Nagaland governor La Ganesan, 80, dies at Chennai hospital
Ganesan was undergoing treatment in the ICU unit for the past few days and died on Friday night, a Kohima Raj Bhavan spokesperson said. Ganesan was admitted to hospital after he suffered a fall at his Chennai house on August 8.
Ganesan, who served as Manipur governor from 2021, was shifted to Nagaland Raj Bhavan in February 2023. He had previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh for a brief period.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and deputy CM Yanthungo Patton expressed condolences over Ganesan's death.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, 'Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.'
In his message, Rio said he had come to know La Ganesan as a man of integrity, principle, great wisdom and moral strength. 'His modest nature endeared him to the people and will continue to inspire generations,' he said
'Throughout his journey in public life, he carried himself with dignity, humility, and an unshakeable commitment to the welfare of the people. During his tenure in Nagaland, he worked with dedication to strengthen harmony, encourage development, and support the aspirations of the people,' Patton said.

Chennai: The mortal remains of Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, who passed away on Independence Day, will be cremated in Chennai on Saturday. His body, kept at his residence in T. Nagar for the public to pay homage, will be laid to rest this afternoon with full respect. Ganesan, 80, died at 6.23 p.m. on Friday while undergoing treatment in a Chennai hospital. A veteran leader with a long association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he was known for his accessibility to journalists and his willingness to provide clear on-record statements throughout his career. Born on February 16, 1945, in Thanjavur, Ganesan hailed from an orthodox Brahmin family with deep RSS roots. He lost his father at the age of nine and began his career as a Revenue Settlement Inspector in government service. Deeply committed to the nationalist movement, he resigned after nine years to become an RSS pracharak. During the Emergency in 1975, he played a crucial role as chief organiser of the RSS in Tamil Nadu, leading efforts to restore democracy. He was also active in addressing sensitive issues such as religious conversions in Meenakshipuram, communal unrest in Mandaikkadu, and caste-related tensions in Ramanathapuram and Puliangudi. In 1991, he joined the BJP to strengthen its base in Tamil Nadu. Rising steadily through the ranks, he served as organising secretary, national secretary, all-India vice-president, and state president. He represented Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha and was part of the BJP National Executive. A multifaceted personality, he edited the party's Tamil mouthpiece Ore Naadu and launched Pottramarai, a magazine to recognise Tamil scholars, writers, musicians, and artists. Fluent in multiple languages, he was known for his oratory and his ability to compose patriotic and national-integration-themed lyrics. In August 2021, he was appointed Governor of Manipur, later holding additional charge of West Bengal before being posted to Nagaland in February 2023. Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum. President Droupadi Murmu said Ganesan worked for the welfare of the people, and his contribution to Tamil Nadu and the country would be remembered. GST reforms: CII hails PM Modi's move; calls it a ‘visionary' step for businesses
Representative image The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has hailed the forthcoming reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort. Chandrajit Banerjee, director general of CII, said in a statement, 'On behalf of Indian industry, CII warmly welcomes the Hon'ble Prime Minister's visionary announcement of next-generation GST reforms. This landmark step reflects the Government's deep commitment to building a simpler, more transparent, and growth-oriented tax regime that will empower businesses and benefit consumers alike.' As per news agency ANI, the Prime Minister revealed that a high-powered committee will be set up to review and recommend comprehensive changes to the GST framework. CII called the move 'timely and forward-looking', noting it would help the tax system keep pace with India's fast-changing economy while ensuring stability for investors and entrepreneurs. The industry body welcomed several long-standing suggestions it had championed, including a shift towards a two-rate structure, alongside a separate rate for demerit goods, to simplify the system. CII also backed the correction of inverted duty structures in manufacturing, the reduction of compliance requirements for MSMEs, and the assurance of stable tax rates to boost investor confidence. Banerjee said these measures could significantly improve ease of doing business, cut costs, and speed up economic formalisation and digitisation. The proposed rationalisation of rates, lowering taxes on essential items and adjusting higher rates for luxury and sin goods, was described as a 'balanced approach of equity and efficiency' that would benefit both consumers and government revenue. Since its launch, GST has unified India's market, reduced tax cascading, and created a technology-driven compliance process. According to CII, the reforms mark the beginning of a 'GST 2.0' era, aligned with global standards and supportive of India's $5 trillion economy target. According to ANI, government sources stated that the Centre is considering removing the 12% and 28% GST slabs, retaining only the 5% and 18% rates. Around 99% of items in the 12% category could move to 5%, and nearly 90% of goods in the 28% slab may shift to 18%. CII praised the inclusive approach of the government and pledged to work with the finance ministry, GST Council, and stakeholders for smooth implementation. 'These measures will strengthen India's economic foundations, enhance investor confidence, and position the country among the world's most competitive and resilient economies,' Banerjee concluded. Bangladesh: Devotees throng ISKCON temple in Dhaka to celebrate Janmashtami
Dhaka [Bangladesh], August 16 (ANI): Devotees take darshan of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha at the ISKCON temple in Dhaka, Bangladesg as ISKCON has begun the three-day celebration amidst Krishna celebrations marks one of the most important religious events for the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The temple also hosts a fair, where devotees buy sweets and gifts to mark the on the spiritual essence of the festival, Das Brahmachari said, 'May Lord Krishna bless who are righteous and may He change the mindset of those who are evil and turn them into good people.
