Nebraska coach Matt Rhule represented on CBS Sports' list of top head football coaches
Rhule and the program are looking for a bigger 2025 campaign after finishing last season 7-6. They won the Pinstripe Bowl, which was an achievement for the program, as they had not won a bowl game since 2016.
After finishing 5-7 in 2023 and 7-6 in 2024, the program looks to take a big leap, aided by freshmen and transfers on both sides of the football. Tom Fornelli broke down why he put Rhule in the 32nd spot.
"Rhule's Nebraska was able to cross a bowl game off the to-do list last year, but he still fell three spots in our rankings. After all, there's a difference between 6-6 bowl eligibility and 8-4, so you'll have to forgive some of our voters if they weren't overly impressed with Rhule's sophomore season in Lincoln."
Rhule is known for making third-year leaps in his previous stops at Temple and Baylor. Huskers could be poised to make the jump as well with a favorable schedule.

Sawyer Robertson and Baylor hope to build off 2024 finish that removed dismal feel around Dave Aranda's team
The feeling surrounding coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears was getting downright dismal midway through last season. A six-game winning streak certainly changed the mood, and expectations, especially for quarterback Sawyer Robertson and other players who went through that extended slide. 'A lot of the guys that are here right now, and that had roles in last year's successful season, were also on that 3-9 team (in 2023) when nobody liked us,' Robertson said. 'So just keeping that chip on our shoulder is the main thing, and building off of how we ended last season.' Some now even consider Baylor, 8-5 last season after a bowl loss to LSU, a dark-horse contender for another Big 12 title. Before winning its final six regular-season games last year, Baylor was in a 5-17 tailspin that went back to a four-game losing streak at the end of 2022. That was just a season after being Big 12 champions, winning the Sugar Bowl and ranking fifth in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll in Aranda's second year. 'It's good to have the momentum, but we've got to realize it's a new season, new team,' fifth-year receiver Josh Cameron said. 'There's always going to be different dynamics.' Runners and catchers Baylor has the only 1,000-yard rusher returning in the Big 12 from last season, and has back its top two receivers. Bryson Washington ran for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and caught 22 passes. Along with Dawson Pendergrass (671 yards, six TDs), that gives Baylor one of the league's top running back duos. Cameron, a former walk-on, had 52 catches for 754 yards and 10 TDs last year. He was also the FBS leader averaging 20.7 yards on punt returns. 'Just kind of treat myself and carry myself as like, 'Man, I'm a walk-on.' So I'm still trying to fight for that spot. I'm still trying to fight for what's mine,' he said. 'That's like the main thing that's really keeps me going.' The Bears got a big boost when the NCAA cleared former Texas State transfer Ashtyn Hawkins (45 catches, 567 yards, five TDs) for another season with Baylor. Sawyer's journey Robertson spent two seasons at Mississippi State before transferring to Baylor, where he made four starts as a sophomore before taking over full-time in the third game last season. Even while hampered by a lower-body injury the second half of last season, he threw for 3,071 yards and 28 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He added 230 yards and four TDs on the ground. Defensive focus While Jake Spavital goes into his second season as offensive coordinator, Aranda again will primarily focus on defense; he took the Baylor job after being the defensive coordinator for LSU's national title in 2019. The Bears ranked in the bottom half of the Big 12 last season in pretty much every defensive category. They allowed more than 30 points and 433 yards in conference games. 'I'm sure there is,' Aranda said when asked if there is pressure on the defense to take another step. 'When you win, you want to feel like you contributed to the win. So I think that kind of sums up that side of the ball.' Protecting up front Baylor returns four starters on the offensive line, a group with a lot of quality depth after that. 'It's the most depth of any team I've been a part of. ... There's dudes right behind them that are pushing them, trying to take that job,' Aranda said. 'I think their aggressiveness and their ability to communicate are the two things that separate them.' Power start Baylor will open the season against a team from another power conference for the first time since going to Wake Forest in 2009. The Bears host Auburn in a night opener Aug. 29, and a week later play at 16th-ranked team SMU, a playoff team last season in its first as an ACC member. Two of Baylor's first three Big 12 games are against defending champion No. 11 Arizona State and No. 17 Kansas State, though both are at home.

6 DAYS TO 2025 KICKOFF: Sterling Lockett
Goal No. 6: SELF-DISCIPLINE. Do it right; don't accept less. Position: Wide Receiver Previous College: None Projection: Second-String Status: On Scholarship Sterling Lockett (b. Oct. 8, 2003) is a shifty, smooth wide receiver with a famous name from Blue Valley High School who is majoring in business administration. He redshirted and did not play in 2022. Lockett played in two games in 2023, seeing time as a reserve wide receiver against Baylor and as a punt returner in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against NC State. Last season, he played in 12 games as both a reserve wide receiver — seeing time on 33 offensive snaps — and as a kick returner; returned one kickoff for 11 yards against Cincinnati and one punt for 10 yards in the season opener against UT Martin; and earned Academic All-Big 12 honors. Lockett looks to continue in both roles in 2025 and, for a guy who has yet to record a catch, continues to improve as a route runner, based on reports. For instance, here's last month's assessment from head coach Chris Klieman: We have to keep pushing Sterling Lockett so we can use Jayce (Brown) outside and inside, and Sterling can play the slot because Sterling has done a good job. We're trying to move more guys around, which sometimes will stunt their growth from a mental standpoint in having to learn multiple positions, but we probably need to do that so that if the fourth-best guy is only playing one position and someone else gets hurt, we have to be able to move him to another position to get the best players on the field. That has helped us there. His position coach, wide receivers coach Matthew Middleton, also sung Lockett's praises earlier this month: Sterling has been working his butt off. He's gotten better throughout the summer and in this camp. He's another one of those veteran guys who's been around and understands me and competes and does a really good job. We're really impressed with how he's competed day in, day out. Lockett prepped under head coach Allen Terrell at Blue Valley, where he was rated the 10th-best player in the state of Kansas by ESPN, and he was high school teammates with K-State linebacker Beau Palmer, running back JB Price and linebacker Maguire Richman. He hauled in 65 receptions for 1,018 yards and 10 touchdowns during his career, which included a five-touchdown campaign as a senior. Lockett picked up 2021 honorable mention all-state honors from Sports in Kansas after he averaged 22.8 yards per kickoff return for the Tigers over the final two years of his career. He selected K-State over interest (but no offers) from Arizona State, Iowa and Iowa State. Lockett's primary recruiters were K-State director of football recruiting Taylor Braet and former fullbacks, tight ends, and wide receivers coach Jason Ray. Sterling continues a proud family tradition of excellence: His father, Kevin (1993-96); uncle, Aaron (1998-2001); and brother, Tyler (2011-14), all were star wide receivers and return specialists for the Wildcats. They collectively averaged 15.2 yards every time they caught a football. In all, they produced 13,655 all-purpose yards. Tyler ranks first in career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, while Kevin ranks second in each category. Tyler previously played with the Seattle Seahawks and currently is a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans. (And then, of course, there are the upcoming twins, Jacob and Jordan. Nebraska football faces unique opponent in latest bowl projections
The college football season is almost upon us, and bowl projections are rolling out. ESPN released its list on Friday, and Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have the Huskers going to the SRS Distribution Bowl on December 31 to face the Utah Utes. This would be a unique matchup. The two teams have not faced each other since 1992, when the Huskers won by a 49-22 margin. All four matchups between the two programs have taken place in Lincoln, with the Huskers winning each of them. The first matchup came in 1968, when the Huskers shut out Utah by a 31-0 margin. Utah finished the 2024 season with a 5-7 record, while the Huskers finished 7-6 with a win over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl. Las Vegas would certainly not be a bad location to view a bowl game. Husker fans always seem to show out wherever their teams play. Allegiant Stadium is certainly not a bad venue. Nebraska will open the 2025 college football season on Thursday, August 28, when the Huskers face the Cincinnati Bearcats at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
