Mayer set to challenge Ben Sulayem for FIA presidency
The BBC reported American Tim Mayer, a former Formula One steward and son of former McLaren principal Teddy Mayer, would announce on Friday he was standing against the Emirati.
A press conference was called at a venue outside the Silverstone circuit ahead of British Grand Prix practice.
Mayer, 59, told the BBC last November that he had been fired via text message by an assistant to Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem, an Emirati, is scheduled to attend the race which marks the midpoint in the Formula One season. He has already announced he is seeking a second term.
The FIA is the governing body for F1, the world rally championship and Formula E among other series.

Joao Pedro arrival boosts Chelsea ahead of Palmeiras Club World Cup test
New signing Joao Pedro could make his debut for Chelsea when they renew acquaintances with Brazilian outfit Palmeiras in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup on Friday (July 4, 2025). The 23-year-old Brazilian forward completed a move to Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion for a reported £60 million ($79 million) on Wednesday and immediately began training with Enzo Maresca's squad in Miami. That is where they have been preparing for the last eight of the tournament in the United States, before travelling back to Philadelphia on Thursday ahead of the clash with Sao Paulo side Palmeiras. "I'm very excited to play for Chelsea, to fight for every title, every tournament and play in the Champions League. Grand Chess Tour: Gukesh in joint lead with Carlsen and Wesley So after day one
World champion D Gukesh came up with two straight victories to tie for the top spot alongside world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway, Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland and American Wesley So at the end of the first three rounds of the Super United Rapid and Blitz Chess tournament, a part of the Grand Chess Tour. Starting the day with a loss against Duda, Gukesh overpowered a reckless Alireza Firouzja of France before defeating compatriot R Praggnanandhaa to reach on four points out of a possible six. Carlsen beat Wesley So and drew his remaining two games against local star Ivan Saric and Duda to match Gukesh on points, while Wesley was the only other player involved in all decisive games, apart from Gukesh, as he put it across his US compatriot Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri of Holland. In-form Praggnanandhaa had a tough day in office as he drew with Firouzja and Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan with the loss against Gukesh costing him dearly. "Duda just got a nice position and played well," said Gukesh after the end of the day. Firouzja got a bit impatient against the Indian, while Praggnanandhaa simply blundered. Carlsen was held by Saric in a game played well by the Croatian, and his second-round victory was pretty much Carlsensque as he ground down Wesley in the endgame that lasted 75 moves.
