Hero dad held onto wife's hand as he died trying to save twins stuck in sea

Daily Mirror27-05-2025

Alexandru Melei, 60, waded into the sea at Ingoldmells, Lincolnshire, after hearing two children scream for help - but was overwhelmed by the swell and died soon after
The daughter of a hero holidaymaker who died as he tried to rescue two twin girls from drowning at sea today told how his wife held his hand as his life ebbed away.
Ana-Maria Barbu, 36, revealed her father, Alexandru Melei, 60, had been in the UK visiting friends when he died trying to reach the stricken girls who were in distress at sea. Ana-Maria told how he heard the youngsters' screams for help and raced into the water - but was overwhelmed by the swell close to the Promenade in Ingoldmells, near Skegness, Lincs.

And she has now launched a mercy mission to have his body repatriated back to his native Romania so they can lay him to rest. Speaking from her home in Bucharest, Ana-Maria said: "My mother and father were walking along the seashore when they heard the girls screaming, they were in distress.

"The girls lived near my father's friends, so they knew them. From what I understand they had gone in the water together but had become separated when the water rose quickly. They were starting to panic, they were screaming and yelling for help. My father jumped in to try to save one of them and his friend went to the other.
"His friend managed to get the other girl out, but they were exhausted and they could see my dad was struggling. They had to do CPR on my father, my mum was there with him and was holding his hand the entire time. They couldn't do anything to save him." Alexandru and his wife of 38 years, Cornelia, 57, had arrived in the UK on Friday and were staying with Romanian friends in the popular tourist hotspot.
But a huge rescue mission was launched at around 4pm on Sunday after ex-Army medic Alexandru entered the sea close to the Promenade in Ingoldmells, near Skegness, Lincolnshire, in the Bank Holiday tragedy. Eyewitnesses revealed how an air ambulance was deployed while police and coastguards fought to save the man's life as horrified beachgoers watched on. However despite desperate efforts to revive him, it's understood he died in hospital.
The children - who emerged unscathed from the incident - were left "in terrible shock and wrapped in blankets" after the incident, according to people watching nearby. In an exclusive interview, Ana-Maria praised her father's bravery and courage. She said: "I'm so proud of him, he was so brave. This is who he was, he was a medical assistant in the Romanian military for half his life, then was a medical assistant in the hospital."

Alexandru and Cornelia, who also have a son, 33, had just retired and began travelling the world. Ana-Maria said: "They were just starting to travel the world, my mum had been through chemotherapy last year and was in recovery, they were just starting to enjoy life and have fun. We are devastated."
Ana-Maria said: "We have been sent so many kind messages. People wanted me to set up a GoFundMe page so they could help bring his body home and also help my mother. People have been so kind."

The RNLI confirmed it had launched the Skegness lifeboat during the incident. The coastguard and air ambulance were also in attendance. In a statement, Lincolnshire Police said: 'A 60-year-old man has sadly died after entering the water to help two children who appeared to be in distress. The man reportedly entered the sea just after 4pm close to the Promenade in Ingoldmells, he got into difficulty and sadly died at the scene. Our thoughts are with the man's family and loved ones at this very sad time. '
No lifeguards are stationed on the deserted beach where the tragedy happened despite a long history of drownings. On the prom which overlooks the beach where the children were playing there is a sign with the number of the RNLI to ring in the event of emergency.
A loud karaoke stage was blasting out music when the tragedy began to unfold which may have muffled what was happening to the crowds of visitors gathered around the large beachfront bar - Bibby's - and surrounding food and drink stalls. One local said: 'They turned off the karaoke as soon as someone realised something was wrong. But maybe it was too late by then.'

Shocked families packing the seafront prom left in droves as news spread the treacherous waters had claimed another victim. There were floral tributes to others pinned to railings near the scene and hundreds more along the prom - many in memory of those who had died in similar tragedies.
Seafront trader Liarna Holmes said: 'Lot of people don't know about the dangers. We need lifeguards here. They have got them down in Skegness. But I have heard they were not out in Skegness yesterday either. There used to be lifeguards here and we should have them. There is an accident every year.
'There are flowers all along the prom in memory of those who have lost their lives to the sea. I have been down here six years and three seasons working on the beach. People don't realise when the yellow flag is flying there is an offshore wind that takes you straight out. Then you have the currents and riptides. It is quite a drop down and when the tide comes in and people don't realise how quickly it drops away.'

Greg Monks' family say they believe he 'got lost' in Portugal

Greg Monks was reported missing after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve region during the early hours of May 28. The 38-year-old had arrived in the resort town the day before for a stag do. The last official sighting of Greg was at around 3.27am on May 28 as he walked past a property in Cerro de Aguia. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minutes walk from the main strip. Police launched a major search to trace Greg, but on June 4, officers confirmed the body of a man, a 38-year-old British citizen, had been discovered on vacant land in Cerro de Aguia. Greg's mum, girlfriend, and cousin – who had flown out to join the search - will return to Scotland today (June 9) without him, with the repatriation process 'set to take days', the Daily Record reports. Jillian Monks, Greg's sister, stated that the family 'will never truly know the full story' but that they believe he 'got lost'. READ NEXT: £25k raised to bring Greg Monks home from Portugal She said: 'We don't believe that anything untoward happened. Everything the police have told us adds up. 'We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. 'It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg had all his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet. 'He had all his cards and cash.' We previously reported that a GoFundMe page was initially launched to support the search but had instead been updated to help the family bring Greg home and to plan his funeral. It has so far raised £34,000. Ms Monks highlighted that the family now 'has some sense of closure' as they plan to bring her beloved brother home this weekend. READ NEXT: Family pay tribute to Cole Cooper as body found in search She added: 'The generosity and support have been incredible. We're hoping to bring Greg home by the weekend. His mum, girlfriend, and cousin are going to fly home tonight. 'They wanted to fly back with him, but it has just not been possible. It has been the toughest time of our lives. 'We still can't believe this has happened, but we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. 'I think it just shows in places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. 'His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Ms Monks further shared her family's anger over how they discovered Greg had died. She commented: 'I knew Greg had been found before my mum and dad were told officially by police in Portugal. 'They were waiting in a police station to meet with officers when their phones went off with notifications to say Greg had been found. 'It is shocking that this was allowed to happen.'

Buchan, of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, called herself Jessica Jackrabbit on OnlyFans, a site where users pay a monthly subscription to access explicit content. She described herself as a "good teacher gone bad" with a "sexy tight body". Buchan advertised her OnlyFans account through Instagram, which pupils spotted, and previously claimed to have made £60,000 in just one month through the adult site. She was previously warned by her headteacher about her "poor judgment" on social media. And the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GCTS) has taken action by striking her off the teaching register. The regulation body found that Buchan had failed to conceal her identity and profession. It also concluded that her behaviour lacked integrity, as reported by the BBC. Gary Burton, solicitor and presenting officer for the GTCS, said the mum-of-one had "used her profession as a selling tool". He added that Buchan appeared to have backed up her OnlyFans work in media interviews and that Bannerman High was "now synonymous with having an OnlyFans teacher". Hundreds of pupils cheered on a teacher about to undergo lifesaving brain surgery - by rocking out to ACDC'S Thunderstruck She resigned from her position at the school in December 2022 after complaints were made. Buchan declined to appear or give evidence at the GTCS hearing. Bannerman High headteacher, Seonaidh Black, said Buchan was a "bubbly and enthusiastic" person who "wanted to do a good job". But she added that on a "couple of occasions", Buchan was unclear on boundaries with pupils concerning her social media profiles being "open where pupils could access them". Ms Black said that a colleague told her images of Buchan's OnlyFans profile were seen by S5 and S6 pupils. Senior schoolboys asked Ms Black if she had "heard the news?" and that she should "look out for Jessica Jackrabbit". Ms Black added that it was "obvious everyone knew what was going on". She tried to contact Buchan after talks with HR, but couldn't reach her. Buchan's OnlyFans profile was discovered just days before teachers went on strike over pupil behaviour. Ms Black said Buchan's activity online and the walkouts have had a "huge impact" on the school. Following a probe, Glasgow City Council said: "The council has a code of conduct that all employees should adhere to and a teacher who has actively pursued a second income on this type of website brings their school, the council and their profession into disrepute." The GTCS has been contacted for comment.

Heartbreaking tributes paid to 'beautiful soul' after teenager stabbed to death

Ibrahima Seck, 14, was rushed to hospital but tragically died from his injuries on Sunday evening. Heartbreaking tributes have been paid to a "beautiful soul" who was stabbed to death outside a pub. Ibrahima Seck, 14, was rushed to hospital but tragically died from his injuries on Sunday evening. He was stabbed outside the Fairway Inn in New Moston, north Manchester, before running to nearby Nevin Road, where neighbours rushed to his aid. ‌ As reported by the Manchester Evening News, police closed off the scene and remained in attendance outside the pub on Monday. A property on nearby Warbeck Road has also been sealed off. ‌ A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Ibrahima's family by Dawn Frimpong. She wrote: "I had the honour of working with this young man, in a school, where he was very well loved. "He was a beautiful soul who had the most infectious smile and you couldn't help but laugh with him. He will be missed by so many. I am attempting to raise as much money as possible for Ibrahima's family so they are not worrying about financial burden at this very difficult time. "We must stand together as communities in times like this and offer support no matter how big or small. Any contribution would be very greatly received." Miss Whittaker told the M.E.N. she taught Ibrahima at Manchester Community Primary Academy for two years. "Ibrahima was the most beautiful boy," she said. "He touched my soul and he had such a beautiful heart. I'm devastated beyond words." A neighbour of Ibrahima's, who did not want to be named, told our sister title that he was the youngest of three siblings. She said: 'He was so young, it's so very, very sad. I cannot understand what this country is coming to.' ‌ The woman said the family had lived on her street, a short distance from the Fairway Inn, for a 'couple of years' and she spoke to Ibrahima's parents as neighbours. 'I heard about it last night' she added. 'I heard the helicopter last night then I read about it on the news. Then a police car pulled up and they went inside. That's when we knew. "Another neighbour who knows the family very well said it was the youngest one. I felt sick. So very, very sick. I just couldn't believe that had happened to a family like that. It's so sad, bless them. There's not much we can, just offer our condolences and be there if they need anything.' ‌ Tributes have also been left at the scene where Ibrahima was attacked, alongside flowers and messages of support for his family. One note said: "From one mother to another, I know there are no words that can ever ease your pain. "But I pray God gives you the strength to face each new day. Please know that as a community we hold your family in our hearts." Another said: "Things need to change! Knives down, gloves up! Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this horrific time. There are good people in this city! We pray for your son." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
