Iraq GCPI launches side-loading oil exports
On Friday, Iraq's General Company of Ports (GCPI) berthed the first oil export tanker at the newly designated side-loading terminal within Iraqi territorial waters in Basra.
According to the GCPI Director General Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, the terminal is designated for the export of both refined oil products and crude.
The side-transfer operation (STS) was completed successfully, with the tanker loaded with crude oil before departing safely with an internationally recognized STS Clearance certificate.
Last month, Al-Fartousi explained that Iraq's side-loading operations were previously managed by the State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) and the Oil Tankers Company, despite the terminal being located within Iraqi territorial waters.
GCPI had overseen these operations until November 2020, when jurisdiction shifted. However, a recent appellate court ruling reaffirmed that side-loading operations fall under the legal authority of the General Company of Ports of Iraq, based on Law No. 21 of 1995. In compliance with this decision, GCPI has resumed full administrative and operational control over the site.

Iraq consumes +59M liters of fuel daily
Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq consumes approximately 31 million liters of gasoline and 28 million liters of diesel each day, according to the EcoIraq economic observatory. Sajad al-Sudani, a member of the observatory, told Shafaq News that Iraq continues to record high levels of fuel consumption. 'Gasoline consumption reaches 217M liters per week,' he said. He added that monthly gasoline consumption stands at about 930M liters, while annual demand exceeds 11.38B liters. Diesel consumption, meanwhile, surpasses 27M liters per day—189M liters weekly—amounting to 810M liters per month and more than 9.85B liters annually. Al-Sudani noted that Iraq's low fuel prices are largely the result of substantial government subsidies. 'Iraq ranks 19th globally and seventh in the Arab world for having some of the cheapest fuel prices,' he said, warning that maintaining this level of subsidy amid such high consumption poses a significant challenge to the national budget.

Iraq launches major Beiji power plant project
Shafaq News – Saladin Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced, on Saturday, allocating the necessary funds to upgrade Iraq's electricity production, transmission, and distribution sectors nationwide. According to Al-Sudani's media office, the PM launched the first phase of construction for the Beiji Gas Power Plant 2 in Saladin province, which will have a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. It includes the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 169 megawatts, for a total of 1,014 megawatts. Additionally, the project will establish a new power evacuation network with seven 400-kilovolt transmission lines connected to the national grid through six main lines, along with a 132-kilovolt network comprising 16 lines dedicated to Saladin. The first two units of the plant are scheduled to come online within 27 months, with each subsequent unit expected to be commissioned every two months thereafter.

Prime Minister Affirms the Continued Efforts to Develop the Energy Sector
Baghdad-INA Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani launched today, Saturday, the construction works for the first phase of the Second Beiji Gas Power Plant in Salah al-Din Province, with a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. The Media Office of the Prime Minister said in a statement, received by the Iraqi news agency-INA,"The Prime Minister commended the efforts made to prepare for the launch of this important project, affirming that the energy sector serves as a foundation for any comprehensive development plan. He explained that the government has allocated the necessary financial resources to develop all sectors of electricity—generation, transmission, and distribution—in order to improve energy production across all regions of the country". The statement further elaborated that,"The project will be implemented by a consortium of Siemens Energy (Germany) and CSCEC (China). The contract includes the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas generation units, each with a capacity of 169 megawatts, for a total capacity of 1,014 megawatts. It also includes the establishment of a load dispatching network consisting of seven circuits at 400 kilovolts, which will feed six lines into the national grid, as well as the construction of a new 132-kilovolt network comprising 16 lines to serve Salah al-Din Province. The first two units are scheduled to be operational within 27 months, followed by the remaining units at a rate of one unit every two months".
