Duterte Youth asked to explain nominee's use of 'Cardema' in CONA

GMA Network10-06-2025
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has issued a letter to the Duterte Youth partylist, asking the organization to explain its first nominee's use of a different surname on her Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination (CONA) for Eleksyon 2025.
In a virtual interview on Tuesday, Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia said their law department wrote to Drixie Mae Cardema, directing her to address her use of a different family name on her CONA.
This, after reports on social media alleged that her actual name was Drixie Mae Suarez.
'Ginawa ng law department na letter instead kasi ayaw natin sabihin na may formal na kaso na agad sila na kakaharapin,' Garcia said.
(We opted for a letter because we don't want to say that there will be formal charges against them.)
'Wala namang problema ang pagpapaliwanag muna kasi syempre. Ito ay motu proprio ng Commission,' he added.
(There is no problem if we ask them to explain first.)
The Duterte Youth party-list was provided three days to respond.
Duterte Youth chairperson Ronald Cardema previously said their first nominee used a different surname for 'name recall'.
'First of all, Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Drixie Mae Suarez-Cardema is the sister of former Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Ducielle Marie Suarez-Cardema,' said Ronald, the partylist chairperson and husband of Ducielle said.
'In the start of every Congress, congressmen and senators, formally request the House and the Senate for the political names that they prefer to use for the entire Congress because name recall is key to Philippine politics,' he added.
Meanwhile, Garcia clarified the poll body is not singling out the partylist, adding the law department only 'needs to settle the issue.'
'Ang ating garantiya sa mismong nominee, wag silang mag-alala. The Comelec will always be fair, impartial, and will always be reasonable and just sa pagtingin sa issue na ito,' he added.
(We want to assure the nominee that the Comelec will always be fair, impartial, reasonable, and just in deciding on this case.)
Garcia previously clarified the case will not affect Drixie's nomination and possible proclamation, saying there were no formal petitions filed for the cancellation of her nomination. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

SC upholds Comelec ruling on Quezon candidate disqualification

According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. Seeking to remove doubts about the legality of the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) ruling, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday announced that it upheld the disqualification of Matt Erwin Florido as representative of Quezon Province due to alleged vote buying. According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. This stemmed from a complaint filed by registered voters and residents of Buenavista, alleging that Florido's camp distributed P1,000 bills along with free food, shirts, and transportation during a gathering on April 5 and 6. In his petition with the SC, Florido said that Comelec committed grave abuse of discretion and argued that the event was only for his campaign volunteers. The SC, however, noted that the event was not exclusive to campaign staff. It said that the event was clearly intended to gain electoral support. Aside from this, the SC said the distribution of cash and other items were not properly documented or liquidated. 'The SC emphasized that the lack of receipts, logbooks, or other records indicated that the funds were used to influence voters — constituting vote-buying under the Omnibus Election Code,' it said in a statement. According to the High Court, Florido's presence at the event also showed his knowledge and implied his approval. 'Although Florido ultimately lost in the 2025 elections, the SC still resolved the case to remove any doubts about the legality of the COMELEC's decision,' it said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Comelec eyes implementing e-registration for BSKE voter registration

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is mulling to implement e-register or online registration in October should the Baranggay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) be formally postponed. Comelec chairperson George Erwin Garcia made the remarks on Monday following reports of some registrants fainting during the ten-day nationwide voter registration last week. 'Dapat meron na tayong online registration,' Garcia said. 'Mayroon na tayong mandato na kaya lang di siguro na-highlight. Amin pong patitibayin at paiigtingin ang e-register natin.' (We already have the online registration system as well as the mandate for it. However, it was not highlighted. We will reinforce and strengthen it.) Under the e-registration system, Garcia said applicants will submit their forms online. They will then be provided with a scheduled date to visit their local Comelec offices and have their photos, fingerprints, and oath taken. 'Almost sure na ito ay ipapatupad natin, 'yung e-register. Subalit kailangan pa rin pumunta sa local Comelec para lang magpa-picture, sign, at kuhanan ng fingerprints,' he said. (It is almost sure that we will implement the e-register but they still need to visit their local Comelec offices for photos, signature, and fingerprints.) 'Kailangan namin yun para sa biometrics at maikumpara namin sa existing registration,' Garcia added. (We need that for biometrics and to compare them with the existing registration.) More than 2.7 million Filipinos registered during the voter registration for the 2025 Baranggay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) — higher than the number of applications for the recent polls. Garcia reiterated this is 'the most successful voter registration in history' and said 65%-67% of the registrants were youth. 'Overall, generally peaceful ang ating registration. Napaka-matagumpay po ito. Again, inuulit natin, ito ang pinakamatagumpay na registration sa kasaysayan ng buong Commission, ng registration, ng ating election,' he said. (Overall, the registration period [was] generally peaceful. It is a victory for us. It is also, again, the most successful registration in the history of the Comelec, our registration, and our elections.) 'Nakakatuwa, sampung araw almost 2.8M ang nagpa-rehistro…Nalagpasan pa ang registration na ginawa namin nitong nakaraang taon,' he added. (We're happy that almost 2.8M registered during the ten-day period. That surpasses our registration last year.) The ten-day nationwide voter registration for the 2025 BSKE started on Friday, August 1 until Sunday, August 10. However, voter registration in SRAP sites was opened until Thursday, August 7. Earlier, the Comelec said it will resume the voter registration in October to July next year should the BSKE be formally moved following the signing of a proposed bill seeking to extend the term of office for the barangay and SK officials from three to four years, and postpone the elections to the first Monday of November 2026. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced he will sign the proposed measure. The 2025 BSKE is initially set on December 1, 2025. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

More than 2 million Filipinos registered during the ten-day nationwide voter registration for the 2025 Baranggay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE), according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec). The total number of voter applications exceeded the Comelec target of 1.5 million registrants for the registration period. Based on the data of the poll body, the total number of applications stood at 2,727,643. Of the figures, Region IV-A (Calabarzon) recorded the highest number of voter registration with 324,017. It was followed by Negros Island with 234,032; and Region III (Central Luzon) with 220,650. Region V (Bicol) recorded 206,845 while the National Capital Region (NCR) reported 188,702 registrants. The Special Register Anywhere Program (SRAP) sites in Metro Manila received 10,549 applications. Poll chief George Erwin Garcia previously said the voter registration for the 2025 BSKE as 'the most successful voters registration in history. The most in number in the shortest period.' The ten-day nationwide voter registration for the 2025 BSKE started on Friday, August 1 until Sunday, August 10. However, voter registration in SRAP sites was opened until Thursday, August 7. The Comelec earlier said it is eyeing to register 1 million voters during the registration period. It increased its goal to 1.5 million after it hit its target just five days within the registration period. The poll body likewise said there will be no extension for the BSKE voter registration period. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
