BJP wraps Dharmasthala case in faith narrative, Congress battles perception war
The special investigation team (SIT), tasked with examining claims that hundreds of bodies were secretly buried, has so far produced limited physical evidence. Yet in the political arena, the case is being reframed as an attack on Hinduism, with BJP signalling it could be a major campaign plank in the run-up to the 2028 assembly polls — a prospect which troubles governing Congress.
The investigation was launched in July after a whistleblower — a former sanitation worker employed at the temple from 1995 to 2014 — alleged he had buried hundreds of bodies, including women allegedly .raped before being killed.
He also claimed he faced threats to his life and family if he spoke out.

Opposition BJP and affiliated Hindutva organisations have cast the investigation as a conspiracy to malign Hindu temples. Opposition leader in the assembly R Ashoka called it an anti-Hindu conspiracy to defame the temple by both "urban naxals and international hands", while incorrectly claiming the whistleblower is a Muslim. He is a Dalit.
BJP also views the matter as a potential rallying issue, with Vishwa Hindu Parishad hinting at a statewide campaign, describing the investigation as part of a drive by "divisive forces".
On Sunday, a team of BJP functionaries is expected to visit Dharmasthala as devotees in a show of support.
Congress, wary of being labelled anti-Hindu, has reined in its criticism and has been insisting that they ordered the probe with good intentions and not to defame the temple.
"Should such claims be allowed to linger?" home minister G Parameshwara asked. "Shouldn't the truth behind these allegations emerge? We formed the SIT to find the truth, so that those facing allegations are treated fairly."
He also said the govt is contemplating action against those who carried out a misinformation campaign – including the sanitation worker – against the pilgrim town and its authorities, if investigation fails to substantiate the allegations.
But deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar struck a different note, echoing BJP's position: "It is a big conspiracy to tarnish the pilgrim town." Analysts say this divergence underscores Congress's concern over the BJP's Hindutva framing.
Political analyst MN Patil said: "Instead of debating whether crimes took place, the conversation has veered toward whether Hindu temples are being unfairly targeted. This narrative mobilises BJP's core vote-bank."
Dharmasthala's hereditary head, Veerendra Heggade, has been Dharmadhikari since 1968 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by BJP in 2022 — a fact seen as adding a political layer to the controversy.
Legal expert N Venkatesh warned: "When you cast a criminal allegation as an attack on religion, the legal process becomes subordinate to political mobilisation."

PM Modi to inaugurate 3 Kolkata Metro routes on August 22, CM Mamata Banerjee gets invitation
Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has invited West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to the August 22 event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate three new routes of Kolkata Metro. The invitation notably includes a detailed estimate of ongoing railway projects in the state and and financial approvals. While the simultaneous launch of metro services on the Green Line, Orange Line, and Yellow Line is expected to significantly enhance urban connectivity in Kolkata, the invitation to Banerjee has drawn considerable attention, sparking anticipation about her potential attendance at the event. The new routes include the final section of the East-West Metro (Green Line) from Sealdah to Esplanade, which will complete its vital link. The Orange Line will extend services from Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing) to Beleghata, adding four new stations. Concurrently, the Yellow Line will connect Noapara to Jai Hind (Biman Bandar/airport), introducing four new stations and establishing a direct metro link to the airport. Additionally, PM Modi will inaugurate a subway at the Howrah metro station. Vaishnaw, in his invitation, reaffirmed the Centre's dedication to improving train services and infrastructure in West Bengal. He highlighted that projects valued at Rs 83,765 crore were underway in the state, with a record allocation of Rs 13,955 crore in the current budget. Furthermore, 101 stations are being redeveloped, and West Bengal's rail network is already benefiting from nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains, he noted. '2026 election is knocking on the door' However, the invitation led to contrasting reactions. TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty criticised the Centre, stating, 'So many metro projects are stuck for lack of budgetary allocations due to the stepmotherly attitude of the central government. There are local trains that never run on time. At least, this time they have invited the CM, because the 2026 election is knocking on the door.' BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar attributed project delays to land-related issues. 'In Bengal, due to land issues, nearly 43 projects are stuck. The project the PM is coming to inaugurate was stuck near Chingrighata for days. Because of non-cooperation by the police and the traffic department, the metro rail is unable to connect it to Sector 5. The invitation to CM is but natural because the BJP doesn't believe in the politics of hatred. It believes in a federal structure, which the TMC lacks. Hence, it is natural for them to react that way.' In preparation for the launch, Sumeet Singhal, Commissioner of Railway Safety, recently conducted a thorough inspection of the Yellow Line stretch from Dum Dum Cantonment to Jai Hind Bimanbandar. The inspection, covering tracks, trains, and emergency features, concluded with him expressing satisfaction with the section's readiness for passenger service. Upon receiving formal sanction, this new service is expected to significantly transform Kolkata's urban transport landscape. This visit marks another significant engagement for Modi in West Bengal, following his July visit to Durgapur, where he inaugurated projects worth over Rs 5,000 crore. All eyes are now on the August 22 event to see if the chief minister attends it.

Who is C P Radhakrishnan, BJP pick as NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate?
Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan, picked as the NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate on Sunday, made his mark in Tamil Nadu BJP as a results-driven, straightforward, and 'clean' leader. An RSS member from the young age of 16 — at an event in 2023, he described himself as 'a proud RSS cadre' — he won two Lok Sabha elections from Coimbatore as a BJP candidate, in 1998 and 1999, the first time with the highest victory margin in the state in polls held soon after the bomb blasts in the town allegedly meant to target L K Advani. Radhakrishnan served as a BJP National Executive member and Tamil Nadu president from 2004 to 2007 and in recent years has served as the governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Radhakrishnan's Raj Bhavan tenure in Ranchi was eventful, though he commented once that governors should remain free from politics. Soon after taking over, he raised eyebrows for undertaking a tour of the state, while insisting that he wanted to act as a bridge between the state and the Centre. He often asserted that his main focus was to improve the lives of tribals and underprivileged communities in Jharkhand, and in a rather political message, told The Indian Express in an interview, that tribals should be kept out of a Uniform Civil Code. When there was a growing shadow of Central agencies over Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Radhakrishnan's role came under focus. Asked about why the Election Commission opinion on Soren regarding the issue of mining lease to him continued to remain sealed, Radhakrishnan said persons who are found guilty will have to face consequences. He had also hinted at 'difficulties' in revealing the same, without specifying. When DMK leader and Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin spoke about 'annihilation of Sanatan Dharma', Radhakrishnan waded in, referring to him as 'a child' from Tamil Nadu, and said those who try to destroy Sanatan Dharma would perish by their own act. In July 2024, Radhakrishnan was appointed the governor of Maharashtra.
