Iraq consumes +59M liters of fuel daily
Iraq consumes approximately 31 million liters of gasoline and 28 million liters of diesel each day, according to the EcoIraq economic observatory.
Sajad al-Sudani, a member of the observatory, told Shafaq News that Iraq continues to record high levels of fuel consumption. 'Gasoline consumption reaches 217M liters per week,' he said.
He added that monthly gasoline consumption stands at about 930M liters, while annual demand exceeds 11.38B liters. Diesel consumption, meanwhile, surpasses 27M liters per day—189M liters weekly—amounting to 810M liters per month and more than 9.85B liters annually.
Al-Sudani noted that Iraq's low fuel prices are largely the result of substantial government subsidies. 'Iraq ranks 19th globally and seventh in the Arab world for having some of the cheapest fuel prices,' he said, warning that maintaining this level of subsidy amid such high consumption poses a significant challenge to the national budget.

BP partnership targets Iraq gas upgrade
Shafaq News – Kirkuk Iraq has signed a development deal with British energy firm BP to modernize North Gas Company (NGC) facilities in Kirkuk, Deputy Prime Minister for Energy and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani announced on Wednesday. Speaking from NGC headquarters, Abdul Ghani framed the project as part of a wider strategy tied to four oil fields recently awarded to BP, stressing that upgraded infrastructure is essential to manage rising production volumes. 'The improvements will stabilize gas supply to power plants, drive industrial growth, and link Iraq's natural resources with international capabilities to strengthen the energy sector,' he clarified. NGC General Manager Ahmed Abdul Majid told Shafaq News the company now produces 380 million standard cubic feet of dry gas daily, alongside 1,100–1,200 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), 750 cubic meters of gasoline, and up to 125 tons of sulfur. Abdul Majid added that while dry gas and LPG serve local demand, gasoline is sold to private firms such as Al-Barham, and sulfur—now stockpiled at over 600,000 tons—is exported through the State Oil Marketing Organization. In turn, energy analyst Hassan Abdul Jabbar explained to Shafaq News that 'the BP partnership includes advanced systems designed to expand NGC's processing capacity and reduce operational waste.' He noted the project supports Iraq's long-term push for energy self-sufficiency by cutting dependence on imported gas and maximizing the country's domestic potential.

Iraq offers new transit air routes to meet airlines' growing demand
Baghdad ( – Due to increased demand from international airlines looking for routes through the country's airspace, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport started to open new air routes, a step that authorities believe might strengthen Iraq's worldwide aviation status. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, Maytham al-Safi, told Iraq's official newspaper, al-Sabah, that the ministry has made considerable effort to establish aviation routes and improve the efficiency of operations to guarantee the safety and easy transit of planes across the country's airspace. The step is part of larger ambitions to increase international collaboration and modernize Iraq's aviation infrastructure, according to al-Safi. The Iraqi official explained that Iraq's Transport Ministry has received additional demands from worldwide carriers to access Iraqi airspace, noting that Iraq is a critical aviation connection between the East and West, as well as a crucial transit spot in the air navigation network, both regionally and internationally. Al-Safi stated that the step aims to improve Iraq's globally recognized airspace rating and fulfill the demands of international airlines. Earlier in July, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport revealed that more than 700 aircraft traveled across Iraqi airspace in a single day, marking the greatest level of aviation traffic ever recorded in Iraq. The achievement is an indicator of the government's national plan for rebuilding international trust in Iraqi airspace and improving operational preparedness to meet the highest standards. Director of Iraq's General Company for Air Navigation Services (GCANS), Abbas al-Baydani, explained that the organization has been able to carry out qualitative initiatives in a very brief period of time to build its infrastructure and improve personnel efficiency, reflecting Iraq's critical and essential position as a strategic air corridor connecting East and West. Several regional and international airlines have reverted to using Iraqi airspace as a key route for their flights due to Iraq's operational stability and precise air traffic control services.
