Newhaven Fort to reopen following £7.5m restoration
A historic fort in East Sussex Is to reopen after a £7.5m restoration project.Newhaven Fort, which has been closed for 12 months, now boasts new interactive exhibitions, an adventure playground and a 1970s-themed escape room.Lindsay Lawrence, general manager at the 19th Century fort, said the restoration not only preserved the fort for future generations, but made it a more "accessible, sustainable and dynamic visitor attraction".The fort will reopen its doors to the public on 15 February, while the escape room will open in April.
Visitors will be able to explore previously hidden parts of the fort, including a newly accessible Battery Observation Post, offering panoramic views of the coastline.The Romney Hut in the fort's parade square has been reclad and insulated, providing an event space for school activities, weddings, community events and corporate hire, while the fort's 18 casemates – vaults within the site – have been revamped to serve as exhibition areas.
'Cherished landmark'
To safeguard the fort's future, preservation works have also been completed, including structural and drainage repairs, brickwork repointing and electrical and ventilation system upgrades.Duncan Kerr, chief executive at Wave Active, which operates Newhaven Fort, said the site offeres something for everyone."Whether it's a fun family day out, an immersive journey through history, a quiet coffee break or simply a chance to take in the stunning coastal views," he said."It stands as one of Sussex's most cherished landmarks. Preserving this unique site has been a privilege, and we look forward to the many benefits its restoration will bring to our community for years to come."Funding for the work was granted to Lewes District Council through capital funding programmes being delivered in Newhaven, including the Town Deal and Levelling Up funds.

THE Eden Project in Morecambe has been pushed back by two years with an even later opening date, The new project costing £100m was expected to open in 2026, but work on the attraction is yet to start. 5 With changes still being made on the design details, Eden Project Morecambe is now expected to open in 2028 - two years later than originally planned. According to the BBC, Local Government Minister Alex Norris confirmed all allocated funding for the project would be in place by early 2026, when building work is likely to get under way. Despite the delay, an updated report has said that "work has been progressing". There will also be a big meeting on June 4 to discuss the Eden Project with Lancaster City Council's budget and performance panel. The Eden Project Morecambe was first given official government approval back in March 2023. It also secured £50million in Levelling Up funding to allow work to commence on the £100million project. The project was originally named Eden Project North, and the hope was that it would have the same success as the Eden Project in Cornwall, which opened in 2001. Plans for the site are very impressive, showing three huge egg-shaped structures looking over the bay. Other images of the potential site reveal walkways linking treehouses, as well as other wooden structures. Once completed, the new Eden Project will be home to a "hyper-real forest" with large installations and immersive theatre. There will also be an exhibition area and meeting point for guests named the Bay Hall. The attraction will also have children's play areas, restaurants, cafes and a gift shop. The Eden Project website states: " Eden Project Morecambe will be a destination that combines indoor and outdoor experiences, connecting people with the internationally-significant natural environment of Morecambe Bay while also enhancing wellbeing. "Eden Project Morecambe will combine exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, world-class horticulture, live music, art, food, beverage and retail spaces, all integrated as essential parts of the overall experience." 5 The site in Morecambe isn't the only one set to open in the UK, there's plans to build another Eden Project in Dundee. The Eden Project Dundee was also expected to open in 2026, but has been pushed back to 2030. The attraction is set to be built along the River Tay and attract as many as 500,000 tourists a year. Another Eden Project set to open is in Londonderry. This one is set to open this year - two years after the original opening date. The Eden Project Foyle in Northern Ireland is costing an estimated £67million and is set to have the biggest undercover play area in Europe. The main attraction will be the Acorn, a "performance area and play space" connected by walkway, with the entire site being the largest undercover play area in Europe. This includes zip wires, rope bridges, slides, floating boardwalks and paths on the roof that both adults and children can walk along. Belfast airport and easyJet apologise after disabled pensioner left waiting on plane
The 75-year-old Bangor man and his wife (72) had already faced a 'three-hour delay' on the easyJet flight to Majorca and were then forced to wait another hour for special assistance to be taken off the return flight back in Belfast. And when they eventually gained access to the Northern Ireland port, immigration officers had left their customs desks leaving the couple stranded for some time to have their passports checked. The pensioner, who wished to remain anonymous, hit out at what he claims is 'chronic under-staffing' of special assistance. He said: 'The problem with Belfast International Airport was on the night. There were five flights in before us and we ended up doing laps of Lough Neagh waiting to land. 'At Belfast they have a Combi-Lift and vehicle, which is a machine that comes along and is raised up to the plane door so that you get off on your wheelchair. I understand that there may have been a lift that was out of action because it is damaged and needed to be repaired. 'On the way out to Majorca we had a three-hour delay and got to our rooms at 6am and I also ended up in hospital there, with pneumonia. So, it was eventful enough even at that point. 'On the return, back to Belfast we ended up having to sit on the plane for the best part of an hour - 50 minutes for sure - before we were able to get off. You can't use the loo, which surprised me and there was no offer of any water. And then when we did get off, of course there was no one at the desk [immigration] and I was told , 'No, you can't get into the country'.' The delays to immigration were resolved soon afterwards. He added: 'I've been getting special assistance for five or six years and it is arranged in advance of my flights. I have osteoporosis and have cracks at the bottom of my spine, so I don't do standing for very long at all or walk any distance. 'As well as that my right ankle became fused years back and I also have atrial-fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat, which leaves me breathless, that's why I have to have the wheelchair. 'The truth of the matter from my point of view would be that, if you go to any other airport in the UK and certainly even in Majorca, they are not understaffed for people who are prepared to push wheelchairs and that type of work. It's really chronic under-staffing for special assistance in my opinion.' News Catch Up - Friday 16 May An easyJet spokesperson said: 'This is clearly not an acceptable experience and absolutely not what we expect for our customers, and we are looking into why this happened with the airport and their special assistance provider. 'Our crew remained onboard with the passenger while waiting for the airport's special assistance to arrive to ensure his well-being and water and toilets onboard were available.' Stormont and the Government's Levelling Up fund has previously provided Belfast International with several million pounds in funding for investment in transport support. Persons of Reduced Mobility using Belfast International Airport are provided with assistance as and when required on their journey through the airport at no extra cost, according to the airport's website. Belfast International recently completed the first phase of its £100m upgrade and expansion redevelopment plans. An airport spokesperson said: 'The safety and comfort of all the passengers that travel through Belfast International Airport is our priority and we are deeply sorry that the service experienced on this occasion was below our usual high standards. 'This was due to a number of aircraft arriving earlier or later than their scheduled arrival time and a number of passengers requiring assistance who had not booked, which conflated the problem. 'The provision of Special Assistance in every UK airport is audited by the Civil Aviation Authority and we work closely with them to ensure we are providing the highest standard of care for the over 110,000 passengers who require Special Assistance at Belfast International Airport every year. 'Belfast International Airport has received a Good rating from the CAA for its Special Assistance provision. We again apologise for the inconvenience caused to the passenger and would be happy to discuss the issue with the passenger directly.'

Ayr town centre set to receive £16 million facelift from Levelling Up funding
South Ayrshire Council has been awarded £16 million by the UK Government as part of their Levelling Up Fund. Ayr town centre is set for a £16 million investment after South Ayrshire Council were awarded Levelling Up funding from the UK Government. Burns Statue Square could now see a range of improvements over the next few years after the funding was secured. Three main streams for developing the town centre square have already been identified including the general regeneration of the area, a shopfront improvement scheme and an active travel route linking the town centre with Prestwick Airport. South Ayrshire Council aim to start construction work in summer 2026 and it is hoped the project could be completed by summer 2028. Detailed proposal are being drawn up and include plans for new public spaces, events areas and information points. Businesses on Burns Statue Square and within the town centre could also benefit from the scheme to help revitalise tired shopfronts. A number of public consultations on the plans are set to take place over the next year once more detailed plans have been announced. Cllr Bob Shields, South Ayrshire Council's portfolio holder for developing South Ayrshire, said: 'We need to make more of this part of Ayr. There has been some progress with the new Astoria Cinema generating footfall and we need to build on this momentum. 'We will be looking at how traffic currently accesses the town, we'll also be promoting active travel and how we can work with partners to develop a transport interchange where trains, buses, and taxis could all operate from one central location.'
