Four bills to be tabled at State Assembly sitting
KOTA KINABALU (July 2): Four bills will be tabled during the two-day State Assembly sitting, beginning next Monday.
The Chief Minister's Department will table two bills: the Forestry (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Climate and Carbon Governance Bill 2025.
The other two will be tabled by the Finance Ministry — the State Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Supplementary Supply Bill 2025.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor disclosed this at the Chief Minister's Department post-cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday.
The State Assembly sitting is expected to be the last before the assembly is dissolved to make way for the next state election. The current term expires in October.
Meanwhile, Hajiji hoped public service personnel will continue to uphold the principles of professionalism, neutrality and integrity in carrying out their duties during this election year.
'We are facing the state elections this year. As the backbone of the State Government administration, civil servants must ensure that all administrative affairs and service delivery to the people are not disrupted and continue to run smoothly as usual.
'The efficiency and transparency of civil servants in facing this challenging period will reflect our commitment to continue supporting the democratic system and stability of the state administration,' he said at the meeting.
Hajiji also urged all department heads to demonstrate strong commitment in carrying out their responsibilities. He said they must carry out their duties with greater efficiency and accuracy, as well as monitor projects more effectively to ensure all approved projects are completed within schedule.
'This is crucial to avoid having to deal with delays in execution, wastage of resources and jeopardising reputation and public trust in the capabilities of the government's administrative machinery,' he said.
The Chief Minister also reminded all public service personnel to always be responsive, proactive and to practise good governance in carrying out their duties in order to provide the best services to the people.
'Civil servants must carry out their responsibilities with trust, transparency and a strong sense of accountability. They must avoid conflicts of interest so that the state government's goals and objectives can be successfully achieved.
'The interest of the government is always more important than personal interest,' he said.
Hajiji also reminded civil servants to always uphold personal integrity and make it a core value in their character.
'Without high personal integrity, the consequences to the image of the public service and the entire state government institution would be severe,' he said.

PETALING JAYA : Former finance minister Lim Guan Eng has filed a defamation suit against Tajuddin Abdul Rahman over the former Umno Supreme Council member's remarks accusing him of turning the finance ministry into a 'Chinese temple' during his tenure. In the suit filed today, three years after the alleged defamatory statement was made, Lim is seeking a retraction of the impugned remarks and a public apology to be published on Tajuddin's social media accounts, as well as in newspapers and online media outlets. The former Penang chief minister is also seeking damages and an injunction to prevent the former Pasir Salak MP from republishing any similar defamatory statements about him. In the statement of claim filed by his solicitors, Messrs Guok Partnership, at the High Court registry this afternoon, Lim said that on Oct 18, 2022, Tajuddin took part in a forum organised by Sinar Harian, where the discussion focused on the 15th general election. Lim, who is now the DAP adviser, said Tajuddin accused him of sidelining the Malays during his tenure as minister, further alleging that he had 'turned the ministry into a Chinese temple'. He added that the allegedly defamatory statements were widely circulated on social media, online news portals, and traditional media. Claiming the statement was a calculated move, Lim said Tajuddin had implied that he carried out his ministerial duties recklessly and was unfit to hold public office. He said it also gave the impression that he abused his position and power by purportedly dismissing Malay civil servants from the ministry during the Pakatan Harapan administration between May 2018 and February 2020. He said Tajuddin's remark also created the false impression that he had decorated or transformed the ministry into a Chinese temple. He contended that the publication of these statements had seriously damaged his reputation as a respected politician, including his standing as a former chairman and former secretary-general of DAP. On Oct 27, 2022, Lim had threatened to sue Tajuddin over the matter and said that the details of the suit would be revealed by his lawyers.

US says all 55 million visas fair game for review
WASHINGTON: All 55 million foreigners who hold visas for the United States are subject to continuous review, the State Department warned Thursday as President Donald Trump ramps up his crackdown on visas and immigration. 'The Department's continuous vetting includes all of the more than 55 million foreigners who currently hold valid US visas,' a State Department official said. 'The State Department revokes visas any time there are indications of a potential ineligibility, which includes things like any indicators of overstays, criminal activity, threats to public safety, engaging in any form of terrorist activity or providing support to a terrorist organization.' The official did not say that all 55 million visas were under active review, but made clear that the Trump administration considered all of them fair game. The official, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said that the Trump administration was stepping up scrutiny in particular for students. 'We're reviewing all student visas,' the official said, saying the State Department was 'constantly monitoring what people have said' on social media, which visa applicants are now required to show. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has proudly targeted anti-Israel protesters, using an obscure law that allows him to rescind visas for people deemed to counter US foreign policy interests. The State Department earlier said it has revoked 6,000 visas since Rubio took office in January with Trump. It marks four times as many student visas as president Joe Biden's administration revoked in the same period the previous year, according to the State Department. Rubio has argued that the administration has the right to issue and revoke visas without judicial review and that non-US citizens do not enjoy the US constitutional right to free speech. But the administration has faced setbacks in two of the highest-profile cases. Record RM1.3 billion for education: Chief Minister

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the DSP Haji Hajiji Hall and the retirement celebration of the headmaster of SK Bundung on Thursday, Hajiji revealed that under his leadership, the state government has allocated RM1.3 billion for education, the largest such investment in Sabah's history. Advertisement 'Education has always been close to my heart and my personal experiences shaped my determination to make it a top priority. He recalled his own struggles as a student, sharing how his late mother had to borrow RM15 to pay for his examination fees. 'That memory has never left me, it is why I introduced assistance programmes for students today. I do not want any child in Sabah to be left behind simply because their parents cannot afford the fees,' he said. According to Hajiji, the government had significantly expanded scholarships, raising the allocation from RM50 million in previous years to RM138 million this year alone, with plans to add another RM200 million in the near future. 'Thousands of Form 5 and Form 6 students now receive RM200 each before sitting for their exams, while more than 10,000 Sabahan students at universities across the country have received RM300 allowances to travel home for festive holidays. 'These measures are designed to ease the burden on families, especially those from low-income backgrounds. They reflect our belief that education is the foundation of success and the key to Sabah's future prosperity,' he said. Beyond education, Hajiji highlighted that the state government is also providing monthly cash assistance of RM300 to 100,000 hardcore poor households, the largest welfare outreach ever undertaken in Sabah. In addition, the Welfare Department has expanded its registry by 40,000 new names, ensuring that more families in need are reached. 'We understand the challenges of rising living costs and we want to make sure no family is left behind. This government is serious about addressing poverty,' he stressed. On the economic front, Hajiji said Sabah has successfully secured major investments that are expected to transform the state's economy. These include RM19 billion from Singapore, as well as significant projects in the oil and gas sector through collaborations with Petronas. He argued that these investments reflect the confidence international and local investors have in Sabah's pro-investment policies. 'In the past, Sabahans had to leave for Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru or even Singapore to find work. Now, we are bringing investments here so that opportunities are created at home,' he said. Hajiji dismissed criticism from the opposition that his administration has failed, calling such claims untrue and unfair. 'The facts clearly show that the current government has done more for education, welfare, and economic development than any previous administration. 'The opposition can say what they want, but when they were in power, what did they actually do? Compare their record with what we have achieved today. The difference is clear,' he said. Hajiji concluded that the government's focus on education, welfare, and investment will remain the pillars of Sabah's progress. 'Our goal has always been to build a stronger, fairer Sabah.
