Star Wars Day - the original cast members then and now

Daily Mirror04-05-2025

It's been almost 38 years since the first Star Wars movie was released and the ever-expanding franchise is still firmly a fan favourite. In honour of Star Wars Day, take a look at the original cast of the award-winning films compared to the present day
Nearly 40 years after the Star Wars film was released, it remains a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. And this weekend, fans will be glued to their screens to see the new installment in the ever-expanding franchise when the animated series Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld drops on Disney Plus - on Star Wars Day no less - 'May the Fourth be with you...'
Whilst viewers love the modern additions to the franchise, including the live-action series Andor, they hold a special place in their hearts for the original stars of the movies, who famously united with newer cast members in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The seventh film in the franchise and part of the main 'Skywalker Saga' storyline, it saw some of the big stars reprise their career-defining roles, including Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Peter Mayhew. They joined the likes of British actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Gwendoline Christie on the red carpet for the movie's premiere, in a golden moment for fans.

In honour of Star Wars Day, the Mirror has decided to compare photos of the original stars at the 1980 premiere of The Empire Strikes Back, to their appearance at the 2015 screenings and more recent public sightings. Let's take a look...
Mark Hamill
Mark Hamill, who played young Jedi Luke Skywalker in the first few films and reprised the role for the 2015 installment, looked dapper in his suit and bow tie as he posed at the first premiere in New York with his wife Marilou York, who he married just two years before.
These days, Hamill can still rock a tuxedo and is pictured below at this year's BAFTAs proving he can still kill a black tie look.
Carrie Fisher
Meanwhile, a stunning Carrie Fisher could be seen chatting with Princess Margaret inside the Dorchester Hotel at London's 1980 opening.

The then-24-year-old wowed in a slinky gown as she pinned half her hair back – she'd moved on from the infamous hairdo in the first film, Star Wars: A New Hope.
The iconic actress returned as a general in the new 2015 installment. With the change in title came a shift in Leia's costume, with the actress admitting that even the signature buns don't feature throughout the whole movie.

Carrie passed away the following year in December 2016 aged 60, after suffering from cardiac arrest, with a toxicology report finding that she had opiates in her system at the time. She did, however, still star in the next two installments of the recent trilogy, appearing in The Last Jedi - which she had finished filming before her tragic death, and was touchingly dedicated to her memory.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker also featured the iconic star, with the filmmakers using unseen footage shot during the seventh film, and getting her daughter Billie Lourd to step in to film a flashback scene, before digitally altering her face to replace it with Carrie's. "Billie was playing her mother," the Visual Effects Supervisor of the film told Yahoo. 'It was a poignant thing, and something that nobody took lightly — that she was willing to stand in for her mom."

Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford was 35 when he first played the role of Han Solo and he looked just as chuffed at 73-years-old to be returning to the iconic character of Han Solo..
When celebrating The Force Awakens, Ford was joined by his wife Calista Flockhart, who he married in 2010, during the Force Awakens premiere.

The silver fox was dressed in a black suit with a pale blue shirt beneath – a much more casual look than he opted for in 1980.
Looking equally happy with the glitzy event was his then-51-year-old wife, who stunned in an elegant black gown with silver detailing along the neckline.

She beamed as she stopped for the paps with her hubby and wore a pop of bright red lipstick to add to her glam look, with her hair in gentle waves resting on her shoulders.
It was great to see the pair smiling again after their horrific ordeal earlier the same year when Ford nearly died in a plane crash in March 2015.
Firm Friends
One thing we couldn't help but notice at the premieres for the original Star Wars Movies was how incredibly smart they all looked back then with their tuxes and bow ties - and just how well they appeared to get along.

The cast looked like firm friends during the photo call for the franchise's second installment, The Empire Strikes Back back in 1980.
The lead three – Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill – are joined by David Prowse (Darth Vader), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2-D2) in one shot.

And as they posed outside the Dorchester Hotel for the London premiere, the gang arranged themselves in height order – from Peter Mayhew's massive 2.21-metre frame all the way to Kenny Baker's 1.12 metre height.
Both Mayhew and Baker have reprised their roles for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
While Prowse's character was killed off in the 1983 movie Return of the Jedi, the Dark Side has a new recruit in the form of Adam Driver's Kylo Ren.

Legendary dating show set to return after 22 years - with Holly Willoughby, Davina McCall or Claudia Winkleman in the running to host

Blind Date is set to make a sensational return to TV after 22 years away from screens. The legendary dating show - famously hosted by the late Cilla Black from 1985 to 2003 - is eyeing up Claudia Winkleman, Holly Willoughby or Davina McCall to host the revival. Originally, rumours suggested the ITV hit would make a comeback on BBC but now sources claim the love-match show will reboot on Disney+. An insider told The Sun: 'Although there's likely to be some modern twists, the bosses very much want to keep the essence of the original. 'There'll be key elements returning, including the famous sliding wall. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The legendary dating show - famously hosted by the late Cilla Black from 1985 to 2003 - hopes to get Davina (pictured) in the mix 'Plus there will be a prize up for grabs of a wedding package, which echoes Cilla's famous gag whenever couples had enjoyed a successful date, and she used to ask, "Do I need to buy an 'at for the wedding?"' MailOnline has contacted Disney+ for comment. In March, former This Morning host Holly was tipped to become the next Cilla, with the presenter lining up a string of big-money deals worth up to £10million. The revival was previously being considered by Holly's husband Dan Baldwin, and the star had previously stepped into Cilla's shoes when she hosted a reboot of Surprise Surprise. An insider told The Sun at the time: 'There might not sound like obvious parallels between Holly and Cilla, but they're both two of the biggest stars of modern telly. 'Emulating Cilla isn't just about taking on her shows, it's as much about carving out a niche as a solo presenter with serious clout in the world of telly. 'But together with her husband Dan, they form the ultimate power couple in TV. She has the public appeal that gets viewers tuning in, while he has a track record of making hugely successful TV shows.' When asked about other shows he'd love to reboot, Dan suggested Blind Date, saying: 'Another one you'd like to see back, Blind Date, are we ready for that? What a Saturday night that was. I'm thinking Blind Date with Claudia Winkleman on BBC1.' A cheaper location was also being sought, as well as plans for fewer expensive celebrities after the likes of Spice Girl Mel B and tennis player Boris Becker were among the 12 stars in the first series Cilla was also married to a big figure in the TV industry, with her husband Robert 'Bobby' Willis, taking over as her manager after Brian Epstein's death in 1967, and negotiating her deal with LWT, that made her one of TV's highest-paid stars. During Blind Date's final year, Cilla was said to be earning £17,000 a week, or £884,000 a year, which is the equivalent of £2million in today's money. Holly had also praised Cilla for being a huge trailblazer for TV presenters in the 1980s and 1990s. The legendary star died in 2015 aged 72. And it appears Holly now has the time for another hosting stint after her Netflix series Celebrity Bear Hunt was axed after one season. The programme, which was set in Costa Rica and was hosted by Holly alongside Bear Grylls, will not return despite the star saying that he was hopeful it would. Sources close to the show which aired in February told the Mail that while the ratings did well it was expensive to make and Netflix are now planning to do more live events rather than pre-recorded shows. One told MailOnline: 'Everyone was very proud of the show but when it came to it, it was just so expensive to make. You had to have a whole set in Costa Rica, loads of staff and loads of celebrities. The overheads were eyewatering.' It is understood that cheaper locations were looked at but nothing was appeared to be suitable.

Lorraine Kelly opens up on ITV shake-up with 'defiant' four-word response

Lorraine Kelly has spoken in her first interview since ITV announced major cuts to her show Lorraine Kelly has seemingly sent a bold message to ITV chiefs about her determination to keep her show on the air, declaring "I'm not done yet". Following last month's announcement of ITV daytime schedule cuts, Lorraine's programme is set to be reduced to 30 weeks per year, and cut down from an hour to just 30 minutes. ‌ However, in her first interview since the news broke, she shared her passion for the show and reflected on her four-decade tenure at ITV. ‌ Acknowledging her status as a "national treasure" and a familiar face to viewers, Lorraine commented: "Well, that's nice, but it's only because I've been around for so long. I've been doing telly for over 40 years. It's mad isn't it? It's absolutely crazy. I started in breakfast telly in 1984, and I'm still getting away with it. Extraordinarily." In conversation with Tom Kerridge on the Proper Tasty podcast, she continued: "40 years in TV last year was incredible. I got a BAFTA. 'Here's a BAFTA for being alive.' I thought, 'Hang on a minute, I'm not done yet,'" reports the Mirror. "I think now I can be a lot cheekier. Because I've always been a bit naughty. Not so much in the morning, but if I do a wee show on Channel 4, or The Last Leg, or something like that. You can be unleashed. And I quite like that. You do have to have a self-edit button, and I'm finding mine is not operating as much as it should. "So, when I'm sitting there and I look at something and I think, 'Gosh, what an absolute k**b that person is,' or how silly they are, I say it and I don't realise I've said it. So I have to watch." Reflecting on the early days of her career, Lorraine shared: "I remember being so scared about doing a piece to camera and just being unbelievably nervous. And that doesn't go away for a long time. It doesn't ever completely go away I don't think. I don't think it should." ‌ On the podcast, Lorraine also touched upon her recent surgery which led to her absence from television. She returned to screens in mid-May following her laparoscopy, a procedure involving small incisions for internal operations in the abdomen or pelvis. "I'm good. I had a wee procedure. Everything is absolutely fine. They whipped out my ovaries and fallopian tubes, and everything is fine. It's all good. It was keyhole surgery, which was amazing. I've just got three wee tiny holes," she explained. ‌ "I mean, I've got more holes than that, but I've got three wee tiny holes where the operation happened. So, it's fine. It's all good." It is understood that shortly after her recovery from the operation, Lorraine was summoned to a meeting with ITV boss Kevin Lygo. He arranged for Lorraine to be told of her show's huge changes separately in a show down in the days before. She is said to have turned down an idea to merge her show with Good Morning Britain. Just days later, the rest of ITV daytime staff were told that 220 production staff out of 440 would be made redundant as part of the cutbacks. ‌ Lorraine has been a fixture on ITV screens since the launch of her show in September 2010, and has been a regular presence on the channel for 40 years, having previously worked on GMTV and Good Morning Britain. According to reports last week, Lorraine is fighting to secure the long-term future of her show. A source revealed: "Lorraine was not happy about what is happening and also had concern for the production team which works on her show and will be cut back too. ‌ "But the truth is she has to roll her sleeves up and work harder on her own show than she has in recent years, otherwise the long term future does not look good. She has been an icon of ITV TV but serious cuts need to be made and her show has been cut to just 30 minutes, which after ad breaks will be a very short chunk of time. "She needs to show bosses it is worth keeping on air. You can expect her to be pulling hard to get big name celebrities on her show instead of GMB or This Morning to prove her worth. She was left in no doubt after the meeting there are some tough times ahead." Lorraine has a unique bond with her show, likening guest interviews to having people over at her own home. ‌ In discussing her approach, Lorraine previously remarked: "I always say I treat people with huge respect and all of that. I'm inviting them into my house, in a sense." Yet when it comes to interviewing politicians, Lorraine takes on a different stance. ‌ She recounted: "I always remember Piers Morgan said I was an iron fist in a velvet glove, and I loved that description. He's very cheeky and very naughty, and he makes me laugh a lot. But I like that, and it's very true. "When it comes to politicians it is completely different. You know what really annoys me. When I first started out you'd get the Secretary of Education and the Shadow Secretary of Education sitting down, and you could have a debate with them. Now, they won't do that. Nobody does that anymore. They actually refuse. And I think it's outrageous. "Because the whole thing about them is ... I do like to give them a chance to talk, politicians, because people are not daft, and they can make their own minds up about them. I don't like the gladiatorial style, because that doesn't get you anywhere at all." ‌ Her tactic with political figures is subtle yet effective: "Give them enough rope and let them talk, and then you can go in with the wee killer question. At the end of the day, they are accountable to us. But more importantly, to our viewers. You've got to make sure you ask what matters to people and their lives." After holding politicians to account, Lorraine finds solace in the soothing sounds of the Shipping Forecast on BBC Radio 4 before bedtime. Despite confessing she has "no clue" about its content, it's her nightly ritual. She said: "Do you ever listen to the shipping forecast? I do. I have no idea what she's going on about. Not a clue. But it's very reassuring. I feel reassured. I feel I can go to sleep at night, and I don't even know what it's about." Amidst the turbulent news of cuts to staff and her own screen time, hopefully the Shipping Forecast continues to provide comfort. Lorraine has dropped anchor at ITV and doesn't want to leave.

Romeo Beckham 'splits from' Kim Turnbull after months of relationship rumours

Romeo Beckham has reportedly split from Kim Turnbull after seven months of dating, with the couple's relationship previously being blamed for the alleged Beckham family feud Romeo Beckham has reportedly parted ways with his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, following months of speculation about a rift within the Beckham family allegedly caused by their relationship. The couple, who have been together for seven months, are said to have called it quits three weeks after David Beckham's 50th birthday celebrations, which were marked by rumours of a family feud due to the apparent absence of Brooklyn Beckham and his wife Nicola Peltz. ‌ According to the Daily Mail, insiders maintain that Romeo and Kim's split is "amicable" and unrelated to any alleged family discord. ‌ An insider told the publication: "Romeo and Kim are both young and they had a lovely time together but at that age things don't always last forever and they decided to split up." They added that the pair have remained on good terms and have been seen at the same venues since their break up, reports the Mirror. The source expressed regret over the split, noting that Romeo's parents "really adored" Kim and believed she made their son "happy". The source revealed that the break up occurred a "couple of weeks ago" and that the former couple have "remained friendly between them". The insider elaborated: " David and Victoria would hate for the view to be that they split because of Nicola and Brooklyn because that simply isn't the case. The fact is that Kim has got a really busy career as a DJ and Romeo has a busy work life too, there is lots of travelling for both of them at having a relationship at this time isn't all that conducive to their lives." Speculation about a family feud escalated earlier this month with whispers that Romeo's brother Brooklyn had a past romantic association with Kim. TMZ reported earlier this year that the past encounter was considered "all water under the bridge" then. Nonetheless, sources told the publication that the contention stemmed from the eldest sibling Brooklyn and his wife Nicola pondering whether Kim had "the right intentions" when dating Romeo. However, rumours have previously swirled claiming that in a now-removed post, Cruz Beckham stated: "Brooklyn and Kim never dated." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
