J-pop mega-group Arashi, wildly popular in Japan and elsewhere in Asia, said they would end their activities as a band following a final tour next year.
Since debuting in 1999, the five-member boyband have rocketed to stardom with their catchy, chart-topping music to become the face of Japan's now-defunct boyband empire Johnny and Associates, before going on a hiatus in 2020.
Fans have since been anxiously awaiting news of their return to the spotlight, and on Tuesday, the group said in a bittersweet announcement that they will perform once again next spring -- except that will be their final act.

"In the last year before our hiatus, we couldn't perform in front of you due to the pandemic", Arashi's official X account said Tuesday.
"The five of us will now reunite", it said, adding the idols, now in their 40s, will start preparing for a concert tour scheduled for around spring next year.
"And that tour will end our activity as Arashi".
An outpouring of gratitude and lamentations soon inundated social media, with the prospect of the group's disbandment dominating Japanese news programmes for much of Wednesday.
"Their dissolution is immensely sad and my brain can't quite process the information yet, but thank you so much for creating one last opportunity for us to see you all", one fan wrote on X.

Even Japan's top government spokesman offered a tribute, describing Arashi as the "national idol group that has commanded a big presence with their numerous hit songs".
"They have also taken on the role of promoting Japanese cultures overseas, and collaborated multiple times with the Japanese government to this end", Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.
Arashi's former talent agency Johnny and Associates admitted in 2023 that its founder and music mogul Johnny Kitagawa -- who died aged 87 in 2019 -- had for decades sexually molested teenage boys and young men under his tutelage.

Summer is here, and that means there's new anime for the season. For the shonen heads, there's returning fan favorites like Dan Da Dan and Kaiju No. 8, plus a new show by the name of Gachiakuta dropping next month. Based on Kei Urana's ongoing manga, the series stars Rudo Surebec, a teenager living in the slums of the Sphere who comes home to find his foster dad dead. Charged and found guilty of murder, he's condemned to The Pit, a massive dump site below town that's home to criminals and anything else considered trash by the Sphere's wealthy class. A man named Enjin rescues Rudo and invites him to join the Cleaners, a group of people who create weapons out of objects they imbue with their power and use them to hunt monsters made of literal trash. Rudo joins up with the Cleaners, mainly because he has dreams of making it back topside to get revenge on the Sphereites who dumped him to the surface. Gachiakuta is developed by Studio Bones, which helmed My Hero Academia and its current Vigilantes spinoff, and the contrast between the two shonen is so sharp. Rudo is so much more angrier than Deku, the pivot (and equally furious social commentary) may be enough to entice viewers to see what Bones does with darker material. Gachiakuta premieres Sunday, July 6 on Crunchyroll, with respective opening and ending themes by Paledusk ('HUGs') and Dustcell ('Tomoshibi'). Global premiere events with advance screenings will be held before then on July 4 and 5 in several locations, including the US, Japan, and Brazil. You can find the locations here.

Final Fantasy XVI is out on Xbox right now, and FF7 Remake is coming too
You can play the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XVI, on Xbox right now. Shadow dropped during today's Xbox Games Showcase, players will be able to experience FFXVI 's slick-ass kaiju monster battles, incredible voice acting, and ho-hum story (because, hey, you can't expect Square Enix to be perfect at everything). In addition to the base game, players will also get access to FFXVI 's two story DLCs The Rising Tide and Echoes of the Fallen which adds more story and a new Eikon (the game's version of summons) Leviathan. But that's not all as the partnership between Xbox and Square Enix continues apace. Last year, Xbox brought the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV to the system. Later it was rumored, due to Square Enix's stated desire to expand their games beyond the PlayStation ecosystem, that it would bring the Final Fantasy VII remake project to Xbox as well. That rumor has been proven true. The absurdly titled Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which is the first entry in the FF7 reimagination project combined with the Yuffie-centric DLC, is coming to Xbox this winter.

Persona 4 is getting a remake
The worst-kept secret in gaming is no longer a secret. At the Xbox Games Showcase, Atlus announced that a full remake of Persona 4 is in development. It's called Persona 4 Revival, and while there weren't many details revealed — like when it'll actually launch — we did get a brief teaser trailer. It's coming to Xbox and PC, and will be available for Game Pass subscribers. While it was just announced, the remake has seemed like a foregone conclusion for some time — and not just because several voice actors leaked its existence. Persona 3 received a similar remake last year with Persona 3 Reload, which was very well received, and in 2023 both Persona 3 and Persona 4 were re-released on modern platforms, introducing them to new audiences. Persona 4 — which added a murder mystery element to the long-running RPG series — was originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2008, though it received a major boost with the enhanced PS Vita version Persona 4 Golden three years later.
