Brit slapped with highest Wimbledon fine after outburst as 12 players sanctioned
Doubles player Henry Patten has been stung with the biggest fine as Wimbledon announced sanctions against 12 players. Wimbledon officials have released a list of misdemeanours after the first week of the Grand Slam, naming and shaming those who have overstepped the line.
Patten tops the list, having been fined $12,500 (£9,180) for verbally abusing staff who tried to cut short his practice session. Patten is into the last 16 of the men's doubles at the All England Club and will play alongside Finland's Harri Heliövaara against the pairing of France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Australia 's Jordan Thompson on Monday.
Patten and Heliövaara, who won the men's doubles title at Wimbledon last year, have earned £43,750 between them in prize money so far. That figure will increase to £87,500 if they progress on Monday, but Patten has already forfeited a significant chunk of that through his behaviour.
His fine comes in ahead of the $6,000 (£4,400) fine handed out to Adrian Mannarino for unsportsmanlike conduct in his second-round clash with Valentin Royer. Mannarino came through qualifying to reach the third round at Wimbledon, earning £152,000, before losing to Andrey Rublev.
Elena Pridankina has been fined $5,000 (£3,672) for unsportsmanlike conduct during her first-round doubles defeat by Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei.
There are four players who have been docked $4,000 (£2,938): Zizou Bergs and Halley Baptiste have been punished for an audible obscenity, Varvara Gracheva for an abuse of rackets or equipment and Anna Kalinskaya for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jule Niemeier has been fined $2,500 (£1,835) for unsportsmanlike conduct in qualifying, while Alex Bolt, Chloe Paquet, Colton Smith and Luca Van Assche have all surrendered $2,000 (£1,468) for a variety of misdemeanours.
That means Wimbledon has taken away $50,000 (£36,715) in total from 12 players, but the fines pale in comparison to those self-stylised bad boy of tennis Nick Kyrgios has racked up during his career.
'Look, I probably would have, in my entire career, man I've been hit with some big ones,' Kyrgios said a few years ago 'I would say, I'd be approaching around 800 grand (Australian dollars) I reckon.' That totals over £400,000.
Back in 2019, the Australian was fined £90,000 and slapped with a suspended 16-week ban from the ATP Tour after committing eight offences during a match with Karen Khachanov at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
He has a long disciplinary history at Wimbledon, too, where he has fallen foul of the famous all-white dress code. Kyrgios was fined £11,700 in 2022 – the year he reached the final – for wearing eye-catching trainers.
"I wore a red Jordan hat and red Jordans just walking out there," Kyrgios said. "Predominantly, you have to wear all white. I got fined about $16,000 for wearing a red hat and then my red Jordans."

The German tennis star, ranked third in the world, was expected to breeze past world No. 72 Arthur Rinderknech when they faced off in the first round at SW19 in late June. But Zverev was left stunned in a shocking five-set defeat. Despite being in top form on grass until that match, the 28-year-old suffered a 7-6(3) 6-7 6-3 6-7 6-4 loss. Zverev has since spoken about the mental toll the loss took on him, leading to the worst period of his career and prompting him to take a four-week hiatus from competitive tennis. He made his comeback at the Toronto Open, reaching the semi-finals before losing to Karen Khachanov on Wednesday. It was only after a training camp with Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal, that he managed to get back on the right track. Zverev has now opened up about the 10 days he spent in Mallorca, where he had lengthy discussions with the pair while picking their brains, sometimes into the early hours of the morning. Zverev said at his press conference: 'It was amazing. I spent about 10 days there, worked really hard and enjoyed it as well. I think Toni enjoyed it as well. I'm trying to convince him to do more weeks with me; we'll see how it goes, but he's a very busy man.' The tennis star opened up on how he ended up at Nadal's renowned academy centre, saying: 'Uncle Toni contacted me after Wimbledon. I was very thankful for that. "We spoke on the phone for about an hour and a half, exchanged some messages, and then I decided to go to Mallorca to see him. 'He's a great coach, no doubt, but he's also someone who can give you a lot of confidence because when he speaks – and when Rafa speaks – you listen. They spent many hours talking to me and gave me a great perspective.' He continued: 'Rafa gave me a great perspective on what it's really like to play against me because he saw me as a player and now has seen me as a spectator. It was very helpful. 'Again, we spent hours and hours talking, sometimes until after midnight, at dinners and things like that. So it was great to be there.' Nadal and Zverev are former rivals, with the Spaniard boasting a 7-4 record over the German in head-to-heads before his retirement. Despite that respectable record, Zeverev has still not won a Grand Slam. He has reached three finals, with his latest attempt ending in defeat to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open earlier this year.

A teenage British tourist was arrested after he allegedly tried to force himself into a 22-year-old Brit's hotel room and rape her in Tenerife's Playa de Las Americas resort A 16-year-old British tourist has been arrested after he allegedly tried to rape another UK holidaymaker in her hotel at a major holiday hotspot. The teenager supposedly attempted to enter the 22-year-old's room - who was staying at a resort next to the man in Tenerife - and tried to force himself on her by the room's door. The 16-year-old, who had flown to the island with his family, was held at the swimming pool of his hotel in the Playa de Las Americas resort. Detectives in Spain said the shock incident happened in "busy daylight hours" on July 31, in the Spanish tourist hotspot. Police said the teen fled the 22-year-old's hotel room after she resisted him and screamed over the alleged attack. They added that CCTV footage was used to track the alleged attacker down at the next-door resort. He has been remanded to a juvenile detention centre following an appearance at a youth court and banned from leaving Spain pending an ongoing investigation. A spokesman for Spain's National Police in Tenerife said today: "Officers have arrested a minor aged 16 as the alleged author of an attempted sex attack on July 31 at a hotel in the municipality of Arona. The quick work of officers led to his rapid location and arrest, preventing the possibility of further attacks. "The incident occurred at the door of one of the rooms of the hotel where the victim, aged 22, was approached by an individual who managed to sneak in behind her. "She resisted, screaming to raise the alarm, and managing to prevent the attacker from closing the door behind him who reacted by fleeing the scene. The attack happened in busy daylight hours in a busy part of the hotel. "CCTV cameras enabled the officers to reconstruct the events of that day and follow the suspect's movements so they could locate and arrest him at the pool of a nearby hotel. He was a guest there and on holiday with his family. "The youngster was handed over to a youth court judge. Given the severity of the allegations against him, he was remanded to a youth detention centre where he will remain in custody, without being afforded the possibility of leaving the island." A well-placed police source said: "Both the teenage boy and the woman are British. She was holidaying alone and he was with his family." He said the incident happened around 3pm on July 31. Another added: "The CCTV images police obtained showed this lad appeared to be on the prowl after entering a hotel he wasn't staying at. He didn't know the older woman. She was a complete stranger." The names of the hotels, which are next-door to each other on Avenida de Las Americas, have not been disclosed.
