Follow the smoke drifting across the road from Suyaar and you'll find the latest addition to SE15's substantial food trail, Lai Rai. A new-school Vietnamese with an adamantly 'no pho' menu, Lai Rai has local roots (it's run by the same family as nearby Bánh Bánh) but is a snackier, share-ier proposition than its big bowl-proffering sibling.
Lai Rai's discreet shopfront is immediately rendered indiscreet thanks to a red-and-white striped awning nabbed from a passing funfair. Inside, Lai Rai continues with its endearing brand of intensity. Lit by red neon and with a clinical stainless steel counter, the rest of the small space is a jumble of high and low tables (there's also an airier, less full-on upstairs level); suggesting the exact point where Saigon canteen culture meets the contents of Charli xcx's Dropbox.
We match the chaotic energy and start with a mango-muddled picante complete with strands of potent red chilli, and so begins a fast and furious assault of flavour. A bowl of slow-braised pork belly pieces, sweet and sticky nugs of crispy, crunchy, and fatty flesh, could be kids' cinema sweets, were they not pig. Lighter, but by no means less addictive, is the papaya jellyfish salad with pellets of juicy pineapple and smooshed tomatoes, all slugged together with peanuts, a windowbox of fresh Vietnamese herbs and yet more chillis. It glows the colour of a particularly lovely sunset and toiters adeptly across the tightrope of sweet/savoury.
Another hefty 'small plate' is piled with fleshy beef tartare, cut with lumps of cucumber and simply begging to be scooped up with shiso leaves. On top are crushed crackers and another brace of peanuts, making this textural symphony perhaps more meat salad than pure tartare, but we're not complaining.
Big plates aren't much different in size from their forebears, though crispy chicken leg, fried twice for extra crunch, is a beast of a thing, bobbing about on green herb dressing. We like it, but we like the mussels in coconut and lemongrass broth more, and are smug to have ordered the bahn mi (basically bits of baguette) instead of a side of rice, and set about soaking bread in the fragrant liquid until it almost disintegrates.
Pudding is more simple, with fish sauce and vanilla caramel icecream a pescetarian take on salted caramel, and kumquat cucumber sorbet more like a frozen mint mojito than anything of its advertised ingredients.
While Peckham might already have a million places to eat, Lai Rai has immediately marked itself out as one to visit very, very soon.

Felixstowe beach carnival to celebrate Nigerian community
A beach carnival will bring together hundreds of people to celebrate their Nigerian Nigerians in Ipswich Community group will host its second annual carnival at Felixstowe beach on Saturday from 10:00 BST to 18: year's event drew 300 attendees, with more expected this Akingbesote set up the community group in November 2023, and said it allowed Nigerians to integrate and come together to celebrate their heritage. "We put it upon ourselves to create a platform where we can integrate ourselves. As a people we can come together as a community with common understanding and create a platform where people can get settled," he added."We've been through the struggle of trying to migrate and, plus, if you get to a new environment and get to know people from where you are, [they] can help you settle you in the community." Nigerians in Ipswich Community has a WhatsApp group with over 890 members where they can seek help and support from others in Ipswich."It's been a blessing," Mr Akingbesote said."We always want to come together, see people, talk to people, speak your language with them."We are here to help everyone settle, we here to contribute positively to the Suffolk county as a host community for Nigerians."We keep raising the bar and we keep representing." Mr Akingbesote said the beach carnival was a family-friendly event and open to everyone."We're going to do a lot of games - tug of war, egg race, sack race, dance competitions, food eating competitions, drink competitions - a lot of stuff that day."For people who like to play chess or play scrabble, we will have table games."We will have couples dance competitions to make it fun, and as well we've got music and our DJ live there."There will also be an after party held from 22:00 BST to 03:00 at Murrayside Community Centre in Nacton Road, Ipswich. Smoke signals: from Charli xcx's nuptials to The Bear, cigarettes are everywhere
Coffee and chocolates traditionally signal the end of a meal at a wedding. But now many couples are ditching the sweet stuff and doling out cigarettes instead. Bowls and trays piled high with fags have become the new party favour. Last weekend, guests at Charli xcx's nuptials were served Vogue Essence Bleue slim cigarettes from silver trays, and social media is peppered with wedding receptions featuring tiered dessert stands laden with smoking paraphernalia and dedicated 'smoking stations'. It can be an expensive addition to any wedding bill, considering the average cost for a packet of 20 cigarettes is now £14. Many modern brides take their inspiration from Mary-Kate Olsen, the child star turned fashion designer for The Row. In 2015, Olsen doled out mini bowls of cigarettes during her wedding to her now ex-husband Olivier Sarkozy. Emma Westblade, the editor-in-chief of the wedding planning directory the Wed, described the trend as 'a soft rebellion against the polished perfection long associated with weddings, in favour of something more unfiltered and deliberately nostalgic'. She added: 'It's controversial, yes, but it's part of a larger return to vice-coded aesthetics, plucked from the noughties and revived by gen Z for today's weddings.' At the online marketplace 1st Dibs, sales of items with cigarette, lighter, tobacco and cigar in the item title are up 11% this year compared with 2024. Trending items include 1930s cigarette dispensers, art deco cases and porcelain Hermès ashtrays from the 1980s. Getting a nicotine fix is also trending at fashion parties. In September, guests at a party in Paris for Kylie Jenner's clothing brand Khy were greeted by waiters holding silver platters of slim cigarettes and branded matches. At an event to celebrate her collaboration with the denim brand Madewell, Alexa Chung served guests ice cold martinis next to bowls of Camel Blues. Last month, the sale of single-use vapes in England was banned. Perhaps traditional cigarettes never really went away, but they now seem to be having a resurgence. In March, research found that smoking rates in parts of England had increased for the first time since 2006. This is despite the fact that smoking is widely known to increase the risk of cancer and 94% of UK adults recognise this. The trend is also reflected in pop culture. Singers Lorde and Addison Rae both mention smoking in their recent singles, and Sabrina Carpenter uses a fork as a cigarette holder in the video for her new song, Manchild. In June, just before France's new smoking ban, Beyoncé lit up a cigarette on stage in Paris during her Cowboy Carter tour. Charli xcx was photographed smoking outside her wedding reception, while Dua Lipa and Paul Mescal are regularly spotted with a fag in hand. On screen, Seema (Sarita Choudhury) smokes everywhere in And Just Like That, including in her bed. Dakota Johnson's character, Lucy, is rarely without a cigarette in her new film The Materialists, and in the latest series of The Bear, even anti-smoker Sydney attempts to light up. Jared Oviatt who runs the Instagram account Cigfluencers described cigarettes as 'kind of like blue jeans. They've survived every trend cycle you can imagine.' Citing generational factors as playing a role in smoking's revival, Oviatt added: 'The dream of stability, owning a home, financial security feels increasingly out of reach. So the question becomes: why not do what you want? Why not smoke? Nothing matters!'
