STRUGGLING households could get a lifeline worth up to £812 in one-off payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
The cash is available through Budgeting Loans, designed to help cover shock expenses like essential household items or unexpected travel costs.

It is important to note that this is not a grant, but a loan, and will be deducted in instalments from future benefit payments until repaid in full.
However, unlike commercial bank or credit card loans, there are no interest charges, making it a safer option for those struggling.
But there's a catch – only those who've been on certain benefits for six months can apply.
And while it's not free money, you'll only pay back what you borrow, with repayments automatically taken from your benefits.
Who is eligible?
Anyone who has received Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Pension for over six months is eligible to apply.
However, if you have earned more than £2,600 or £3,600 for combined couples in the last six months, it will not be granted.
Also if you have savings or capital over £1,000, the jobcentre will reduce the amount you can borrow by the amount of money you have over that amount.
For example, if you have £1,250 in your savings, your loan will be reduced by £250.
Capital is defined as savings and some types of property.
You also cannot apply if you are still repaying a previous Budgeting Advance loan.
If granted, repayment will usually be split over 24 months, but if you stop receiving the benefit, you will still have to repay the loan in full.
What shock expenses does it cover?
Whilst each case is assessed individually, some examples of what the loan is designed for are:
A one-off replacement, such as replacing a broken fridge
Work-related expenses such as purchasing a uniform or tools
Unexpected expenses, such as your car breaking down
Repairs to your home
Maternity expenses
Funeral expenses
Moving costs or rent deposit
Essential items such as clothes
For an exhaustive list, see the government website here.
How much can you borrow?
The smallest amount you can borrow is £100, but the maximum amount you are entitled to depends on your family situation.
You can borrow:
£364 if you are single without children
£464 if you are in a couple without children
£812 if you have children
How to apply for the loan?
Often, the terrifying costs that the loan is designed for are sudden, so you can usually expect a decision on the day you apply.
You can apply for the loan in the journal of your Universal Credit account, with your nearest Jobcentre or via the Universal Credit helpline on 0800 328 5644.
Your work coach will assess whether you are capable of repaying the loan and will ask about existing debts and capital.
Citizens Advice said that whilst you can't appeal the decision, if you can prove that your circumstances have changed, you can ask for it to be looked at again.
What if I am not eligible or haven't received benefits for six months?
If you have applied for Universal Credit or other eligible benefits but have yet to receive your first payment, you won't apply for a Budgeting Advance, but might apply for an Advance Payment.
This can entitle you to 100% of your first Universal Credit payment to get you on your feet, as payments are paid retrospectively based on your earnings from the previous month.
If you are within your assessment period and have had an interview at a Jobcentre you can apply online through your Universal Credit account and it will conveniently calculate the amount you are entitled to borrow.
If you have passed the first assessment, you will need to speak to your work coach or call the helpline.
Either way, you will usually have a decision on the day.
Like the Budgeting Advance, it is critical that claimants understand that Advance payments are a loan and will be docked off future payments.
New claimants usually are given up to two years to pay it back and in extreme circumstances, the repayments can be delayed up to three months.
If you stop receiving Universal Credit, you will still have to repay the loan through wages or an alternative benefit.

Among those set to close is its store in Chard, which announced in a Facebook post that it will be closing for good on September 7. The post told customers: 'We are sorry to let you know… This store is closing. Thank you to our wonderful colleagues for your support throughout our time here in the local community.' The shop has launched a huge closing down sale, with all items now 50% off. Customers have taken to social media to share their disappointment that the store is set to close. One customer said: 'So sorry to hear that you are closing, you are all great staff, you all helped me when I was not very well in your shop thank you all again xx.' Another said: 'Shame to hear, great bunch of staff always happy and helpful.' A third added: 'What a shame, sorry to hear this.' Two other stores have also announced they will be closing. One of them is the shop in Whitchurch, Shropshire, which will close its doors for good in the coming weeks. In a post on its Facebook page it said: 'We're sadly closing our doors, but that means big savings for you. 'All stock is reduced to clear - grab up to 50% off the original price.' Devastated customers also commented on the post, as one said: 'Thank you so much for your service throughout the 11 years we've lived in Whitchurch. 'I'm absolutely gutted that you're closing down and wish you all better luck in your next jobs.' "We have loved serving you and being part of the local community.' They added: 'We hope you will pop in to see us before we close.' The news comes after The Original Factory Shop announced it is shutting three more locations. The shop in Caldicot, Wales, closed for good last week. The store in Market Drayton, Shropshire will also shut its doors for the last time on September 20. Plus The Original Factory Shop in Nairn, Scotland, has also been earmarked for closure. Meanwhile, at least four The Original Factory stores closed last month. Among them was the shop in Staveley, Chesterfield, which shut its doors for good on July 12. The shops in Caernarfon, Wales, and Bridlington, Yorkshire, closed down on July 20. Plus a final store, in Cupar, Fife, was shuttered on July 27. In total, 26 shops have closed or are set to shut this year. The Original Factory Shop did not respond to our request for comment. What is happening at TOFS? The Original Factory Shop was bought by Modella Capital, a private equity firm, in February. Modella is known for taking on struggling retailers and has also recently bought Hobbycraft and WHSmith's high street shops. The firm quickly launched a restructuring effort to renegotiate rents at 88 The Original Factory Shop stores. At the end of April, Modella drew up plans to initiate a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) for the retailer. Companies often use CVAs to avoid insolvency, which could otherwise force stores to close or trigger the collapse of the entire business. They allow firms to explore different options, such as negotiating reduced rents with landlords. But The Original Factory Shop previously told The Press and Journal that a 'number of loss-making stores would have to close' in the restructuring. Do you have a money problem that needs sorting? DWP State Pension age could rise to 70 as people will have to work longer

DWP State Pension age could rise to 70 as people will have to work longer The UK state pension age is currently 66, rising to 67 by 2028 - but the Chancellor has said a review into raising the state pension age is needed to ensure the system is "sustainable and affordable" Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves (Image: 2025 Getty Images) Specialists suggest the State Pension age could be poised to increase to 70 years old, forcing individuals to work considerably longer before they can retire. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has indicated that an examination into raising the state pension age is necessary to guarantee the system remains "sustainable and affordable". ‌ The Government assessment is scheduled to report in March 2029 and Ms Reeves stated it was "right" to examine the age at which individuals can claim the state pension as life expectancy grows. ‌ The state pension age currently stands at 66, climbing to 67 by 2028 and the Government is legally obligated to regularly assess the age. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here ‌ Speaking to Newspage, Samuel Mather-Holgate, an independent financial adviser at Mather and Murray Financial, said: "The state pension system is ripe for squeezing, so an increase to the state pension age is coming down the tracks, probably to 70. Changing the triple lock would save a fortune, but it would be politically difficult as the older generation votes." The pension scheme consumes nearly 5% of the UK's GDP and this figure is anticipated to climb to almost 8% over the next 50 years. The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) cautioned that the expense will surpass earlier projections by £10billion annually. A Government assessment of the state pension age will be released in 2027. Unions have warned that any rise in the pension age could trigger strikes, reports Lancs Live. Article continues below Eddie Dempsey, the general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union, stated: "The UK state pension is already one of the worst in the entire developed world, which is a direct result of decades of governments transferring both our national and personal wealth to the super rich. "Any decision to squeeze more out of working people by forcing us to work even longer would be a national disgrace." He added: "Our members work in physically demanding, round-the-clock, safety-critical jobs. Many already struggle to reach retirement in good health, especially shift workers. ‌ "Raising the pension age even further isn't just cruel and unnecessary, it's a slap in the face to the very people who keep this country running. If this government makes any move to drastically increase the retirement age, we intend to lead our movement onto the streets and will not hesitate to protest nationally and take co-ordinated direct action." In response, a Government spokesperson said: "Supporting pensioners is a top priority, and thanks to our commitment to the triple lock, millions will see their yearly state pension rise by up to £1,900 by the end of this parliament. We have also run the biggest-ever campaign to boost pension credit take-up, with nearly 60,000 extra pensioner households being awarded the benefit, worth on average around £4,300 a year. "But we know there is a real risk that tomorrow's pensioners will be poorer than today's, which is why we are reviving the Pension Commission, to tackle the barriers that stop too many people from saving." OTHER BENEFITS NEWS Thousands of households on old-style legacy benefits are being moved to Universal Credit via Managed Migration. The whole process is expected to be finished by 2026 after it officially began in July 2022 following a successful pilot. Households receiving one of a number of legacy benefits have been receiving letters outlining what they need to do to move across to Universal Credit. Upon receiving a migration letter, claimants are given up to three months to make the switch. Fail to do this and it could lead to you losing access to your current benefits. The DWP has already closed new claims for four legacy benefits - tax credits, income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance, and housing benefit. Households still receiving income-related employment and support allowance (ESA) are now being urged to make the move to Universal Credit. ESA provides financial support for those unable to work due to illness or disability. Initially, the government planned to transfer all ESA claimants to Universal Credit by the end of 2028. However, this deadline has since been brought forward to March 2026. Meanwhile, households on benefits like Universal Credit might be eligible for free cash via the Household Support Fund (HSF). Plus, a record 8million people are now claiming Universal Credit, the latest figures reveal. Are you missing out on benefits?
