Tuaran: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor underscored education, welfare, and economic growth as the cornerstones of his administration, pointing to record-breaking allocations that he says prove the government's commitment to improving the lives of Sabahans. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the DSP Haji Hajiji Hall and the retirement celebration of the headmaster of SK Bundung on Thursday, Hajiji revealed that under his leadership, the state government has allocated RM1.3 billion for education, the largest such investment in Sabah's history.
Advertisement 'Education has always been close to my heart and my personal experiences shaped my determination to make it a top priority. He recalled his own struggles as a student, sharing how his late mother had to borrow RM15 to pay for his examination fees. 'That memory has never left me, it is why I introduced assistance programmes for students today. I do not want any child in Sabah to be left behind simply because their parents cannot afford the fees,' he said. According to Hajiji, the government had significantly expanded scholarships, raising the allocation from RM50 million in previous years to RM138 million this year alone, with plans to add another RM200 million in the near future. 'Thousands of Form 5 and Form 6 students now receive RM200 each before sitting for their exams, while more than 10,000 Sabahan students at universities across the country have received RM300 allowances to travel home for festive holidays. 'These measures are designed to ease the burden on families, especially those from low-income backgrounds. They reflect our belief that education is the foundation of success and the key to Sabah's future prosperity,' he said. Beyond education, Hajiji highlighted that the state government is also providing monthly cash assistance of RM300 to 100,000 hardcore poor households, the largest welfare outreach ever undertaken in Sabah. In addition, the Welfare Department has expanded its registry by 40,000 new names, ensuring that more families in need are reached. 'We understand the challenges of rising living costs and we want to make sure no family is left behind. This government is serious about addressing poverty,' he stressed. On the economic front, Hajiji said Sabah has successfully secured major investments that are expected to transform the state's economy. These include RM19 billion from Singapore, as well as significant projects in the oil and gas sector through collaborations with Petronas. He argued that these investments reflect the confidence international and local investors have in Sabah's pro-investment policies. 'In the past, Sabahans had to leave for Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru or even Singapore to find work. Now, we are bringing investments here so that opportunities are created at home,' he said. Hajiji dismissed criticism from the opposition that his administration has failed, calling such claims untrue and unfair. 'The facts clearly show that the current government has done more for education, welfare, and economic development than any previous administration. 'The opposition can say what they want, but when they were in power, what did they actually do? Compare their record with what we have achieved today. The difference is clear,' he said. Hajiji concluded that the government's focus on education, welfare, and investment will remain the pillars of Sabah's progress. 'Our goal has always been to build a stronger, fairer Sabah. These achievements are not about me personally, but about what we can do together for the people,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MP calls for vital Serikin ICQS Complex project to be expedited, upgrades for Biawak ICQS
Mordi (second left) is seen during a working visit to Biawak ICQS last year. KUCHING (Aug 22): The Serikin Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex project must be expedited as it is crucial to strengthen cross-border management and boost economic activities between Sarawak and Kalimantan, said Mas Gading MP Mordi Bimol. He said the RM50 million project, which is at the tender evaluation stage and is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026, should not face unnecessary delays given its importance. 'As the legal entry point from Kalimantan, Indonesia into Bau, the ICQS Serikin is critical not only for strengthening immigration control, but also to stimulate legitimate cross-border economic development,' he said in a statement today. He also called for upgrades at the Biawak ICQS Complex, which he noted was increasingly unable to meet current operational needs. According to him, the existing facilities at Biawak ICQS must be upgraded to be on par with modern security requirements. 'Border security is not only about sovereignty, but also closely linked to the economy. Well-controlled borders will reduce losses from smuggling and open up legitimate trade opportunities, attract investment, and ensure the well-being of the people,' he stressed. On a related matter, he welcomed Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's announcement that Raso 1 in Lundu and Stass in Bau, will be among the seven new border security posts to be built in Sarawak. In his winding up speech on the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, Saifuddin announced an allocation of RM28 million has been approved to develop these seven additional security posts. Mordi said this is a long-awaited development for the residents of Raso 1 and Stass, two villages near the border, who face the threat of smuggling of controlled and subsidised goods, as well as encroachment on customary rights land every year. 'I hope that these checkpoints can be expedited, manned with full-time security personnel, and equipped with modern monitoring systems such as drones, CCTV, and strategic communication centres,' he added. Sabah poll shows 32 per cent of voters remain undecided ahead of state election
KOTA KINABALU: A large bloc of undecided voters is set to shape the Sabah state election, a survey shows. Research firm Vodus found that 32 per cent of the electorate there remains undecided, with economy, living costs, job opportunities and healthcare cited as top concerns. According to Vodus Research founder Kelvin Goh, "there is a strong signal that evolving priorities and political leanings of the electorate and political parties banking on legacy support should be alert". However, the most striking finding is the 32 per cent of voters who remain undecided, making them the single largest segment after GRS supporters, Goh said. The statewide poll, conducted in June 2025 by Vodus proprietary OMTOS online survey platform, canvassed 536 registered voters across Sabah's diverse demographics. The research also revealed that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leads with 25 per cent of voter support. It is followed by Barisan Nasional (BN) at 13 per cent , Pakatan Harapan (PH) at 10 per cent, and Parti Warisan at 9 per cent. Goh added 66 per cent of Sabahans cited leadership qualities such as competence, integrity, and trustworthiness as the top criterion, followed by the candidate's background and economic policies. The survey also indicates party manifestos and political track records ranked lower in importance, suggesting that voters may be increasingly personality-driven rather than party-driven in their choices. "This trend is particularly strong among Indigenous Sabahans and Malay voters, groups where GRS currently enjoys strong support. "While GRS holds a commanding lead, the race remains highly fluid. Political parties aiming to secure victory will need more than just party branding. "They must present credible solutions on economic hardship, healthcare, and local governance," he said in the statement. The survey also highlighted several demographic gaps that could offer strategic openings. For instance, among first-time voters, BN performs better than other parties. On the other hand, it stated that PH would find its strongest support among voters under 35 but does not lead in any age group. On an ethnic basis, GRS is preferred by Malays (28 per cent) and Indigenous Sabahans (29 per cent). BN leads among Chinese voters (33 per cent), though its support is weaker among Indigenous groups. With an expected turnout of 80 per cent, including 8 per cent first-time voters, the Sabah state election could serve as an indicator for broader national trends, particularly the rise of issue-based voting and leadership centred preferences. "Sabah is known for its fluid political alignments and multi-ethnic electorate. The large undecided bloc could prove decisive come polling day. "As such, voter outreach and clarity on pressing issues will be crucial in the final stretch," he said in a statement. He added the survey also reveals rising cost of living, job opportunities and healthcare, and corruption concern voters. In contrast, state autonomy under Malaysian Agreement 1963 was rated least important, particularly among younger and less politically engaged voters.
