Fraud probe: New Orleans mayor indicted on multiple charges; accused of hiding romantic relationship with her bodyguard
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell (AP image) A federal grand jury on Friday indicted New Orleans mayor LaToya Cantrell on charges of conspiracy, fraud and obstruction, stemming from allegations that she tried to hide a romantic relationship with her bodyguard. The indictment marks the conclusion of a multi-year federal investigation into Cantrell, the city's first female mayor in its 300-year history. Her bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, has pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and making false statements. Prosecutors allege that Vappie hid the relationship with Cantrell while submitting false payroll records claiming he was on duty. Vappie, who retired from the police department last year, is scheduled to stand trial in January. Federal authorities say Cantrell and Vappie exchanged encrypted messages through an app to avoid detection and deleted the conversations afterward. Both have maintained that their relationship was strictly professional. Acting US Attorney Michael Simpson described the case as a 'three-year fraud scheme that we allege exploited their public authority and positions.' He said Cantrell arranged for Vappie to attend 14 trips, claiming these were occasions when they were 'truly alone.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The indictment states that in 2021, Cantrell and Vappie 'developed a personal and intimate relationship' and allegedly used their public positions to hide it and create opportunities to spend time together. Simpson added that Cantrell falsely claimed in a 2021 affidavit that her phone automatically deleted messages, when the function was only activated in December 2022 after media scrutiny. Following photos taken by a private citizen showing Cantrell and Vappie dining together and drinking wine, Cantrell reportedly filed a police report and sought a restraining order. Cantrell will leave the office in January. Her second term has been marked by clashes with City Council members and a failed recall effort in 2022. 'This is a sad day for the people of New Orleans,' said Monet Brignac, a spokesperson for City Council President JP Morrell. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cantrell family as they navigate through this difficult time.' Cantrell has not posted on her X account since July 15, when she reported that there have been historic declines in crime in the city. Political observers note that her public profile has diminished in recent months due to disputes with the city council and restrictions on her executive powers approved by voters. Cantrell and her supporters argue that she has been unfairly targeted as a Black woman and held to a different standard than male officials. Earlier this year, she described some of the treatment she received as 'very disrespectful, insulting, in some cases kind of unimaginable.'

BJP wraps Dharmasthala case in faith narrative, Congress battles perception war
Bengaluru: What began as an investigation into allegations of mass burials at Dharmasthala — one of the country's most prominent Hindu pilgrimage centres — has evolved into a politically charged contest over faith, identity, and control of the narrative. The special investigation team (SIT), tasked with examining claims that hundreds of bodies were secretly buried, has so far produced limited physical evidence. Yet in the political arena, the case is being reframed as an attack on Hinduism, with BJP signalling it could be a major campaign plank in the run-up to the 2028 assembly polls — a prospect which troubles governing Congress. The investigation was launched in July after a whistleblower — a former sanitation worker employed at the temple from 1995 to 2014 — alleged he had buried hundreds of bodies, including women allegedly .raped before being killed. He also claimed he faced threats to his life and family if he spoke out. Opposition leader in the assembly R Ashoka called it an anti-Hindu conspiracy to defame the temple by both "urban naxals and international hands", while incorrectly claiming the whistleblower is a Muslim. He is a Dalit. BJP also views the matter as a potential rallying issue, with Vishwa Hindu Parishad hinting at a statewide campaign, describing the investigation as part of a drive by "divisive forces". On Sunday, a team of BJP functionaries is expected to visit Dharmasthala as devotees in a show of support. Congress, wary of being labelled anti-Hindu, has reined in its criticism and has been insisting that they ordered the probe with good intentions and not to defame the temple. "Should such claims be allowed to linger?" home minister G Parameshwara asked. "Shouldn't the truth behind these allegations emerge? We formed the SIT to find the truth, so that those facing allegations are treated fairly." He also said the govt is contemplating action against those who carried out a misinformation campaign – including the sanitation worker – against the pilgrim town and its authorities, if investigation fails to substantiate the allegations. But deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar struck a different note, echoing BJP's position: "It is a big conspiracy to tarnish the pilgrim town." Analysts say this divergence underscores Congress's concern over the BJP's Hindutva framing. Political analyst MN Patil said: "Instead of debating whether crimes took place, the conversation has veered toward whether Hindu temples are being unfairly targeted. This narrative mobilises BJP's core vote-bank." Dharmasthala's hereditary head, Veerendra Heggade, has been Dharmadhikari since 1968 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by BJP in 2022 — a fact seen as adding a political layer to the controversy. Legal expert N Venkatesh warned: "When you cast a criminal allegation as an attack on religion, the legal process becomes subordinate to political mobilisation." Does Vladimir Putin speak English? Languages the Russian President knows as he meets Trump in Alaska
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have landed in Alaska for high-stakes talks on the Ukraine war. The two leaders shook hands on the tarmac, exchanged pleasantries, and posed for photographs before heading to the venue of the historic summit in Anchorage. Russia's President Vladimir Putin speaks as he meets with President Donald Trump Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.(AP) As images of their meeting circulated online, many on social media began to ask a familiar question: Does Vladimir Putin speak English? According to the Daily Express, Putin is fluent in English and has a strong grasp of the language, but he rarely speaks it in public or during official engagements. Instead, he typically uses a translator for interviews and political discussions with world leaders. Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, explained, 'In free discourse, at the sidelines of summits, he often speaks in English by himself. But during negotiations and when he is conducting an official meeting, of course he communicates through a translator. However, he practically understands English completely and sometimes even corrects the translators,' according to the outlet. The outlet adds that Putin likely prefers using a translator because he feels more comfortable speaking in his native language. What languages does Putin speak? In addition to his native Russian, Putin is fluent in German, a language he learned during his time as a KGB officer stationed in East Germany in the 1980s. He has used German in diplomatic conversations, notably with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
