning for Newcastle's return to the Champions League, is keen to bring Ramsdale in but wants a new goalkeeper to challenge Pope rather than replace him. 'Nick Pope has performed admirably for them over the course of the last few seasons but unfortunately he's had a number of injuries,' Sky Sports' James Savundra said. 'Our understanding is Eddie Howe wants a goalkeeper to compete with Pope rather than replace Pope. 'You could have two England goalkeepers competing for the No. 1 jersey at Newcastle, knowing whoever gets it will have a great chance of going to the World Cup next summer.' More Trending In the injured Onana's absence, Altay Bayindir is Ruben Amorim's No. 1 during Manchester United's pre-season tour, but he too has been linked with an Old Trafford exit. United have shown interest in Emiliano Martinez but Aston Villa want at least £40m for the World Cup winner – a price the Red Devils are reluctant to meet. Manchester United have already spent over £120m on attacking duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. Their pursuit of a goalkeeper is seen as less important than bringing in a new striker – Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins are being considered after Viktor Gyokeres rejected them in favour of joining Arsenal.
