'BAM will gain from Pearly-Thinaah million-ringgit deal'

KUALA LUMPUR: While women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah are set to earn up to RM1 million each anually under their new contracts, sports analyst Dr Pekan Ramli believes the bigger winner could be the BA of Malaysia (BAM).
Pearly-Thinaah are expected to sign a new deal with BAM this week, bringing an end to months of speculation over their national team future after the previous contracts expired in December.
The contract extension is expected to see them stay with BAM until at least the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Pekan said BAM stands to benefit commercially from retaining the country's top women's pair, currently ranked world No. 3.
"With Pearly-Thinaah staying, BAM secures a valuable commercial asset. Their presence will help attract major sponsors. The deal makes sense for both parties," he said.
Pekan felt that the reported package is a good deal for the players, sparing them the logistical and financial challenges of turning professional.
"If they go independent, they'd need to manage their own coaches, sparring, travel and planning. That requires serious resources. With BAM, all that's taken care of — they just focus on playing."
Pekan pointed out that Pearly-Thinaah will also get to keep their prize money from tournaments.
Meanwhile badminton legend Datuk Rashid Sidek said the million-ringgit figure for Pearly-Thinaah is justifiable given the current market rates.
"They deserve it. If they were professionals, they might even earn more," he said.
However, Rashid cautioned that BAM must ensure that such high salaries do not undermine its broader development goals.
"If too much of the budget goes to just a few players, it limits support for others, especially juniors. BAM isn't like a private sponsor — they need to manage the whole programme," he said.
Rashid said Pearly-Thinaah made the right decision to remain under BAM, as there is stability and support from the Youth and Sports Ministry.

LA28 unveils Olympic competition schedule, marks PlayLA milestone

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is ready to serve as the official venue for the closing ceremony of the 2028 Olympic Games. (EPA Images pic) LOS ANGELES : Organisers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics on Monday released the first look at the Olympic competition schedule, highlighting a historic reshuffling of key events and the most ambitious sports lineup in Games history. The announcement comes as the city marks three years to go until the Opening Ceremony and celebrates a major legacy milestone: more than one million enrolments in the PlayLA youth sports programme. For the first time in nearly three decades, the Summer Olympics will return to the US, with Los Angeles hosting for the third time after 1932 and 1984. The 2028 Games are set to feature 844 ticketed events designed to maximise both domestic and international viewership. Organisers revealed that the Opening Ceremony will take place on July 14, 2028, at 8.00pm ET (5.00pm PT), split between the LA Memorial Coliseum and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The Closing Ceremony is scheduled for July 30 at the Coliseum. In a notable departure from tradition, the LA28 schedule swaps the usual order of athletics and swimming competitions. Track and field events will open the Games in the first week, with swimming moving to the second week, culminating in its finale on the penultimate day at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The first Olympic champion of LA28 will be crowned at Venice Beach in the triathlon event, while the marathon will close out athletics on the final weekend. Day 15 is expected to be the busiest for medal events, with 16 team sport finals and 19 individual sport finals taking place. 'The Olympic competition schedule has been meticulously developed to ensure the world's best athletes can compete in LA,' LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover said in a statement. 'We are energised by today's milestones and remain focused on the work ahead as the Road to 2028 continues.' Organisers said the schedule will continue to be refined, with a more detailed breakdown to be released later this year. 'When the world comes here for these Games, we will highlight every neighbourhood as we host a Games for all and work to ensure it leaves a monumental legacy,' LA mayor Karen Bass said. Meanwhile, Hoover joined city officials on Monday at an event at the Coliseum to celebrate PlayLA surpassing one million programme enrolments. The initiative, backed by up to US$160 million in investment from LA28, the city's recreation and parks department, and the IOC, provides affordable and inclusive sports programming for children aged 3-17 across more than 40 Olympic and adaptive sports.

Settling footballers' unpaid salaries with 'duit kutu'?

KUALA LUMPUR: It's insulting and humiliating. That is how current and former players of Kelantan Darul Naim (KDN) described the attempt by the team management to settle months of salaries owing to them. KDN midfielder Jasmir Mehat voiced his frustration over the club's offer, which includes a 50 per cent cut from the three months of unpaid salary, monthly instalments of RM200 until the debt is settled, and match-based payments of RM500-RM1,000 for only five matches between Feb and April. "We're not asking for anything extra. We want what we've earned, but being told we'll be paid RM200 a month feels like we're not being taken seriously," said Jasmir. "At that rate, some of us would have to wait nearly a decade to be paid in full. It doesn't feel fair or respectful to professionals who gave their commitment to the team." Jasmir added that the players were open to discussions, but the solutions offered so far showed a lack of genuine intention to resolve the matter quickly or reasonably, and equated it to paying with "duit kutu". Meanwhile, former KDN head coach Rezal Zambery Yahya said that nearly 20 former players and staff have rejected the club's proposed terms and given KDN until tomorrow to respond before raising the matter with the FA of Malaysia. "We're not water filter salesmen who can be paid RM200 a month until the debt is cleared," said Rezal. "Paying per match doesn't make sense either because there's no such clause in our contracts. Despite that, we've offered them more practical solutions. It's up to them now to be reasonable."

Westports could make it into FBM KLCI at next review: CIMB Securities

KUALA LUMPUR: Westports Holdings Bhd could replace Sime Darby Bhd in the upcoming review of the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) as its market capitalisation (market cap) ranking has risen to 24th among eligible securities, surpassing the eligibility threshold of the 25th largest. The next FBM KLCI review outcome announcement is scheduled for Dec 4, and will be based on closing share prices on Nov 24. Any changes to index constituents will take effect on Dec 22. CIMB Securities noted that based on closing market data as of July 10, Westports has risen to 24th position in market cap among eligible Main Market securities. 'The company could potentially be added to the KLCI in the next review, provided it retains a ranking of 25th or higher among eligible securities as of Nov 24, the cut-off date. 'Currently, the market cap gap between Westports and Nestlé Malaysia (the 26th-ranked eligible security) stands at 6.3%. If Westports is added, we believe Sime Darby, which currently has the lowest market cap among existing KLCI constituents, could be removed to make room,' it said in a research note today. CIMB Securities noted that in addition to meeting the market cap requirement, securities must have a free float of at least 15% and pass a liquidity screening test to qualify for inclusion in the FBM KLCI. Port operator MMC Port Holdings Bhd has reportedly moved closer to what could be Malaysia's largest initial public offering in 13 years, following the submission of a draft prospectus to the Securities Commission, as published on the regulator's website. According to the FTSE Bursa Malaysia Index Series Ground Rules, a newly listed company may qualify for inclusion in the FBM KLCI if its full market cap is at least 2% of the total market cap of the FBM Emas Index, based on the closing price on its first trading day. 'If this condition is met, the stock will be added to the KLCI at the close of its fifth trading day. As of Jul 10 2025, the FBM Emas Index market cap stands at RM1,626.6 billion, implying that an IPO with a market cap of at least RM32.53 billion would meet the fast-entry threshold,' said CIMB Securities. It added that potential changes in the FBM KLCI could spur increased interest in stocks likely to be included, driven by passive fund inflows, while stocks at risk of exclusion may face selling pressure. The FTSE and Bursa Malaysia are scheduled to release the preliminary results of the FBM KLCI review on Dec 3, via a technical notice, one day ahead of the official announcement on Dec 4. Since the last review, YTL Corporation Bhd, YTL Power International Bhd and Axiata Group Bhd have recorded the largest increases in market cap among FBM KLCI constituents. Conversely, Sime Darby, PPB Group Bhd and RHB Bank Bhd have registered the most significant declines. As of June 30, the financial services sector accounted for the largest weighting in the FBM KLCI at 41.1%, followed by the utilities sector at 17.6% and the telecommunications sector at 9.8%. – Bernama
