Jon Ruben remanded into custody on child cruelty charges after children fell ill at summer camp
Jon Ruben, 76, appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court today following the alleged incident at a summer camp in Stathern, Leicestershire.
Ruben spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.
Police received a report of children feeling unwell at a camp being held at Stathern Lodge, near Melton in Leicestershire, last Sunday.
Officers said paramedics attended the scene and eight boys - aged between eight and 11 - were taken to hospital as a precaution, as was an adult. They have since been discharged.

A person has died following an arson attack on a car in Co Tyrone. Police said a body was discovered after the blaze was extinguished in the Rylagh Road area of Omagh on Saturday. 'As fire officers extinguished the blaze they discovered that, tragically, a person had died as a result of the fire. 'We are treating this fire as arson, and our inquiries as to how the person came to be beside the vehicle are ongoing. Advertisement 'We would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area between midday and 2:15pm on Saturday, who may have noticed anything suspicious, to contact us. We would be particularly keen to hear from anyone who had dashcam or other footage and would also like to hear from anyone who may have noticed this particular vehicle. 'The number to call is 101, quoting reference 982 02/08/25.' SDLP West Tyrone MLA Daniel McCrossan said it was a 'deeply disturbing incident that has shocked the local community'. He added: 'My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the person who has so tragically lost their life. 'It is heart-breaking that someone has died in such harrowing circumstances. People in the area are understandably anxious and looking for answers. 'It is critical that anyone with information – no matter how small – reports it to the PSNI. The victim's family deserves truth and justice. I will be following developments closely and supporting efforts to ensure a full investigation.' Mr McCrossan also commended the swift response of emergency services and reiterated the need for calm and co-operation as the investigation continues.

Police said officers were called to a bus stop in Kaiwaka, a small town in the north of the country, on Sunday after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment. "The driver became concerned when he noticed the bag moving. When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl," New Zealand Police said a statement. The woman, 27, has been arrested and charged with ill-treatment/neglect of a child. "The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed," police said. She has been taken to hospital, where she is undergoing medical assessment, they added. The relationship between the woman and the child has not been disclosed. The woman is due to appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday. "We would like to acknowledge and commend the bus driver, who noticed something wasn't right and took immediate action, preventing what could have been a far worse outcome," police said.

TWO men have been charged after a girl, 12, was allegedly kidnapped, raped and strangled. Ahmad Mulakhil, 23, is accused of raping of the underage girl in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, on July 22. 2 2 A second man, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, has been charged with aiding and abetting rape, as well as strangulation and kidnap of the girl. News of the horror attack has sparked outrage in the local community. Many residents have demanded more answers from Warwickshire Police regarding the defendants. But a spokesperson for the force said: "Once someone is charged with an offence, we follow national guidance. "This guidance does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status." They added: "We work to hold offenders to account and will always do everything in our power to present a robust case to the courts and protect the integrity of court proceedings." Mulakhil is charged with raping the victim in the Cheverel Street of Nuneaton. The assault allegedly unfolded between 8.30pm and 9.45pm on Tuesday, July 22. CCTV footage from a nearby doorbell camera appeared to show a man walking with the girl at around 8pm. Cops detained the suspect on Saturday 26, and he was charged the following day. He appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody. Mohammad Kabir, 23, was arrested in Nuneaton on July 31, and charged with kidnap, strangulation and aiding and abetting rape of a girl under 13. He appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court yesterday and was also remanded in custody. Both defendants will next appear at Warwick Crown Court on 26 August. In their full statement, Warwickshire Police said: "There's been some questions about what we do and don't release as part of a high-profile investigation such as this. "Following the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton on Tuesday 22 July we started an immediate and fast-moving investigation." The spokesperson added: "When something significant happens, we brief these partners and local elected officials on the circumstances of the crime, the investigation, the work being undertaken to arrest those responsible and how local people and partners can help a concerned community. "Where relevant, sensitive information around locations, details of the crime and policing activity to catch offenders can be shared, with a warning that this is sensitive or confidential information and disclosure by those being briefed could affect future court hearings.
