Birmingham man killed while allegedly trying to elude police officer
PLEASANT GROVE, Ala. (WIAT) — A 67-year-old Birmingham man was killed in crash that happened while he was allegedly trying to elude a Pleasant Grove police officer Monday.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Ronald Morton was fatally injured when the Nissan Altima he was operating hit head-on with a Toyota Highlander. The crash happened around 12:20 p.m. on Ensley Pleasant Grove Road.
Alabaster police officer Rishan Wright dies following brief illness
Morton, who was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene. The driver of the Highlander was transported to UAB Hospital for medical treatment.
Troopers with the ALEA Highway Patrol Division are investigating the crash.

Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith accuses district attorney of lying about severity of charges against him
WALKER COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The embattled sheriff of Walker County is countering prosecutors' claims on the penalty of the crimes he is charged with, alleging they were purposefully misstated to sway the upcoming election next year. On Monday, Sheriff Nick Smith was indicted on charges related to hiring six men as deputies who weren't certified by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. Likewise, Chief Deputy Ralph Williams was charged with lying to the APOSTC about firing a deputy who was still on the force. Specifically, Smith is charged with six counts of violating article of standards for employing law enforcement officers. According to the Code of Alabama, the charge is a misdemeanor subject to fines of no more than $1,000. During a press conference announcing the charges against Smith, however, District Attorney Bill Adair claimed the charges could result in up to three months in jail and a $500 fine on each charge. 'That it is the belief of Sheriff Smith that the District Attorney has purposely misstated/overstated the penalty for the charges against the Sheriff for the express purpose of negatively influencing potential voters in the upcoming election,' wrote Thomas Carmichael, Smith's attorney. Following the indictment, which he called 'lawfare' and a 'political arrest,' Smith accused Adair of going after him to help J.C. Poe, chief of the Jasper Police Department who is running against him in an election to be held November 3, 2026. Responding to Smith's accusations, Adair said the sheriff was living in an 'alternate reality.' Warren man pleads not guilty to charges in crash that injured woman
WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Warren man was arraigned on charges stemming from a December crash that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital with injuries. Dennis Currey Jr., 23, is charged with OVI and aggravated vehicular assault. According to a report from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Currey was driving a 2009 Nissan Altima that crashed into the back end of a 2010 Honda Civic, driven by an 18-year-old woman from Southington. The report states that both vehicles were traveling northbound on state Route 11 in Liberty Township on Dec. 26 when the crash occurred. The force of the crash pushed the Civic into the median, and the driver was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with what was reported as suspected serious injuries. The Highway Patrol's report states that Currey's blood-alcohol content was .161, double the legal driving limit of .08. A Trumbull County grand jury returned an indictment in the case last month. Currey pleaded not guilty to the charges in Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas on Wednesday, and bond was set at $5,000. Currey is scheduled to appear in court again on July 30. 18-year-old charged in deadly Woodbridge collision after going twice the speed limit, police say
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. () — A teenager is facing a charge of involuntary manslaughter after a deadly collision that happened in Woodbridge last month, police announced Wednesday. The Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) said 18-year-old Wania Mussarat Shaikh was driving more than double the speed limit during the May 27 collision. The crash happened at around 11 a.m. in the intersection of Minnieville Road and Summit School Road — which was also an active work zone at the time. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Woman dies in two-vehicle collision in Woodbridge, police say Shaikh reportedly drove her 2021 Toyota Highlander into the intersection against a red light before she struck a 2020 Honda, police said. The Honda's driver, 45-year-old Seema Rizvi, was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died.
