Slot's new-look Liverpool under the spotlight in Community Shield
Liverpool boss Arne Slot is relishing the rare chance to lift silverware in his side's first game of the season as the new-look Premier League champions face Crystal Palace in Sunday's Community Shield. Despite storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title last season with four games to spare, the Reds have splashed out, spending nearly £300 million ($402 million) in the transfer market. New forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, plus full-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong could get their first chance to impress the Liverpool fans at Wembley. The traditional curtain-raiser to the English football season sees the winners of the previous season's Premier League and FA Cup face off. "Normally you have to play numerous games before you can win something," Slot said at his pre-match press conference. "Now we have a chance to win something in the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, we face a very good Crystal Palace that have been very difficult to win against for us. "They showed in the last (FA Cup) final – and even in the semi-final, by the way, as well – how difficult it is to win a one-off game against them." Palace are appearing in the fixture for the first time after lifting their maiden major trophy by shocking Manchester City 1-0 in May to win the FA Cup. The Eagles' joy has been slightly soured since as they were thrown out of the Europa League and demoted into the Conference League -- the third tier of European competition -- over a breach of multi-club ownership rules. US businessman John Textor owned a stake in Palace and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League. Despite Textor since selling his shares to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, UEFA deemed Palace failed to meet the deadline to avoid a breach. Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season. Palace, however, have appealed to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. - Guehi, Eze to start - By contrast to Liverpool's transfer bonanza, Palace have spent just £2 million on Croatian left-back Borna Sosa and a new reserve goalkeeper in Walter Benitez. But the south London club have so far managed to keep hold of all of their prized assets despite interest from English and European giants. Liverpool themselves are keen on Palace captain Marc Guehi, while Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed both players will start at Wembley and believes his side can aim much higher up the table this season after a slow start last year cost them a top-half finish. "We've started on a completely different level, with a different mindset and different standard we set last year, and this is why we can look forward to the season in a very positive way," said Glasner. Tributes will be paid before the match to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward who died in a car crash last month at the age of 28. A "Forever 20" emblem, referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number, will be printed on Liverpool's shirts this season. "Tragedy impacted us but it impacted far more his wife, children and parents," added Slot. "The tributes that have been done since were all very emotional and impressive." kca/jdg/nr

Chelsea: Enzo Maresca 'prioritising' defensive reinforcements with Levi Colwill set to miss months
Enzo Maresca said he is prioritising signing a new defender after Levi Colwill underwent surgery on an ACL injury this week. Colwill played a key role for the Blues last season and at the Club World Cup, but is now set to miss most of next season after he was injured in training this week. Chelsea have already spent in excess of £200million on new players this summer, but Maresca said Chelsea will likely dip back into the market as he looks to bolster his backline in Colwill's absence. 'It is a priority for me,' he told Channel 5. 'Levi is a fantastic player. What we achieved last season is because of him. He played a lot of games with me, I love him. We are going to miss him. 'We are trying also to find different solutions.' He was speaking after returning to Stamford Bridge for the first of Chelsea's two pre-season friendlies, in which the Blues produced a comfortable 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen despite only returning from a summer break on Monday. Maresca said he was pleased with Chelsea's showing: '[I am] very happy with the performance, especially after just four days training. It is good to start again.' Brazilian starlet Estevao joined Joao Pedro on the scoresheet, producing an assured debut as he laid claim to a starting role come the start of the Premier League season. Of the player, Maresca said: 'He is very young, very, very young. He needs to adapt, he needs to play. I said yesterday he is going to help because he is a fantastic player.' Playing time may be hard to come by, though, as Chelsea have added a glut of attacking talent to their squad. Maresca admitted he would not be able to keep them all content as they fight for minutes on the pitch. 'Not all of them will be happy always, because if they don't play, they are not happy. 'They have to understand they are all good, 22, 23, 24 players, and they have to understand there will be many rotations.'

Luka Doncic's Luka Magic already in full effect
The post Luka Doncic's Luka Magic already in full effect appeared first on ClutchPoints. Luka Doncic has been the talk of the town for the past few weeks, as everyone has been impressed with his new physique. Not only that, but he just signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, making him a key part of the franchise for years to come. Next on Doncic's list for the offseason is competing in the Eurobasket Tournament with his national team, and he's already showing off moves that are making everyone remember why they call him Luka Magic. In one of the plays, he's seen getting fouled, but he used one hand to still put the ball in the rim. In another move, he uses a eurostep to try to get past his defender, and with contact, he once again threw up a one-handed shot to make the basket. Doncic is true to this, not new to this, and this is stuff that he's been known for doing throughout his entire career. At this point, it's not surprising that some of the things that he's able to do. Doncic might be one of the best players in the tournament, and he could lead Slovenia all the way to the end. Luka Doncic ready for new year with Lakers When the Lakers acquired Doncic in a trade last season, it was evident that he was being set up to be the future of the franchise. The Lakers made sure to lock that in, signing him to a three-year, $165 million contract extension. During the press conference, Doncic went down the line of thanking everyone in the organization for believing in him 'I just want to say thank you,' Doncic said. 'You guys welcomed me with open arms. Thank you, Mark (Walter), thank you, Jeanie (Buss), JJ (Redick), Rob, and the whole organization. Honestly, I can't wait to get started.' It had been a journey for Doncic, as he was surprisingly traded by the Dallas Mavericks, a team where it seemed he would be for the rest of his career. Many rumors came out about Doncic and why the Mavericks decided to trade him, with one of them being because of conditioning concerns. Since then, Doncic has had a body transformation, and he looks slimmer than he has in years past. If he can keep this conditioning going into the season with the Lakers, it may reduce his chances of getting injured while also elevating his play.
