11 bitten by stray dog in Tamil Nadu in single day, Congress MP demands task force
Eleven people were bitten by a stray dog in a single day at Chettipalayam in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district, prompting widespread concern and calls for immediate government intervention. The repeated attacks, all from Ward 1 of the area, have triggered alarm among local of the victims, a man named Ganesan, described how he was bitten in the leg while heading to water his field. 'There are a lot of dogs in our area. I was on my way to water my field when it quietly came behind me and bit me. When I went for treatment, I was shocked to see many under treatment for dog bites,' he said. Ganesan suffered a chunk of flesh missing from his leg and joined a growing number of patients seeking treatment for similar to District Hospital records, a total of 7,991 dog bite cases have been registered up to June this year, all of whom have received anti-rabies vaccination. In July alone, 800 cases have already been reported. Tamil Nadu Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram, who has been consistently raising the issue, brought up the matter during Zero Hour in the Parliament. He demanded a national response to what he termed a public health crisis.'This is an issue which concerns the man on the street. In India, we have over 6.2 crore stray dogs, one of the largest populations globally, and remains endemic for rabies, accounting for 36 per cent of the world's rabies-related deaths. We are spending 150 million dollars on rabies vaccine,' he further added, 'Recently in Chennai, one dog bit 29 people who had to be hospitalised because after testing it was found that the dog had Rabies. The Ministry of Animal Husbandry or the Ministry of Health do not take responsibility for this. The local bodies do not have the funds or expertise to implement Animal Birth Control rules. I'm requesting that the Prime Minister constitute a National task force to fund it and deal with the problem.' Earlier, on March 28, Karti Chidambaram met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his Parliament House office, highlighting the growing health and safety concerns posed by stray dogs in the country. The Congress leader proposed forming a National Task Force to develop a 'holistic, humane, and scientific solution' while working closely with local bodies. He also emphasised the need for dedicated shelter houses and a long-term plan to manage the crisis. - Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

HG-3 downgrade of Singanallur Railway Station causes consternation among travelling public
Downgrade of Singanallur Railway Station by the Railways by bringing it under 'Halt Grade-3' categorisation has come in as a rude shock for the travelling public. Hundreds of office-goers and labourers, who used to undertake to and fro travel from the railway station to Tiruppur and Erode prior to the Covid pandemic lockdown, had been demanding stoppages of passenger trains at the station in recent years, after restoration of normal services and stoppages. The Coimbatore-Nagercoil-Coimbatore (16322/16321) and Palakkad Town-Tiruchi-Palakkad Town (16844/ 16843) trains ceased to stop at these two stations, even after train stoppages were revived in the post-covid phase most of the other stations. The downgrade from HG-2 to HG-3 categorisation this year was apparently been determined based on the revenue and outward passengers handled. According to Railway officials, railway stations that handle less than one lakh passengers a year and generate revenue less than or equal to ₹5 lakh are categorised under HG-3. Till last year, the station was categorised under HG-2 implying handling of more than one lakh passengers and generating revenue of less than or equal to three lakh rupees. According to the travellers, there was no fair play on the part of Railways in curbing the stoppage of the passenger trains and then citing the absence of patronage to downgrade the categorisation. Battling inflation, the working class are required to spend nearly ₹ 150 a day for to-and-fro expenses towards bus travel in the absence of the train facility which would have costed them just one-sixth of the expenditure. According to Ganesan of Vellalore, who has been espousing the cause of the affected train travellers, the Railways has not responded positively to several representations in recent years. The refrain of the Railway authorities is that the stoppages of the passenger trains had to be stopped at these stations after their conversion into express trains. The passengers, on their part, contend that the demand ought to be analysed objectively, reasoning out that the stoppage of the two trains would only result in additional revenue and optimal utilisation of existing infrastructure.
