Despite the initial resistance, Amitabh personally spoke to Jaya's father, who agreed to a small wedding that included his parents.
Jaya Bachchan's marriage to Amitabh Bachchan on June 3, 1973, is celebrated as one of Bollywood's iconic unions. But the path to their wedding was marked by family resistance, especially from Jaya's father, who openly opposed the marriage and even told Amitabh's father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, that his family was 'ruined' after the wedding.
Jaya Bachchan's Father's Shocking Reaction
Harivansh Rai Bachchan recounted the moment in his autobiography In the Afternoon of Time, revealing the tension during the wedding day. 'Before we left, I embraced the father of my new daughter-in-law and congratulated him on getting a son-in-law like Amit, expecting him to say the same in respect of Jaya. But he said, 'My family is utterly ruined,'" he wrote.
This stark reaction came despite the couple's deep affection and commitment to each other. Jaya Bachchan later shared more about the hurdles before their marriage on the podcast What The Hell Navya. She revealed that Amitabh's father had strict conditions about their relationship, refusing to allow the couple to go on a trip together before marriage.
Jaya Bachchan And Amitabh Bachchan Marriage
'He called me and said, 'My parents are saying you can't go for a holiday with Jaya. If you want to go for a holiday with her, you marry her.' We were planning to get married in October, but we preponed it to June," Jaya said.
Amitabh Bachchan also valued Jaya's career, encouraging her to keep working but to choose projects carefully. 'I definitely don't want a wife who will be 9-5. Please work. You must work but not every day," Jaya recalled him saying.
Her father's disapproval stemmed from his belief that marriage should not be the end goal for his daughters. 'I have not brought you into this world to just educate yourself, get married and settle down and have children. I want you all to do something in life," Jaya quoted her father saying.
Despite the initial resistance, Amitabh personally spoke to Jaya's father, who agreed to a small wedding that included his parents. Over 52 years later, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's marriage remains a pillar of strength, and they share two children — Shweta and Abhishek Bachchan.

The duo was seen being escorted by their team near the temple premises as the paparazzi followed them. Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor recently paid a spiritual visit to the Tirupati Balaji Temple, and their videos from the pilgrimage are taking social media by storm. The duo, who are currently gearing up for the release of their upcoming film Param Sundari, were spotted offering prayers and seeking blessings ahead of the film's promotions. Taking to their Instagram handle, Maddock Film shared a video of visiting the temple. The duo was seen being escorted by their team near the temple premises as the paparazzi followed them. Both Sidharth and Janhvi were seen in ethics for the occasion. Janhvi Kapoor, like her previous Tirupati visits, wore a half saree and looked stunning in a traditional look. Sidharth, on the other hand, opted for a simple off white kurta for the day. About Param Sundari: Directed by Tushar Jalota, Param Sundari is slated to tug at audiences' hearts on August 29. The film is a cross-cultural romance set against the lush backdrops of Kerala. It follows the love story between a North Indian man and a South Indian woman, played by Sidharth and Janhvi, respectively, and explores how love bridges cultural divides. With a blend of chaos, comedy, emotion, and unexpected twists, the film promises to be a heartwarming entertainer that resonates across regions. Param Sundari's trailer: Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films have released the much-awaited trailer of Param Sundari, a romantic drama starring Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra, directed by Tushar Jalota. Set to release on August 29, the film celebrates love that transcends geography, language, and cultural boundaries. Shot against the beautiful backdrop of Kerala, the trailer captures the intoxicating blend of monsoon-drenched roads, backwater bike rides, and the architectural beauty of centuries-old churches – including a heart-stopping sequence that echoes the timeless romance of our favourite onscreen couple SRK and Kajol. Sidharth And Janhvi talks about their characters: Janhvi Kapoor opened up on the film and said, 'Sundari is deeply personal to me. Her grace, quiet strength, and love for her roots resonate with my own South Indian heritage. Shooting in Kerala, surrounded by such beauty, I felt an emotional connection to her world that I hope the audience will feel too" Sidharth Malhotra says, 'With Param Sundari, I feel like I'm revisiting the kind of romance I grew up loving, but telling it in a way that feels fresh and relatable. Param has that Delhi boy charm, with a love story that makes you cross worlds. We wanted it to look as beautiful as it feels, and Kerala's magic really made that happen. I hope the audience feels the same warmth and joy we felt while making it." First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Denzel Washington on Oscars: Not that interested

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Los Angeles, Aug 14 (PTI) Denzel Washington has won the Academy Award twice but says awards are hardly a motivating factor for him. During the press tour of his new film 'Highest 2 Lowest", Washington told journalist Jake Hamilton, 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff." 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward." Washington explained. Addressing his two Oscar wins and nine Academy Award nominations, he said 'I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good." The actor won his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for 'Glory" in 1990. In 2002, he was honoured with the Best Actor award for 'Training Day", alongside Ethan Hawke, who was nominated. Hawke last year recalled Washington's indifference towards the Oscars in an interview with Chris Wallace. 'You don't want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award's status. That's the way he thinks," Hawke explained. In his prolific career, Washington has starred in a plethora of prestigious and commercially successful titles, including 'Malcolm X", 'Inside Man", 'The Tragedy of Macbeth", 'Fight" and 'Fences". Washington will later be seen in Spike Lee's 'Highest 2 Lowest", a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film 'High and Low".
