IPL 2025: GT's Sai Sudharsan, Prasidh Krishna clinch Orange and Purple Caps
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 4 (ANI): Gujarat Titans (GT) batter Sai Sudharsan and pacer Prasidh Krishna emerged as the top performers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season as the winners of the Orange Cap for most runs and the Purple Cap for most wickets, respectively.
While Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally ended their 18-year-long title drought with a thrilling six-run win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final, Sudharsan and Krishna stood out as the season's individual stars.
Sudharsan ended as the top run-getter, with 759 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.21, with a strike rate of 156.17, a century and six fifties. His best score was 108*. His side's journey came to an end with a loss to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator.
He is followed by MI's Suryakumar Yadav (717 runs in 16 matches with five fifties at an average of 65.18), Virat Kohli of RCB (657 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.75 with eight fifties), GT skipper Shubman Gill (650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50.00 with six fifties) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) opener Mitchell Marsh (627 runs in 13 matches at an average of 48.23, with a century and six fifties).
Krishna took home the Purple Cap, with 25 scalps in 15 matches at an average of 19.52, best figures of 4/41.
He is followed by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) Noor Ahmad (24 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 17.00, best figures of 4/18), RCB's Josh Hazlewood (22 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 17.54, with best figures of 4/33), MI's pacer Trent Boult (22 wickets in 16 matches at an average of 23.50, with best figures of 4/26) and PBKS' pace spearhead Arshdeep Singh (21 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 24.66, with best score of 3/16).
Coming to the match, PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first. Arshdeep Singh (3/40) and Kyle Jamieson (3/48) applied timely breaks with the ball, while Yuzi Chahal (1/37) also prevented batters from attacking. While Virat (43 in 35 balls, with three fours) tried to keep the innings together, skipper Rajat Patidar (26 in 16 balls, with a four and two sixes), Jitesh Sharma (24 in 10 balls, with two fours and two sixes) and Liam Livingstone (25 in 15 balls, with two fours) upped the attack enough to help RCB post 190/9 in 20 overs.
In the run-chase, PBKS started well with Priyansh Arya (24 in 19 balls, with four boundaries) and Prabhsimran (26 in 22 balls, with two sixes) stitching a 43-run stand. Josh Inglis (39 in 23 balls, with a four and four sixes) and Shashank Singh (61* in 30 balls, three wins and six sixes) tried their level best to keep up with the rising run rate, but Krunal Panddya (2/17), Yash Dayal (1/18) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38) put a fine show with the ball to restrict PBKS to 184/7, despite a sensational 22 runs smashed by Shashank in the final over while needing 29.
The title wait continues for PBKS, who reached their second final and their first in 11 years. (ANI)

Unplanned, unapproved, unforgivable: Lessons and questions from Bengaluru stampede tragedy that took 11 young lives
The fatal events unfolded within less than 24 hours of RCB's title win. Without any clear coordination between the RCB management, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and the state government, an open-top bus parade was publicly announced by RCB early on June 4. The rally was set to start from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Stadium — right through Bengaluru's busiest Central Business District. Also Read - Ramachandra Guha slams Karnataka government: 'Top cop made a scapegoat in Bengaluru tragedy' But here lies the first big question, 'Was the Bengaluru Police informed?". RCB's announcement of the 'Victory Parade' appeared to have caught city police off guard. Just two hours later, police issued a public statement saying the parade was cancelled due to security concerns and lack of clearance. Yet, the damage was already done. Thousands of fans had already begun making their way to the stadium, assuming the event would proceed. To add to the confusion, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar welcomed the RCB team at the airport and took them to Vidhana Soudha, further fueling assumptions that celebrations were still on. Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, present with her husband Virat Kohli, even posted videos of the massive crowd chasing the team bus, calling the experience 'unbelievable.' Clearly, there was no clarity on whether this was a cancelled event or an impromptu, unsanctioned celebration. Also Read - Karnataka CM's political secretary K Govindaraj sacked amid Bengaluru stampede outrage Multiple reports suggest that the Bengaluru Police had raised red flags about the parade, but there was internal pressure to go ahead regardless. The result? Mismanaged crowds, no clear access routes, and a deadly stampede triggered by sheer chaos outside a stadium that already struggles to handle traffic on a match day. Chinnaswamy Stadium has hosted similar crowds before. But what made this different was the false promise and the idea that fans could just show up and catch a glimpse of their heroes celebrating up close — without a plan. These are not just questions for a press conference. These are questions that decide whether such a tragedy will ever happen again. No victory — no matter how historic — is worth human lives. And no photograph or selfie with a trophy can be more important than public safety. What the Bengaluru stampede teaches us is stark, when institutional arrogance and coordination failures meet fan frenzy, disaster is inevitable. Whether it's Bengaluru, Prayagraj, Goa, or Tirupati — stampedes are not acts of God. They are products of neglect, poor planning, and sometimes, sheer ego. And until those in power — sports franchises, civic leaders, and governments — take responsibility instead of hiding behind 'suspensions' and 'probes', such tragedies will repeat. As fans, it's important to remember: celebration is not worth dying for. And as a society, we must ensure that no city becomes a stage for yet another avoidable tragedy.

Karnataka Cricket Body Sought Permission To Hold RCB's IPL Celebration, New Letter Reveals Details: Report
The Karnataka State Cricket Association had sought permission for RCB's IPL trophy celebrations at Vidhan Soudha, a letter sent by it to the state government has revealed, reaffirming KSCA's assertion that it facilitated approvals for the franchise which is under fire following 11 deaths in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. After an FIR was lodged against them, KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, secretary A Shankar and treasurer E S Jayaram submitted in the Karnataka High Court that the gate management and crowd management were not the responsibility of the association. A letter from the KSCA to the state government on June 3, which has been accessed by PTI, reveals that the cricket unit sought permission for festivities at the Vidhan Soudha by DNA Entertainment Networks. The KSCA stated that the concerned company would "make necessary arrangements" for the event. "On behalf of the M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, KSCA requests to inform that after the TATA IPL 2025 Finals on 3rd June 2025, in case Royal Challengers Bengaluru wins the IPL 2025 title, M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall make plans for the felicitation ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," KSCA stated in the letter. "KSCA requests that M/s DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited shall be permitted to make necessary arrangements at the Vidhana Soudha Grand Steps," the association further wrote in the letter addressed to the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (DPAR) of the state government. While the felicitation at the Vidhan Soudha passed off without any major glitch, chaos erupted outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium where lakhs converged following RCB's social media invitation, which was eventually deleted. A planned victory parade had to be cancelled but the function inside the stadium proceeded despite the tragedy that unfolded outside. Apart from the 11 deaths, 56 people were also injured in the incident. The KSCA has pleaded in the state HC that there is "absolutely no wrong that can be attributed to the Petitioner Committee or its office bearers as they stand aloof of any liabilities against the entire unfortunate incident." "IPL events are conducted by RCB through their service provider M/S DNA network private limited and the role of KSCA is very limited as it accommodates by extending the venue and infrastructure," the body stated in its writ petition. "KCSA facilitates government permissions. The management of gates is the responsibility of RCB Franchise /DNA who execute under the direction of the police. "The police have registered the FIR under intense pressure and compelling circumstances without any preliminary enquiry by naming the petitioner/members of KSCA as accused," it added. After an urgent hearing held at the HC, Justice SR Krishna Kumar, who heard the petition seeking to quash the FIR against the KSCA office-bearers, restrained the police from taking any coercive action against the officials until the next hearing. The court also directed the petitioners to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The petition to quash the FIR will be taken up again on June 16. The High Court has also taken suo motu cognisance of the tragic incident and has asked the state to file a status report. It will be heard on June 10.
