Iraq leads Arab electricity growth
Iraq recorded the fastest electricity generation growth in the Arab world in 2024, according to the Washington-based Energy Research Unit.
The jump comes amid Baghdad's ongoing push to boost domestic power production, overhaul its grid, and cut reliance on energy imports as demand rises.
Saudi Arabia led with 454.6 TWh (up 5.6%), followed by Egypt at 237.4 TWh and the UAE at 177.3 TWh (up 5.5%).
Iraq ranked fourth with 169.5 TWh—up 14.9% from 147.1 TWh in 2023—marking the region's highest growth rate, ahead of Algeria (101.1 TWh) and Kuwait (89.5 TWh).
Qatar followed with 58.7 TWh, Oman with 48.5 TWh (second-highest growth at 7.3%), and Morocco with 43.5 TWh.
Globally, electricity generation climbed to 31,250 TWh in 2024, up from 29,960 TWh in 2023, with China accounting for nearly one-third at 10,080 TWh.

UAE-based Gulftainer boosts operations at Iraq's Umm Qasr
Baghdad ( – Gulftainer, a global port operator and logistics company headquartered in the UAE, is expanding its operational capabilities at the Iraq Container Terminal (ICT) in Umm Qasr. The UAE-based firm recently received three Kalmar container reach stackers as part of its continuous efforts to improve terminal efficiency in response to increased cargo loads, according to The Maritime Standard (TMS). Gulftainer affirmed that the upgrade will result in shorter container processing times and better utilization of terminal space through increased stacking capabilities. The new container handling equipment has a rotating cabin, customizable spreaders, hydraulically powered lifting and stacking systems, and energy-efficient engines that minimize fuel consumption. The container handlers are equipped with various safety features, including load-sensing technology, stability control systems, and integrated cameras. The Managing Director for Iraq Operations at Gulftainer, Nic Gray, stated that the company's continuing investment in infrastructure demonstrates its commitment to helping Iraq's growing commerce industry. According to Gray, the new reach stackers will enhance ICT's capacity to deliver efficient and dependable services.

Energy at full speed: Development Road redraws Iraq-Turkiye ties
Shafaq News – Ankara/Baghdad Iraq and Turkiye are set to expand cooperation through the Development Road Project, which has evolved into a platform for a broader energy partnership, according to regional analysts. Spanning 1,200 kilometers and linking the Gulf to Europe via Iraqi and Turkish territory, the project has 'significantly strengthened' bilateral energy ties, Sercan Caliskan, a researcher at the Middle East Research Center (ORSAM) told Anadolu. 'The Development Road has opened the door to future-focused cooperation, steering relations toward a long-term strategic framework,' Caliskan said, noting that the success of this effort depends on sustained, high-level diplomacy. Energy analyst Yesar Al-Maleki of the Middle East Economic Survey (MEES) pointed out that the Iraq–Turkiye Ceyhan pipeline in Kirkuk could be used to transport crude from additional producers, reinforcing Turkiye's position as a regional transit hub. 'It also enables Ankara to integrate oil extracted through hydraulic fracturing in southeastern Turkiye, in cooperation with US companies.' Natural gas collaboration is also gaining momentum, he added. Imports from Turkiye could help Iraq reduce its reliance on frequently disrupted Iranian gas supplies. In the longer term, rising domestic output may allow Baghdad to export gas to Europe. Al-Maleki also noted that Turkiye would benefit from broader gas transit capabilities, channeling supplies from Russia, Azerbaijan, and other sources into Iraq—further cementing its role as a regional energy hub. Meanwhile, talks are already underway to replace the 1973 oil transit agreement, which expires in July 2026. Turkish officials have signaled that a more comprehensive accord is being considered, aligned with the broader objectives of the Development Road framework.

Iraq GCPI launches side-loading oil exports
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Friday, Iraq's General Company of Ports (GCPI) berthed the first oil export tanker at the newly designated side-loading terminal within Iraqi territorial waters in Basra. According to the GCPI Director General Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, the terminal is designated for the export of both refined oil products and crude. The side-transfer operation (STS) was completed successfully, with the tanker loaded with crude oil before departing safely with an internationally recognized STS Clearance certificate. Last month, Al-Fartousi explained that Iraq's side-loading operations were previously managed by the State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) and the Oil Tankers Company, despite the terminal being located within Iraqi territorial waters. GCPI had overseen these operations until November 2020, when jurisdiction shifted. However, a recent appellate court ruling reaffirmed that side-loading operations fall under the legal authority of the General Company of Ports of Iraq, based on Law No. 21 of 1995. In compliance with this decision, GCPI has resumed full administrative and operational control over the site.
