Iraq offers new transit air routes to meet airlines' growing demand
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, Maytham al-Safi, told Iraq's official newspaper, al-Sabah, that the ministry has made considerable effort to establish aviation routes and improve the efficiency of operations to guarantee the safety and easy transit of planes across the country's airspace.
The step is part of larger ambitions to increase international collaboration and modernize Iraq's aviation infrastructure, according to al-Safi.
The Iraqi official explained that Iraq's Transport Ministry has received additional demands from worldwide carriers to access Iraqi airspace, noting that Iraq is a critical aviation connection between the East and West, as well as a crucial transit spot in the air navigation network, both regionally and internationally.
Al-Safi stated that the step aims to improve Iraq's globally recognized airspace rating and fulfill the demands of international airlines.
Earlier in July, the Iraqi Ministry of Transport revealed that more than 700 aircraft traveled across Iraqi airspace in a single day, marking the greatest level of aviation traffic ever recorded in Iraq.
The achievement is an indicator of the government's national plan for rebuilding international trust in Iraqi airspace and improving operational preparedness to meet the highest standards.
Director of Iraq's General Company for Air Navigation Services (GCANS), Abbas al-Baydani, explained that the organization has been able to carry out qualitative initiatives in a very brief period of time to build its infrastructure and improve personnel efficiency, reflecting Iraq's critical and essential position as a strategic air corridor connecting East and West.
Several regional and international airlines have reverted to using Iraqi airspace as a key route for their flights due to Iraq's operational stability and precise air traffic control services.

Iraq to gain Gulf access via new ferry route with Pakistan
Baghdad ( – Iraq and Pakistan have agreed to launch a ferry service connecting Iraq's Umm Qasr port with Pakistan's Gwadar port, enhancing Iraq's maritime access through the Arabian Gulf. Located in southern Iraq near the Kuwait border, Umm Qasr is the Iraq's largest commercial port and a critical gateway for trade. The new ferry route, which will pass through Gulf waters, is expected to strengthen Iraq's logistics network, reduce transport costs, and support both trade and religious tourism. Umm Qasr port will also strengthen Iraq's connectivity to South Asia and the wider Gulf region. The agreement was finalized during a meeting in Islamabad on August 6, 2025, between Iraq's Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri and Pakistan's Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry. The ferry will be operated by Sea Keepers, the first international company licensed by Pakistan for such services. The route could facilitate Iraqi oil exports and increase imports of key Pakistani goods, including medicines, meat, and rice. The link may also benefit thousands of Pakistani pilgrims who travel to Iraq annually.

Iraq Amends Funding Structure for China Framework Agreement
By John Lee. The Iraqi Cabinet has approved amendments to its earlier decision (No. 229 of 2025) concerning the Iraq-China Framework Agreement. The revisions allow for the reallocation of project funding under the investment account of the agreement, based on proposals prepared by the Diwani Order Committee No. 23995 and in line with the Federal Budget Law. As part of these changes, the financing source for Phase 1 of a 250-megawatt solar power plant, to be developed by the Ministry of Electricity, will be shifted from the credit account to the investment account of the framework agreement. According to a statement from the Office of the Prime Minister, this shift aligns the funding mechanism with the requirements of Iraq's federal budget legislation. (Source: PMO)
