Swimming great Cate Campbell blames CAPITALISM for making women feel bad about their looks as she hit back at trolls who slammed her over her appearance

Daily Mail15-05-2025

Australian swimming legend Cate Campbell has taken aim at capitalism for driving unrealistic beauty standards for women while hitting back at trolls who have targeted her over her appearance.
The four-time Olympian, 32, has been spending a lot of time in front of the camera doing media appearances since she retired from competitive swimming last year.
Cate explained that she loves the work, but seeing herself on screen so much has made her more aware of how she looks.
'Suddenly I've felt all my insecurities creeping back,' she said in an Instagram post.
'So much of society is about what we look like and the people who are on camera look a very certain way...
'I am 32 years old and I don't know what I'm supposed to look like and when I'm on camera and watching myself back all I can see are these wrinkles around my eyes or the puffiness or my eyelids or these lines on my forehead.'
Campbell's candid post was met with a wave of positivity from her followers, but it also attracted some attention from online trolls.
The swimming great fired back at them with a second video, noting that her post was 'not a critique on anyone's personal choices, rather an interrogation of the beauty standards our capitalist society has created for us.'
'There was your run-of-the-mill basic bitch trolls, which I kind of expected. "You look terrible", "Oh my gosh, I can't believe you're 32, you look more like 60, 50, 40" and that was pretty predictable.'
Campbell explained that she also received comments from people who she called 'concerned trolls'.
'They looked at me and they still thought that what I looked like for my age was unacceptable, but they couched their horror in concern and started trying to rationalise and figure out why I would look the way that I look at the age that I am,' she continued.
'I got told that I had too much sun exposure, that I should wear SPF, that I should not drink alcohol or eat sugar, that I should stay in the shade, that I should have all kinds of antioxidants.'
Some trolls even wondered if she smoked cigarettes and suggested that the former Olympian should 'lead an active, healthy lifestyle'.
'Do you know what one of the biggest, contributing factors to aging is?' Campbell said.
'It is stress and let me tell you, going to four Olympic Games is very stressful. So maybe that has something to do with the wrinkles on my face.'
Campbell went on to say that she's realised society views aging as something we can avoid if we try hard enough, rather than a natural part of life.
'It feels like we are unable to look at people and see their value based on what their faces look like because we look at them and if it doesn't fit into a very small, narrow beauty standard, we think that they should have tried harder,' she added.
'And I'm just not sure that I want to subscribe to that.'
She thanked all those who had sent messages of support - and then also addressed the negativity she's copped.
'I want to give a bigger shout out to the trolls or to the people who were writing in and giving me advice,' she said
'Telling me to stay inside, to put on SPF, to stay in the shade, to drink more water, to get more sleep who made me feel like what my face was doing was a failing on my behalf, was because I wasn't trying hard enough or doing 'the right things'.

Josh Kelly's and Remy Smith's doomed marriage from lavish wedding to sad split

Boxer Josh Kelly is returning to the ring and taking on Flavius Biea at the Newcastle Arena. Here, the Mirror looks back at the 'Pretty Boy' welterweight's former relationship with Remy Smith Josh 'Pretty Boy' Kelly, 31, is stepping back into the ring and taking on Flavius Biea, 35, at the Newcastle Arena - with hopes that securing a win will set him up for a fight with Connor 'Destroyer' Benn. With the former Olympian heading into his 19th professional fight, he has said he is keen to build on the momentum from the big fight - which will air on Channel 5 - and that he's ready to "enjoy" himself in the ring. ‌ "Whatever comes. I am just looking to go in there and enjoy myself," he has said. "When I am enjoying it, I am at my best, so whatever comes, I am just going to go in there and enjoy myself and forget about everything else. It is another fight, I have had 150 odd at amateur at the top level, now it is going to be my 19th fight as a pro, so it is all good... I cannot wait!" ‌ Both men are on good form, with the Romanian fighter enjoying a 12-match winning streak, and Kelly winning six fights previously - so boxing fans are bound to be in for a treat with this one. Whilst Kelly is going from strength to strength professionally - the 'Pretty Boy' of British boxing - who was previously a model - is increasingly attracting more attention outside of the ring and boasts 422,000 followers on Instagram. So what is life like outside of the ring for the 31-year-old dad of two? Here, the Mirror explores his life away from the spotlight and marriage to ex-wife Remy Smith. Early days of romance Josh and Remy - an influencer with 18,100 followers on Instagram - started dating in their early 20s, with Remy sharing a sweet snap of Josh leaning against the ropes of a boxing ring back in 2017, the same year he turned from amateur to professional. In another post dedicated to her partner in 2017, Remy captioned a sweet series of photographs of the pair with a touching tribute to Josh on his birthday. "Happy birthday to the fiancé...I just want to say I am so proud of an inspiration to so many people out there and that's something you should be proud working hard and I'll support you all the way through". ‌ Remy added: "It's only the beginning for you pbk [Pretty Boy Kelly]...thanks for making me the happiest girl ever. I love you from the bottom of my heart..." Hilariously, the couple also accidentally went viral in 2017, after a perspective-boggling holiday snap took the internet by storm. The image saw the couple standing in front of palm tree, but Remy just so happened to be carrying a handbag that was exactly the same colour as the tree's bark, which made it look like she was effortlessly carrying an entire tree. ‌ Remy took the internet's confusion in her stride, jokingly posting on her Instagram a screenshot from a Daily Mail article of the moment and captioning it: "My strength is seriously going viral now," and tagging her then-fiancé. Lavish Mayfair Wedding The pair tied the knot two years later in June 2019, in a seriously lavish ceremony. ‌ Boxing legend Frank Bruno was said to be in attendance, having been a mentor to Josh. Other big name guests reportedly included David Seaman, his wife Frankie who appeared on Dancing on Ice, as well as Ashley and Dawn Ward, and other faces from the boxing scene. Remy wore a stunning bridal gown designed by Galia Lahav with a dramatic long veil that featured intricate embroidery around the edge. Josh opted for a timeless white suit jacket by Tom Ford, with a black bow tie and smart, matching trousers. ‌ The couple tied the knot at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church bang slap in the middle of one of London's most luxurious neighbourhoods. They then hosted a reception for all 165 of their loved ones - per the wedding photographer, Roberta Facchini - at the elite Royal Horseguards Hotel. The photographer also revealed that the guests were kept entertained by a magician and that the dinner was accompanied by "touching speeches" adding that, "the ambience of the beautiful reception was classy sophistication with a healthy touch of down-to-earth". When it came to the flowers, no expense was spared, with gorgeous arrangements placed on every table, and an incredibly extravagant flower arch behind the top table. Similarly, the wedding cake was stunning - with delicate floral decorations on the seven-tiered creation. ‌ Finally, when it came time to take to the dancefloor, the newlyweds chose Always Remember Us This Way - from the A Star Is Born soundtrack - for their first dance before their loved ones joined them for a boogie. Growing family The couple share two sons, the eldest of whom was present at their wedding. ‌ The boxer and Remy welcomed Joshua Junior to their family in the Autumn of 2018, with Remy sharing a heartwarming post in tribute to her first born: a photo of Joshua Junior as a tiny baby cuddling up to a massive, oversized teddy bear. " Little man is one week old today and what a week it's been," she wrote. "It's been the most amazing no love like it! I couldn't have done it without you the most amazing daddy and he is so lucky to have you," she added, tagging her partner, who seemed to have been called away from the newborn bubble for a boxing obligation. "We are missing you but tomorrow is the night you get under them lights again we are so proud of you! We can't wait to cheer you on and have you home again! Our champ". ‌ In May 2020, the couple welcomed their second son: Roman Paul Kelly. At the time social distancing restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made labour for many women more lonely and frightening. Whilst Remy didn't share any details on how, or if, the pandemic impacted her experience giving birth, she hinted that it had been something of an overwhelming experience when she announced on social media that Roman had arrived. ‌ "Here he is it's certainly been a ride the last 24 hours, but our 6 pound 5 bundle of joy Roman Paul love you with all our hearts and can't wait to take you home to your big brother". Break u While both Remy and Josh regularly post their two beautiful sons on their social media - it seems the young couple have called it quits on their romance. The last time Josh mentioned his former wife on his social media was back in February 2023, when he captioned a holiday snap of himself with JJ and Roman by saying, "Love seeing my two boys growing up nothing more more sun and sand soon to and cheese these me and the wife @remykellyx live for these two little men." ‌ Remy has also changed her Instagram handle back to Smith, changing it from her married name of Kelly. What's more, Josh and Remy have also posted snaps with new partners this year, so it seems the pair have both moved on from the split. ‌ These days, 'Pretty Boy Kelly' is now dating a digital creator and founder of a marketing agency - Bego Maestro, who lives in Seville. The couple seem to be making it work long distance, with Bego captioning a post about Josh by saying, "The one who didn't want to love, is counting the days to see you again... "After all these months, the distance still makes me ball but without a doubt, having a date to see each other again makes the difference," and hinted that she was excited for the big fight, "Countdown begins to see us and your big proud of you". Bego and Josh have enjoyed a series of holidays together, heading on a luxury holiday to Dubai in recent months, and also taking his two little boys on holiday, including on a day to a waterpark. Remy also seems to have found new love, posting a series of cute snaps with her current partner, and captioning one: "Finding my best friend and soulmate in one person is truly special. Thank you for the endless giggles and smiles! I love you forever" and in another writing, "No one comes close".

Mel C flaunts her sizzling six-pack as she shares slew of snaps from recent trip Down Under - including a loved-up display with new boyfriend Chris Dingwall

Mel C flaunted her rock hard abs in a slew of snaps on Instagram on Thursday while reflecting on her recent trip Down Under. Sporty Spice, 50, jetted off to Australia in March with her boyfriend Chris Dingwall ahead of the Australian Grand Prix - where she was booked to play a DJ set. But after returning back to the UK in preparation for festival season, Mel is seemingly suffering with holiday blues as she gave fans an insight into her getaway. Captioning the post: 'Missing life down under,' the first photo shared by the pop star showed her indulging in some seaside yoga while showing off her impressive physique. Donning a pair of shorts and a dark blue sports bra, Mel flaunted her sizzling six-pack while stretching her arms towards the sky for the snap. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Her abs were again on show in an later photo, with Sporty Spice unsurprisingly enjoying a visit to the gym in a matching shorts and bra combo. It wasn't all sports and yoga for Mel Down Under however, with the slew revealing that she had taken in a Dua Lipa performance during her trip away. And the 50-year-old seemed to be having a whale of a time watching the British superstar's Radical Optimism tour, with Mel filmed dancing the night away in the crowd. In another video, Mel revealed exactly how she manages to wear stilettos for an entire day - by taping her toes together. The footage showed a man - presumably her stylist - prepping the Spice Girl to slip into a pair of heels while explaining exactly how the method works. 'The science says that by taping toe two and three together, it will redistribute the pressure on the foot meaning Melanie can do a full day in the world's most heeled high heels,' he said. '(Our inspiration is) Vanessa Williams while performing in The Devil Wears Prada, she told the world that this was the secret to getting through a full day in stilettos, and let's see if she's a liar.' Mel also put on a loved-up display with her film director boyfriend Chris, who is believed to be in his 40s, in a selfie shared to her Instagram on Thursday. While it remains unclear how the couple met, they confirmed romance rumours last June when they attended Glastonbury together. Chris - who stands at around 185cm tall - is a model who has also tried his hand at acting, writing and film directing. During their time together in Australia, the couple were pictured sharing a cheeky kiss while enjoying a day on the beach. Since going public with their romance, Mel and Chris have also enjoyed a summer break in Ibiza together. They were seen sharing a steamy kiss during a PDA-filled boat ride on the island. In July, Mel also cosied up to her new partner as they enjoyed a day out at Wimbledon in south west London. The singer keeps her love life largely out of the spotlight but previously spoke about how she was banned from dating in the early days of the Spice Girls - while her bandmates were free to pursue romances. 'Looking back what struck me was it was one rule for one and another for the others, right?' she previously told Australia's The Project. 'I think when you are vulnerable as well, people go, I don't think it's good for you'. Mel said the rule for the other women was, 'she is fine, she can have a boyfriend, she can cope with having a boyfriend, she is strong enough but you are not'. 'It makes you question yourself when you are already vulnerable,' Mel added. On Thursday, it was reported that Simon Fuller – the man who managed the band, created Brand Beckham and helped found Victoria Beckham's fashion empire – is keen to organise a tour to mark the group's 30th anniversary next year. He has the support of Mel C, Mel B and Emma Bunton, and has spent more than a year trying to win Geri Halliwell-Horner round to the idea. A source told The Mail's Alison Boshoff: 'Geri isn't interested in stepping foot on a stage again.' So the plan she agreed to was for Abba-style avatars of the girls, which would 'perform' in concert. But Victoria is being left out of discussions and will not be part of the virtual line-up. A source said: 'Simon Fuller planning a tour has caused yet another schism. Victoria is f****d off that they have gone with him and there is no way that she will be a part of it. 'The bad feeling seems to go back to her and David having to spend millions on buying him out of Beckham Brand Holdings. He still has a stake and board seat on her fashion business. There is resentment there. 'Geri wants to do the avatars idea. She isn't interested in coming back and doing a tour. She doesn't need to. This is the one idea which Simon has had which has tempted her.' The source added: 'Simon Fuller is the only person who could get Geri to rejoin the Spice Girls, but he is the one person in the world who could never persuade Victoria.' No wonder only Mel C and Emma Bunton went to Mel B's 50th birthday celebrations in Leeds last weekend. All of the 'girls' showed up for Victoria's 50th birthday last year, but it seems that they are in separate camps once again. In fact, there has not yet been a meeting to discuss plans with Geri and the other Spice Girls in the same room because 'at any given point

Superjesus singer Sarah McLeod says the Australian music industry is still very much a 'blokes game'

Rocker Sarah McLeod has revealed that, when it comes to sexism in the Australian music industry, little has changed in decades. As frontwoman for The Superjesus, McLeod has enjoyed a 30 year career that has spawned four studio albums and three ARIA Awards. Speaking to he Daily Telegraph, McLeod, 52, who is also chair of advocacy group Women In Music, said that there had been little done to redress gender imbalances within the industry. 'Things have changed marginally but since I took on this role and I'm looking at the statistics, I see total imbalance everywhere,' she said. She said that statistics have shown that when it comes to festivals, female representation clocks in at around 'five percent or ten percent.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The Superjesus were certainly no strangers to the Aussie festival circuit, being regular fixtures on the liked of Livid, Homebake, and the Big Day Out. She admitted that while once thinking the band missed out on festival slots due to lack of talent, she has since changed her tune. 'I used to think we didn't get chosen for festivals, or another female-fronted band didn't get picked, because we weren't good enough,' she told the publication. 'But over the years I've realised that it is still very much a blokes' game, and we play it the best we can.' It was a similar sentiment that McLeod expressed when talking to The Music in 2023. 'It still is very much a male-dominated world, and I don't think it's changed as much as it should have, but at least we're aware of it now,' she said. 'The discussions are open, but it's still very much a male-dominated world.' She added that in the early days of The Superjesus she felt like just one of the guys, until choosing to embrace her femininity on stage. 'I used to think we didn't get chosen for festivals, or another female-fronted band didn't get picked, because we weren't good enough, But over the years, I've realised that it is still very much a blokes' game, and we play it the best we can,' she added. Pictured: The Superjesus in 2001 'I was very much a scrappy little tomboy for the first ten years of my career. And I just became one of the fellas, and I was cool with that, she said. 'But it wasn't until a good decade in, where I was like, "Wait a minute, I'm going to stretch my femininity here and embrace my power. 'I don't need to be one of you guys. I've got something else I could be, something better".' Sarah caused a stir, back in 2014, after she hit out at a touring festival, from which The Superjesus were dropped, for being too male-centric. In a post to Facebook at the time, McLeod claimed that The Superjesus and the Baby Animals, fronted by Suze DeMarchi had been culled from a Day On The Green tour to make way for iconic UK rocker Billy Idol. 'Guys, I'm sorry to say this and we do not know why this has happened but The Superjesus and the Baby Animals have been booted off A Day On The Green in favour of adding Billy Idol,' she wrote. 'So it's now Billy, Cheap Trick, The Angels and The Choirboys. They will refund your tickets if you are no longer interested in attending this sausage fest.' 'It still is very much a male-dominated world, and I don't think it's changed as much as it should have, but at least we're aware of it now,' she said. 'The discussions are open, but it's still very much a male-dominated world' In a response to The Music, A Day On The Green promoter Michael Newton said gender did not play a role in the decision. 'I did not even think about it being a gender issue. It's bullshit, to be honest,' he said. The Superjesus are currently riding high off the back of the release of their fourth studio album in March. The self-titled album debuted in the top ten of the ARIA Album chart upon release marking their first top ten berth since 2000's Jet Age. The single, Something Good, given the remix treatment by Paul Mac, is also currently sitting at number 15 on the ARIA Club Tracks chart. Hot on the heels of their latest success, The Superjesus are now embarking on a national tour.
