Lewis Hamilton in a ‘difficult place personally' amid Ferrari struggles, says Martin Brundle
After winning six world titles and spending 12 years at Mercedes, Hamilton moved to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 campaign, targeting a historic eighth world championship this year.
However, in a car short of pace compared to frontrunners McLaren, Hamilton is yet to finish in the top-three after 14 grands prix. His best result came when he won the sprint race in China in March.
The 40-year-old endured a torrid weekend in Hungary, qualifying and finishing the race in 12th, labelling his own display 'useless' and encouraging Ferrari to look for another driver.
'I'm not looking forward to writing this next section,' said ex-F1 driver Brundle at the start of his Sky Sports column. 'It's about Lewis Hamilton, who endured what must have been one of the worst weekends of his career, in and out of the car.
'He described himself as 'useless' in post-qualifying interviews and suggested the team should change the driver. That was best left unsaid, but he obviously wanted to openly punish himself.
'He's clearly in a difficult place personally, and during the race he would finish in that same 12th position, never really showing signs of progress.
'He sat in the car in parc ferme post-race for what seemed an age and was very downbeat in interviews again.'
Hamilton acknowledged he is 'looking forward' to the four-week summer break ahead of the next race in the Netherlands on 31 August – and Brundle believes it has come at the perfect time, before speculating how long Hamilton can cope with this level.
'The summer break couldn't be more timely for Lewis to have a reset,' Brundle added.
'It's painful to observe this great champion in so much strife, and we have to expect that he can weather the storm and return to form given his talent and experience.
'Otherwise I simply can't see him enduring two more seasons at Ferrari, or anywhere else, like this.'
Ex-F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has stated that Hamilton, in his 19th consecutive F1 season, should retire from the sport given his current plight.

Alan Sheehan says Swansea plan to build on buzz of Snoop Dogg becoming co-owner
Alan Sheehan has described the 'buzz' since Snoop Dogg became a Swansea co-owner and explained how the Championship club plan to build on the feel-good factor. The 53-year-old American rapper joined a growing list of celebrity investors in British football last month by becoming part of a Swansea ownership group that already included Croatia midfield great Luka Modric. Multi award-winning Snoop said Swansea's 'underdog' story 'really struck a chord with me' and his vast following on social media – 89 million on Instagram and 20.5 million on X – quickly learned about the Welsh club and his love for Joe's ice cream in the city. 'To have Snoop and Luka on board is a massive benefit,' Swansea boss Sheehan said ahead of Saturday's league opener at Middlesbrough. 'There is a buzz, obviously. As a football club you have to become more appealing commercially, to be more competitive, and appeal to the wider nation. 'It's different to how it was maybe when I was a player, but I understand why, and I totally welcome it. 'Rome wasn't built in a day, but there are big plans for the football club. 'It's about building strong foundations and building that character and resilience within the football club.' Comparisons with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are unavoidable and already being made. The two Welsh clubs are Championship rivals this season after Wrexham became the first team in the top five tiers of English football to win three successive promotions. A docu-series tracking life at Swansea, on similar lines to the award-winning FX show 'Welcome to Wrexham', is understood to be already in the pipeline. Asked if Swansea – who were relegated in 2018 after seven seasons in the Premier League – were the 'new' Wrexham, Sheehan said: 'No, we're Swansea. We're not new anything. 'Now they're in our division, I suppose, it becomes more there now (rivalry), but we don't play them until December. So I won't really be speaking about them until December.' Modric – who joined the board in April following a takeover led by American businessmen Brett Cravatt and Jason Cohen six months earlier – was unveiled as an AC Milan player on Monday after his trophy-littered 13-year spell at Real Madrid ended this summer. The 39-year-old has played his part in Sheehan's summer recruitment strategy, actively persuading players to join the Welsh club. 'Obviously, his transfer situation… he was unavailable to come here,' smiled Sheehan. 'We've had a few text messages and he's involved. 'Luka has spoke to some players, passed on his knowledge, what he knows about the football club, and the plans that we have for it. 'Snoop and Luka are very invested in the club. They care, they speak through the ownership and the ownership are very good to us.' So will Grammy-nominated Snoop soon be swapping California for Swansea to watch a game? 'I believe so,' said Sheehan. 'But I'm not sure which game yet. It would be very naive and narrow-minded to think two very successful people in what they do could not help us. 'Successful people have a lot in common – a work ethic, a grit, a determination to get where they want to get to. So with Snoop, Luka and the ownership there is a lot of positivity around the football club.'

Stunning one-off Bugatti Brouillard revealed with a horse's head inside the gear selector
Just when you thought Bugatti's W16-era was done and dusted, the ultra-high-end brand has squeezed out one more for one of its most discerning customers. Called the Bugatti Brouillard, this is a new one-off creation from the brand's new Solitare program, which will now offer one-of-one commissions to its most ardent collectors. Advertisement - Article continues below The Brouillard is based on the open-top Mistral, itself a one-of-99 special edition celebrating the end of the W16 era. This means the Brouillard shares all the same fundamental underpinnings, but in place of the open cockpit is a closed cabin with a unique part-clear roof and central spine. In fact all of its external panels are unique to the Brouillard, and together they give the car a more muscular look. This is particularly the case with the rear haunches and its more pronounced wheelarches, plus the far more aggressive undercut on the door panel. At the rear, Bugatti has fitted a fixed 'ducktail' spoiler in place of the Mistral's active wing, but the manufacturer says that it doesn't negatively affect the car's aero balance. Yet among these unique elements, fundamental Bugatti design signatures can still be found. Things such as the horseshoe grille – complete with a milled-aluminium surround – vast engine intakes and its X-shaped rear lights all fit in with the family look. The cabin has also been treated to a variety of additions, including the use of green tartan sourced from a Parisian fine-fabric supplier and green-tinted carbon fibre. Being a closed-roof car, the interior has also been refitted with the Chiron's iconic C-shaped lighting. Look closely at the details and you'll see lots of equine references, too, going so far as to design a hollow gear selector with a tiny silver horse's head mounted inside. This is all in reference to the car's name, because Brouillard was also the name of the founding Bugatti member's beloved pet horse. Under the new skin, the 1,586bhp quad-turbocharged W16 engine still sends its prodigious power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Given the comparatively common Mistral is already knocking on the door of £6m, we suspect this one-off commission would have a somewhat larger price tag attached – not surprising when you consider the owner already has more than a few Bugattis, old and new, in their collection.
